PlayStation 3 charity auction over tomorrow!

Time certainly flies when you're raising cash for charity; our PS3 auction is over tomorrow! Meaning, of course, you've still got time to place your bids. Once again, big thanks to our old pals at BoxWave. Here's what you need to know.

• Real bids only people, this is for charity!
• Five day auction, no reserve. Where else are you gonna snag a PS3 on Christmas eve?
  
• Payment will go directly to Save Darfur, and will be expected to be made within two days of the auction's close.
  
• Since most shippers are closed on Christmas eve and Christmas day, we cannot guarantee overnight shipment to you for Christmas day. But you'll have secured the PS3, and we'll overnight it to you immediately thereafter. Hell, we'll even pay shipping.

As per some legal counsel, the not-so-fine print has changed. This unit is not 100% deductible -- it is only deductible less the $500 cost of the unit. Sorry, that's what Johnny Law says, and to him we abide. So if the PS3 sells for $2,000, you get to deduct $1,500. Still, not bad! Plus 100% of the proceeds still go to Save Darfur, so, what do you say? Let the bidding begin!

i don't understand...

if the ps3 was donated to engadget from box wave then you auction off the ps3 in exchange for a donation to save Darfur then shouldn't the entire donation be tax deductible?

Noa - No, because _you_ are receiving something in exchange for your donation. You are effectively paying $2000 (or whatever the winner pays) for something worth $500, so the $500 is just an "expense" on your part to buy the item and the balance is the charitable donation. That's why if you just give $100 to a charity it's all deductible since you don't receive anything in return. Many charities will send you a letter specifically stating you didn't receive anything in exchange for your donation.

Posting the guys e-mail and then locking the thread not to take the deserved heat for doing so is just as lame, plus posting a bidders e-mail is a violation of using eBay. So while what he did was wrong, your no better for stooping down to his/her level. Your eBay account should get banned for doing so.
