iriver rolling out iriver plus3 online music store in Korea
Iriver seems pretty tight with MTV's URGE music store here in the States, but that isn't stopping parent company Reigncom from hooking up with a company called Juke On to launch an online music store of its own for the Korean market. Telecoms Korea is a little light on details like pricing, as well as whether or not the new "iriver plus3 online music store" uses PlaysForSure for its DRM or if subscriptions will be offered.

It's always good to see a new company appearing creating some competition on the market. Hope they can live up to the other stores like this one.

I'm interested to see if this has any success. As a foreign resident of Korea (and one who teaches kids), I know that the culture of free downloading of content is rampant in Korea. None of my students ever talk about buying music online -- it's almost an unheard-of concept for them. If Korean music companies begin to prosecute download sites and users in the same way that it happened in the U.S. a few years ago, maybe this iRiver store will see some success. But I'll have to see it for myself to believe it.

Korean Association of Phonogram Producers (KAPP) has tried to take on illegal downloading. They even took Soribada (Korea's largest P2P network) to court. However, because of South Korea's highly developed broadband network it is a uphill battle. South Koreans have access to stuff we can only dream about in the US. Just look at the number of articles Engadget does each time a new electronic goodie comes out in Korea.
