We'll go ahead and spare you the blatantly obvious "
apples to oranges" remark, as the two fruitful companies actually
do seem to have something in common based on a recent report from French newspaper
Le Figaro. While we've seen a
plethora of wireless broadband providers
hook up with laptop manufacturers, Orange is apparently getting set to offer 1Mbps DSL service for (an apparently attractive) €60 ($79) per month, or "around €2 ($2.65) per day," and you even get a shiny new Apple
MacBook to use with it starting in
January. Additionally, those looking to make the most of their high-speed missions can upgrade to an 8Mbps connection for an additional €5 ($6.62) per day. While contractual terms aren't crystal clear just yet, it looks like some sort of "three-year agreement" would be in order, and
Orange hopes the deal will lure enough folks in to move "1,000 units per month" for the first six months, which would certainly help its consumer base grow right alongside the competitive pressures it's feeling from the Iliad Group. Plus, if you're one of the first 200 to sign up, Orange will throw in a new iPod shuffle for an additional single euro. Purportedly, the whole deal will only be available to Frenchmen (and women) at first, but could spread to other parts of
Europe if it catches on.

Wow! that sounds cool hope it does come to the rest of europe... soon
what a rotten deal.
I pay around 30€ flat a month here in Spain for 8MBit DSL (unlimited) and all national calls...
i wrote a big long comment about how this was a really bad deal, but something happened and it deisapeared (i hate computers!)
here's the crux.
orange in the UK offer 8Mb broadband for £19.99 per month, or if you have an orange mobile phone, £5 per month.
with macbooks starting at £750 (apple store price) who in their right mind is going to pay £140 per month for 1 year of 8Mb broadband and a macbook, let alone for 3 years?!
That's a LOT of money! I pay £23/m for 6MBits/s - this is double that for a significantly slower speed.
The Macbook is available from £750. 750/23 = ~33 months, which is less than 3 years (only just, I suppose).
So I guess it's a poor hire purchase deal.
such a crappy offer (Orange style)... considering :
- it costs between 25 and 30€ a month in France to get (theoretically: that means never) 24 mbits, VOIP, IPTV and so on ...
- seems there isn't any buy option on the computer ...
First, i'm french.
This offer is not really good.
It is in facts 25€ for DSL and 35€ for macbook.
Considering this, after 3 years, the macbook cost 161€ more than the same one on apple.fr
The only advantage is applecare include (which cost a lot).
However you must stay with orange for 3 years !
With full ADSL2+, unlimited calls to modern countries, hdtv, etc... at 30€ for their competitor, orange loose a lot of customers.
And i'm not talking about future services,
iliad/free will install optical fiber in Paris (100Mbps up/down + multime hdtv...).
Ok it will take 2 year but you must think about it when you sign for 3 years (especially if your building get optical fiber on first in a month :) )

Just to clear the offer between Orange and Mac ; for 8 MBS it's not €5 per day more, but €5 per month. I'm living in France and this is the price !!
I think this offer is a very good opportunity with simplicity of the MacBook and the best connection with Orange !
