Looks like Fulton Innovation is getting ready to introduce a new system called "eCoupled" at CES next month that uses inductive coupling to wirelessly charge gadgets. We've been hearing about wireless charging solutions for gadgets for, well, years now (remember
Splashpower?), so we wouldn't be surprised to see 2007 come and go with us charging all of our damn gadgets the old fashioned way, but Fulton has lined up some serious partners, including Visteon, Motorola, Mobility Electronics, and Herman Miller (they make office furniture). Their press release today is a little light on specifics, like when we'll actually be able to buy eCoupled-enabled gadgets, but presumably they're saving all that for CES.
It's not wireless power. It's induction. You can't have a generator sitting in the corner of your office, spewing high-frequenqy voltage into the air to power your computer, monitor, phone, etc.
You place your device onto a pad/area and then it will recharge it. It's got to be within, like, 2mm of the device, so you could use speakerphone.

I dont know about you, but I will pass on the chair with the built in inductive pad, as I don't want my eggs fried.
technically, it still is wireless, though q-;
and I hope to finally see this in reality... I remember at least two companies promising it before...
As long as they incorporate this into vehicle consoles we'll all be a lot better off. Just drop your phone, PDA, laptop, bluetooth ear-piece on your vehicle's console, and it'll be charged by the time you get where you're going.
