Toshiba announces 100GB 1.8-inch HDD: Apple winks, nudge nudge
Who uses 1.8-inch drives? Why Apple's 5.5G iPod (among other notables) of course. So if you're thinking about the next big thing, remember this, Tosh just announced their 100GB, 1.8-inch hard disk drive due for mass production starting January. The new drives use perpendicular storage technology like their other drives and feature a 4,200rpm spin, 15ms seek, 100MBps max transfer rate and improved error correction code. Plenty of room for toting HD video eh, Steve?

I'LL GET YOU YET EH, STEVE!!
LMFAO
'Ultra-thin' 12" MacBook Pro, anyone?

What I want to know is why aren't companies just using these HDDs for other devices? And yes, I have a feeling we'll be seeing this in the "true" video iPod.
How hard is it to replace a stock iPod hard disk with one of these? Does it just involve taking it apart, taking the other one out, and then putting this one in; or is there a different connection for iPod hard disks?
Yea, video editing with a 4200 rpm HDD... that'll be lots of fun!
So how long do I need to wait to have a set of these available for my MacBook in a RAID 5 config?
Why would you want a hard disk as slow as this in a computer that's mainly for video/photo editing?
Here we go with the true video iPod again...
Maybe this will make it into the iTV product.
ultra thin mac book? IPHONE?
I think maybe a 100GB Zune in January would be perfect... make it so Bill!
sounds like a good fit for the true video iPod but I thought battery life for a larger display was also a limiting factor for this device.
The 80gb drive was out for at least a year before apple used it in their ipod, what makes you think they would use the 100gb drive any sooner?
Where is there anything said about EDITING video? Clearly an ultra-thin 12" is not what any self respecting editor would use, even for field work. Apple already has laptops for that, they're called Macbook Pros and they're excellent for Final Cut on the move. More logical uses would be for the impending videopod.
Reading is good.
agreed.
is this a single platter drive? if so, that's awesome!
This is the iPod I've been waiting for. Finally, I can fit my 90GB of music on one iPod.
Fishes,
narco.
Nice! For those of us already using a 1.8 hdd in our laptop's, this is really good news. But whatever happened to those nice looking combi "solidstate memory/conventional rotating"-hdd's that were supposed to work so well with Vista?
IPOD.....man I like Apple. I even live and work next door to their headquarters. But it gets you stuck inside an ecosystem where videos must have IPOD formats and music is less transferrable without a million dollar accessory purchase. Apple is genius for doing this but it makes me less inclined to purchase their products (and I have not, to this date, done so). As for a 100GB harddrive...I'm excited for an Apple PDA/phone/computer/smallest-form-factor-in-history/DSC/video hybrid camera/ MP3player/flashdrive/portablehardrive/bluetooth/wifi/IR/RF/enabled/music-video-download-sevice/remotecontrol/garagedooroperner/whateverelse
that would be sweet.
Man ... I could use one of those in my PSP.
@ narco
LoL, 90GB of music? If you have that much music, then I would think your music collection is growing really fast, and in that case it may be worth waiting for a 200GB drive :P
When they say 100GB they mean 100,000,000,000 bytes, and that is only about 93GB..
Sweet!!! I'll be able to finally rip my CD collection into WAV. instead of compressing them. Sigh* If only the ipod can play FLAC.*Sigh
Hi
Can some one tell me if this can be fixed in a IBM X40 laptop.
Thanks.

Please note that 1.8 drives are horribly slow for a primary drive in Laptops. I have one in my Toshiba Dynabook and the hard drive goes like crazy, the operating system (XP) locks up while the cpu is only at 15%. This happeneds with simple things like emptying the recycle bin or opening firefox.
This is the reason that Lenovo/IBM Thinkpads no longer use the 1.8 drive in their ultraportables. You're comprimising serious performance with these.
Perfect for portable media player though!
I Really hope they increase the hard drive to 100 or 120GB and add the iPhone like features (widescreen and horizontal position availability), why would anyone go for a 16GB "iPhoneless" touch iPod? You wouldn't get much on it and would be a downgrade bitgtime, let's say from any ipod at 20GB or up, in which case I have an 80GB Video....any thoughts?
Thanks
