D-Link's DSL-510 MediaLounge streams HD... over Ethernet (yawn)

D-Link just busted out another MediaLounge wireless media player: the DSM-510. This 1080i, HD streamer (over fixed 10/100 Ethernet, only) sports 802.11b/g WiFi for less demanding media (music, pictures, etc), and streams via Microsoft's Windows Media Connect or any UPnP media servers. The device supports a decent set of codecs: video support includes MPEG-1/2/4, WMV9, XVID with MP3 or PCM, AVI (MPEG-4 layer only) and DVR-MS; MP3, WAV Audio, WMA and AIFF (PCM only) and Ogg Vorbis audio; JPEG and JPEG2000, TIFF 9 (RGB only), non-compressed BMP, PNG and GIF images. Oh, and this model receives a Viiv certification as well. Like the DSM-520 we saw in March, the 510 features HDMI and composite outs as well as optical digital audio for 5.1-channel sound. Fine, we know D-Link is doing the best they can given the sorry state of high-speed, in-home, wireless (and wired) technologies. But damn, what everyone really wants is hi-def streaming gear based on ratified 802.11n, HD over UWB, or Wireless HDMI. Product, please?

Given the broad format support, it is strange the Divx is missing from the list.
Divx is Mpeg4.
It support Dvix file, though not RM/RMVB
I, too, have been looking for a way to wirelessly stream my torrents from the PC to my LCD HDMI TV (which sits 40 feet away) for a while now. I don't want a media PC or any other fan-noise-making crap. Just a cheap gizmo that connects to an HDMI port and streams. I haven't been able to find a reliable solution so far (reviews of the D-Link DSM520 are horrendous).
Oh, my needs are so ahead of my time.
I have heard great things about the DSM-520. If not that unit, which media center should one look for???
If it matters, I do have a LAN connection near my TV.
The Xvid codec will decode DivX as well.
My modded xbox streams all this, plays dvd's, AND plays Halo 2 online.
"it's not 1080i" so what? Compressed 1080i isn't any better than a compressed 1080i torrent fed to the display in 480p.
Why do all these devices need Media Center, or some other windows software installed to stream video? Why can't they just connect to a SMB share point and grab the media off there? That's what I really want. My modded xbox will do this, mostly. It won't do WMV9 or any HD content for that matter. Plus there's no way to turn it on remotely. What's the use of ripping all your DVDs only to have to get up anyway to turn it on. Once there's a CE device that will do this (that doesn't cost $1000), I'm in.
odd. my xbox will detect and properly play an hd divx file on my network share.
btw, I think that's my only complaint and the BIGGEST fault with the xbox in any respect. No power up/down via remote.
I agree a modded Xbox is the best media player around but it's inability to play 1080i or even some 720 files is getting to be a bummer now that I have a Hi-Def Monitor. Ohh and this thing clearly supports XVID and DIVX all the d-link things have.
DSM-510 support 1080i, it has HDMI port.
If you want something like that and more look at the MVIX MX-760HD. You can add a hard drive, has usb host ports to add more on the external side. Has DVI and component. Plus it's wireless (802.11b/g/pre-n) and wired. It all can be found for around $300. Stop waiting it's here.
Can someone tell me what HD content they have just sitting around on their HD's w/out using something like MCE? I'm really curious what HD people are streaming to boxes like these once you take out the live or recorded TV factor. Thanks...
we cleary need XBMC on a 360.
Weird, I already stream whatever I want from my room PC to the DVR PC that I have set up in the living room, which is connected to our HDTV. It works with EVERY format. Granted, you need another PC with a wireless card, but a PC capable of handling those limited demands comes really cheap these days.
D-Link already makes a wireless version. The DSM-520 is the same as the DSM-510, but for $100 more adds wireless and looks like something you'd put in your living room, not your closet or wherever you hide your router. I'm not sure what else you get for double the price though...
I bought one of those last weekend and will be returning it on Friday. The resolution is impressive but it won't access my NAS unit. It requires Intel Viiv or Nero to serve media out. I noticed also that it puts the burden of decode on the PC serving to the unit. My PC was pushing way more data out than the file size.

I use the Mediagate (MG350HD) to do what you are after - except i dont think it does HDMI (I use component and optical audio). It does need Windows Media Centre and plays all my DivX files fine.
Sorry, I meant the MG350HD does not need Windows Media Centre.

Does anyone know whether the DSM-510 can show pictures in higher resolution than 480 lines? That was the big drewback with the 520/320 and made me not want to buy it.
I have had nothing but trouble setting this wireless thing up. Is there any help out there. Their tech support really sucks cause of the language barriers. They don't understand me and I don't understand them. They are too quick to give up and tell me to return the item. The wire conntection works great, but I bought this cause of the wireless part of it all. Please email me if you can help kendee@hotmail.com
