Note: We've had an extraordinary amount of requests for information about donating to a James Kim memorial fund for his wife and two children. Please rest assured that you will be among the first to know when an official Kim-family sanctioned fund has been established. Thanks to everyone who's poured out their heart over this tragic, terrible loss.
There are times when an opinion should be kept to yourself. Some may agree with you, but that's not a reason to express yourself inappropriatly. My two cents.
He had GPS. Moral of the story? Plan your route out using a real map, know your way, and stop traveling if road conditions get too bad.

Sadly James has died.. It's great to see all the comments are rated highest. I shed a few tears for him, God I never knew I'd be in so much pain over this. Fuck this world!!

I am very sorry to hear this. Losing a father is difficult, I know because it happened to me a couple of weeks ago. During this event, I have been hopeful that it would end positively. My thoughts are with the Kims as they figure out how to continue on with out a wonder father like James.

I just don't understand why he didn't stay with his family. That was not a smart move to separate from them. Poor James!
Kevin H, I just wanted to say that until you are in that same situation ( and may you never be) Don't judge any bodies actions. Sad news no matter who are the people concerned. He did what his heart felt was best and that was to save his family.

I think it's important not to forget that Kati and the girls were saved and that is a blessing even if it is tinged with the bitterness of his loss.

He perhaps saved his wife and children by being so resourceful, and died trying to get help for them. Courageous. so sad that he cant be around for his baby's first christmas.

This news is so sad. What a brave Man, Husband and Father. He left the car to save his family. What a sacrafice he made trying to save those he loved. His daughters will grow up knowing that their father loved them enough to give his life. My deepest prayers to all who loved this Man!
I guess his review of the Microsoft Zune was his last posting on CNET...I just watched it a few moments ago....I emailed him once and his reply was swift and gracious....a class act...
I can understand why he left his family, it had been seven days. He said he would be back in five hours if he didn't find help, which means he could only walk 2.5 hours away before he'd have to turn back. In that short a time he either got lost or suffered from hypothermia. So sad.
It's a sad day for us all. When we lose someone we respect, a piece of us goes missing. Since all of us are lovers of technology, I'll never understand why he didn't have a GPS that could have safely guided his way home.
People die every day, every second, around the world. However, this valiant effort by young James Kim to save his family is especially touching. I never knew the man or never read any of his pieces, yet I feel for him and his family. It shows how we're all so connected in this world.

You people posting negative comments, in an obvious attempt to get a rise out of people, are truly the scum of the earth.
For those saying he should have stayed with his family, he did, for over a week. Until you have a wife and two daughters literally going to all die soon out of starvation, then you have NO place to talk about what he should have done. For the man to go out alone, to what he probably knew was almost certain death, in hopes of saving them, is something you'll never understand until it happens to you.

I don't get how this happened. I am assuming they were just driving home and had an accident. I would have assumed he would just go get on the road and someone will eventually drive by.
It is a sad story and I guess when my mom always said to pack extra blankets and some dried foods, matches, and flashlights in the trunk wasn't such a bad idea.
