Runat's MP3 player: finds use for kids and old SD cards
By now, many of you have been around long enough to have spread some seed while cycling through a couple of SD capacity/format jumps. As a result, you now have both children and unused data cards lying around somewhere. Assuming you can find either, why not reunite the two with the help of these "high-speed USB 1.1" MP3 players from Japan. Available in Minnie-pink or Stitch-blue to simultaneously baptize your children in the ways of The Mouse while offering subtle hints on gender roles. Not bad for ¥3,129 (about $27).

What? I’m sorry, but is this comment supposed to make sense? If this article was about a cell phone, camera, or GPS system, and they stuck am MP3 player on it for no-good-reason – then I could see your point. But this "run at - Disney" thing, is a dedicated MP3 player -- that's all it does! Bare-basics, with nothing tacked-on, what do you want for $20 bucks?
I’m glad you and your little friend make jokes about manufacturing add-ons, because most of it’s true. But they would put all those extras in if people didn’t want it or wouldn’t buy it.

It first reminded me of the new iPod Shuffle, a little fatter and um... more colorful. But if I was a kid, I would definitely want a screen and thinner one. Then again, it is like the cube mp3 player, except that one can play video and stuff, and deserves to be a little more thick because of that. I think this would be great a couple years ago, but it isn't.

Judging by the design, I'd say they're intended for kids a little younger than the ones you have in mind.

Do we really want our young kids listening to music all day?

I bought one of those off e-bay about three months ago. It was not as colorful as this it was just plain white, I think there was an article on here about it a while back. It cost me $20 + S/H. I just got it to play around with and it actually is kinda neat. It has a rechargeable battery and it last about 8hrs. I was even able to use my 4gb memory card in it although that size card isn't too practical seeing as it doesn't have a display and navigating a couple thousand songs is hard it does still work. I've settled on a 1gb card and I actually like it probably more than my shuffle but not more than my 8gb nano. I even bought my dad one later on and he loves it since it's real easy to use.

Actually it looks a lot like the Sun Connection SC-MP001W, which still hasn't been released in the US yet. By the way, anyone know if it will be anytime soon?

You can get one off e-bay that's the one I was talking about in my post.

A bit pricey, no? Woot regularly has cheaper deals, and there should be a few on ebay, too. And yes, USB2.0 in most cases.
Ryan @ Dec 1st 2006 3:21PM
actually, if it uses SD card, no big deal. most laptops and even desktops have an sd card slot these days...easy to load faster than usb 1.1...

Looks just like an all white one I bought on ebay from Australia for $9 + shipping. All white. Huh....wonder what "look" they were going for there??? Wish I'd waited so I could've gotten a "Stitch" version....of course, that's probably why the price is higher.
