PlayStation 3 charity auction -- 4 days left!
- Real bids only people, this is for charity!
- Five day auction, no reserve. Where else are you gonna snag a PS3 on Christmas eve?
- Payment will go directly to Save Darfur, and will be expected to be made within two days of the auction's close.
- Since most shippers are closed on Christmas eve and Christmas day, we cannot guarantee overnight shipment to you for Christmas day. But you'll have secured the PS3, and we'll overnight it to you immediately thereafter. Hell, we'll even pay shipping.
P.S. -To those who bid but don't win -- don't let that stop you from donating to the charity of your choice this holiday season.

If only i had any money!
But those of you who are looking to spend this much money on a PS3 and not win could also think that at least you would get some write offs from your karma list!

There is one bad thing to this, ps3s are now inflated and are not that hard to obtain
+ not many people want them

"This unit is not 100% deductible -- it is only deductible less the $400 cost of the unit."

Er... 20 GB PS3 = $500, right?

Charity means "love of God"...giving this overpowered, mediocre, overpriced mind mush machine demonstrates no such thing..........................................................................................................................so um...give it to me
Ahmed @ Dec 21st 2006 2:53AM
If you were selling a Wii you'd probably make more money for the charity, check eBay.

Why can't organizations donate to good causes in their own country. It seems today that money just gets dumped into Africa, and in all honesty it is not really doing anything to help the situation. It will take more than a few bucks to save the quagmire of the African continent. It just bugs me how money gets funneled into Africa to do what, ease disconent? That money needs to be dumped into ACTUAL life saving things like cancer and aids research. Nice try Engadget, but I think you guys could find more neutral organizations to donate to.

Completely untrue. Do research and take a look at the various organizations helping in Africa. Many schools are being build in areas where children never thought they would or could attend school.
People with AIDS in Africa (which has the most AIDS infected population) are getting medicine to help fight the virus.
These are just two things that are saving lives in Africa.
Darfur is the worlds worste humanitarian crisis right now. Over 400,000 have been killed and millions more displaced because of the on-going violence. Thousands of children walk miles and miles every night to sleep safe. They fear they will be killed.
So learn the facts and education yourself on the issue before you judge or say that alot of lives aren't being saved.

I was at a local store yesterday and they had two PS3's just sitting out and were trying to sell them but nobody was buying them, i called up several of my friends to see if they or anyone at their work wanted them and didnt get any takers, however several of them asked if they had Wii's available.
PDubNYC @ Dec 21st 2006 11:16AM
wow, some of you are dicks. Always have to rip apart even the most genuine of good deeds, and figure out how you know more, and how this cause or that cause is really not the way to handle something. Or even, in this case, talking shit about the item to be auctioned. Ya sure the Wii is hot as hell right now, but there are a lot of people out there who still want a PS3, and perhaps wouldn't mind combining it with a chance to do a little good in the world.
So go back to making witty comments on digg with your Cheetos-orange fingers clicking away on the keyboard in your parents basement, and simply don't bid, but keep your negative bullshit to yourself.

You're right about deducting the value of the product from the auction/purchase of a charitable donation. Next time you could try this:
Have everyone make a donation, and put "engadget" in the comment section of their donation. (Assuming they're doing it online.) Have the charity give you a list of the engadget-related donations. Give the prize to whoever donates the most. Send the prize(s) to whoever donated the most. You could even do a 1st-2nd-3rd prize.
This way, the donation is not "in exchange for" a donation so the winner shouldn't have to deduct a portion of their donation.
Plus, I bet the charity would get lots more money. Instead of 1 person giving $1000, you'll have 200 people giving $75!
Hey wait a minute. I'm trade-marking that idea. Maybe I'll make a website and start doing this regularly. Look for it starting in June 2007!

That's just a raffle -- something we cannot legally run without state permits in all states. Trust me, I looked into this before we started the auction!

Ummm... Guys I need to know your Feedback rating. :-)
Good luck to all the bidders!
God Bless.

It was discovered in a recent testing by IGN that Playstation 3 doesn’t have support for 1080i, a common High-Definition format used by HDTV’s. Despite 1080p being “the true definition of HD“, most of the titles available are rendered internally at 1280 x 720 and scaled up accordingly...more on http://www.ashgilpin.com/archives/48
