Holiday 2006 console sales figures erroneous
As many of you may or may not have seen, yesterday El Reg ran a story based on a CNBC report which stated that during the holidays (namely from November to December of last year), the numbers shook out such that the big three console game companies moved: 2 million Xbox 360s, 1.8 million Wiis, and 750,000 PS3s. We thought that report sounded a bit dubious, and now according to NPD, CNBC mis-cited a not-yet-existent report. The numbers, which are now considered to be erroneous, don't really correlate to anything on NPD's end as their forthcoming console retail report (which will include compiled retailed sales figures) will not be released for another week or so. (We still don't really have any idea what report it was CNBC was actually citing.) Although it wouldn't really surprise us if Xbox-Wii-PS3 is the actual order the console sales took over the last couple of months, as far as we know there isn't yet any evidence to support that assertion, so we'll all have to wait and see exactly which group of fanboys is proved right or wrong in '06.

Numbers are all over the place 750 000 PS3 then 950 000 PS3... The order shouldn't change and something got to go at SONY to get 75 millions PS3 by 2010 (according to some very serious analyst)
I smell some great journalism right there. Isn't it great to live in a world where if you don't have a real source, you can just make one up?
I wonder why news always sucks...
as i know that I have been at Best Buy where I can see PS3 have plenty in stock while Wii complete sold out in Frisco, TX.
That's mostly because of all the people figured out that they couldn't sell a ps3 for $5,000 on eBay so they returned the ps3's and buyers didn't have fair warning to come into the store and buy it like they do with the huge ads saying that there will be some wii's on sale the coming day.
I don't think SOny has shipped 750,000 units yet. And I don't think they'll sell that many as fast as previous consoles. As a proud owner of the PS3, I think Sony out classed themselves and outpriced their market. They made a unit and priced it for the HT crowd but make their money off of games. I'd get the Xbox if price was an issue or the Wii if 480p was acceptable.
I don't think their is enough HT enthusiast who game to make the PS3 as successful as Sony anticipated. Prices would have to come down a $100-$150 or so to catch on. Not to mention the 8 or so worthy games won't motivate many.
SONY could have easily ship/solded 750,000 units in the North America. They did up production and open another factory that was on stand by incase of emergency. I did see a jump of shipments at my GameStop from 2-3 per week to 4-10 per week. As for the pallets of PlayStation 3's with no takers. I suspect it will die down for sales untill Feburary/March/April where it will pick up right where it left out because that when some of the PlayStation 3's prime IP's are release like Oblivion, Virtual Fighter, Lair, Heavenly Sword, GRAW 2, Assasin's Creed, rumors of Killzone 2/PS3, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Rainbow Six: Vegas, MotorStorm and etc. between those three months. Not to mention the European launch is the first week of March. And thing SONY could do with the console that are left over at Best Buy stores we allocate them to areas where there are in higher demand and focus alot towards the European launch and Japan retailers.
At my local Fry's electronics, there was a Pallet of PS3's (at least 12). No Wii's in site, but watched at least 2 people carry-out 360's through the checkout line.
Fry's electronics had a pallet of PS3 consoles (at least 12). No Wiis, Plenty of 360s. Witnessed at least three people buying the 360 premium package.
Well, well. The Register screwing up numbers again. Remember the iTunes sales that crashed 65%..? That was them too.
Try to think of them as the National Enquirer of tech news and you'll have a better frame of reference for their stories.
In that pic, you HAVE to put the Wii on the stand. It looks dumb otherwise
here in the south dakota iowa region i have seen several stores with ps3's and xboxs but i cant find a wii in sight.
all i want for christmas is a Wii :(
As I stated on engadgethd, all three are great consoles, the question was whether the 360 was really going to pull ahead this season and it didn't.
The 360 sales number will probably be okay and not a complete failure, but by no means the blowout end all argument the fanboys were hoping for.
In Toronto on 24 Dec 2006 PS3 starts selling on Future Shop site only 1000 units available. All sold out in couple of hours. I think its not the matter of price or which console is stronger its your choice. Some people like them all, some people stick to one it all depends. PS3 is not too bad from the price, cause if you sum up the XBOX 360 with the HD DVD drive its as close as the PS3 price. Wii is different, no comparison with the other two its not even HD so as I said it all depends on your choice. Its like most wants to drive BMW but its too expensive :)
The only similarity between a BMW and a PS3 is that you'll pay a premium if you want to own one. However, the BMW is a fine machine whereas the PS3, while full of promises and wishful thinking, isn't worth the extra money.
Yeah, I think that the Wii will prevail. I also see no Wii's in sight lots of PS3's.
I found the report CNBC cited! It's on www.whofuckingcares.com
I know this is probably (definitely) flamebait but honestly, console wars? Sales figures don't matter to me. Unless you own stock in one of these companies the sales numbers shouldn't mean shit to you either. What should matter is which system best satisfies your gaming needs and what you can afford.
As a PSP owner, do I care if the Nintendo sells more DS units than Sony sells PSP's? Nope. The PSP has the games I like, it's portable, it has good graphics and it's cheap. I don't care if I am one of only two PSP owners in the whole world, the system entertains the hell outta me so I own it.
Is there some kind of coalition of people who agreed to post everywhere that PS3's are everywhere and no Wii's can be found? I haven't seen a PS3 anywhere. I don't even want to buy one, but I'm frequently at my local tech stores and I always check for the hell of it. I can tell you that I never see them. I don't see the Wii either. (I also live in the ever-populated state of NJ so maybe thats why) There are always several 360's, even though you could tell they were moving off the shelves pretty well during the holidays. I'm sure the numbers weren't too far off. The 360 is sort of in the sweet spot for power and price, and they were readily available.
I had been without a console for almost 8 months, and I grabbed a 360 with my christmas cash because (1)the price isn't outrageous, (2)there are currently more games available, (3)the jury is still out on Blu-ray and (3 1/2)I can always get the HD-DVD add-on, (4)I haven't seen any definitive evidence that the PS3's graphics are actually superior, and well... (5)it was there.
Those are all to compare to the PS3. The Wii is almost in a different catgory to me, and I'm still considering pullin off the Wii60 combo at some point. If only the Wii had high def. I just know that 480p would bother me on my HDTV.
My roommate and I have a DLP HDTV with the Wii Component cables, it's not quite as awesome as 720p and up, but 480p is still noticabley more clear and easy on the eyes.
I have been without a console since my PS1 died almost 4 years ago, (gasp!). Since then, I have been satisfying my gamer cravings on PC offerings. I am sorry to add to the list of conspirators, but I passed a pallet of thirty-four PS3's, (as did everyone else), at the solitary Best Buy in Bowling Green, KY, on New Year's Day around noon-ish.
While games like Devil May Cry 4, God of War 2 and any Square game coming in the near future are very interesting, they don't do a thing to help me make the attempt to get my girlfriend into the gaming world. The closest she gets is the Sims. I also must pass on the Xbox 360 since I don't want to pay for XBL just yet either, and the Wii has games like Monkeyball and Rayman that are crazy enough and also newbie-friendly enough that she can pick up and go with them. There aren't pistol whip combos, chainsaws, or bumper-trigger key combos to screw up, (although I so wish Gears of War could port to the Wii for the adult who just put the kiddies to bed)
Was in Target in Hackensack, NJ yesterday saw 7PS3's on shelf.
From what I have seen it will shake out something like this
1. PS2
2. 360
3. Wii
4. PS3
I think it will actually turn out to be:
1. DS
2. PS2
3. 360
4. Wii
5. PS3
Who gives a rat's ass? If the profits don't go into my pocket, numbers don't mean shiznit to me.
I'm with Virtruvian. I don't understand why we get so excited over these retail "competitions".
So, here we have a report about some made up numbers being thrown around by CNBC, and all some of you guys can think to do is comment on the six PS3's you saw at your local Best Buy. Do you guys not realize that you may as well be talking about how blue the sky is? It's got nothing to do with this story, and frankly, after 2 or 3 days already it's getting old. On every gaming web site out there under the sun lately, all I'm reading are reports about how easy it is to find PS3's - *as if actually being available in stores is a bad thing*.
But the point is, true or not, good or bad, it's got absolutely nothing to do with this story, or how many systems are actually selling. You don't know if Sony's produced 1 million or 5 million systems as of now, so you don't know whether they've sold 100,000 or 2 million. Just seeing systems sitting on store shelves is meaningless. We all know that stores have been receiving sometimes upwards of 60 more units per week - all over the country. So your seeing them in stores is evidence of nothing more than the fact that Sony's worked out their supply problems (and the fact that you can't find Wiis means Nintendo hasn't worked out theirs yet).
I may not know exactly how many PS3s Sony has produced or shipped, but evidence does seem to suggest that they aren't selling as well. I has some friends working at Toys'R'us and EB Games in the Niagra region this past Christmas and they tell me PS3s are not moving.
Goes some thing like this: PS3 arrives and sits on floor for a week, more PS3s arrive and join the pile on the floor. (Currently no demand for the supply)
Wii arrives in store and promptly is bought and leaves the store. (Demand exceeds supply)
XBOX360 arrives and leaves in a timely fashion. There are always a few in store at anyone time. (Supply is keeping up with demand)
I have to disagree with this on the simple fact that the PS3 is just plain too expensive and too advanced for the majority of consumers. Notice how there are relatively few HD tv owners compared to standard TV owners. This largely has to do with the price and what is available (thousands of dollars compared to hundreds, 15 channels compared to hundreds). Compare Wintel users to Mactel users. There is a reason that Windows was able to take a large chunk of Apple's market share back in the day, and it wasn't because of quality (we all know Windows is terrible, face it). Compare Honda with BMW. Sony is pulling the same sort of stuff by packaging in Blu-Ray when no one really wants it right now and definitely can't afford it. Combine that with no games and cheaper competition from the Xbox 360 and you have units on the shelves.
I think it is quite relevant to discuss what is and what isn't on the store shelves. People simply don't want the PS3, as I found out when I was standing in line at Target on Dec. 17th to try and get a Wii. No one was there for the PS3; some girl tried to sell her ticket for the PS3 once Target opened, but no one wanted to buy it. Her bet to sell it to some late arriving person didn't pay off.
Those numbers sounded weird based on what I'd been hearing from store managers. I've heard from several stores that they sold significantly more PS3s during the holidays than Wiis due to the steady stream of shipments of PS3s (3 shipments per week, 3-8 systems per shipments) versus the small number of Wii shipments (3 shipments total, 5-12 systems per shipment).
Costco alone sold nearly 100 PS3s locally. They only received, and sold, a couple dozen Wii.
I expect the final numbers to be far closer than most think...

WHAT'S UP WITH THE STRONG PS2 SALES?
- Top console sales this season? Playstation 2! (with Xbox 360 close behind).
- 2/3rd’s of all software sold this holiday season? Playstation 2!
- 64% of revenue from Software titles? Playstation 2!
This seems to suggest that there are still a lot of “fence sitters” waiting on nextgen prices to come down? Or maybe the PS2 is a painless purchase at this point (low price and thousands of titles)? And who know maybe knowing that those titles can “play-forward” is somehow comforting? Well Ladies and Gentlemen; I think the lady, (PS2), still has legs. Yes?

"As many of you may or may not have seen"
Actually,
ALL of us may have seen.
and
ALL of us may not have seen.
so certainly
ALL of us may or may not have seen.
I think it will actually turn out to be:
1. Jump Rope
2. DS
3. PS2
4. 360
5. Wii
6. PS3
C'mon, lets be serious here and compare only systems in the same "class", albeit it's debatable that the Wii is in the same class as the 360 and PS3. Myself, I would have 3 classes; Handhelds, Last Gen (including non-HD), and Current Gen.
Handhelds are obvious
Last Gen would include PS2, GameCube, XBOX, and Wii
Current Gen would include 360 and PS3
You can see that each of the devices in any of the groups share a similar consumer target. Handhelds taget those looking for gaming on the go, Last Gen targets the average Joe that does not need bleeding edge technology but wants to play console games on TV, and Current Gen targets the more active gamers and A/V geeks that want the latest and greatest in graphics, audio, and possibly HT.
PS3 (1.3 million) 800,000 US and 500,000 Japan.
Isn't Microsoft affiliated with CNBC?
Smells like a rat to me.
This is only to show you what a JEALOUSY CRAP this engadget is, NPD did released the infromation and stated that it was NOT CONCLUSIVE and that the final info would be released by the end of the month: http://blog.americasnewstoday.com/2007/01/03/microsofts-xbox-360-outsells-nintendos-wii-sonys-ps3.aspx
The people behind this site can't hide their true colors and hate for MICROSOFT that NUMBER #1 software company is the world -- whatever you liek it or not -- numbers don't lie, 95% computers in this planet use WINDOWS systems.
Please keep writing your asian products posts and leave the NUMBERS to the real tech people.

Straight from NPD is this quote "Recent media reports erroneously cited The NPD Group as having provided to CNBC December '06 retail sales for the video game industry. Although the specific CNBC segment included NPD's November '06 console hardware install base sales figures, there were no sales figures or forecasts from NPD for December 2006. NPD's December/Year-End sales data will become available Jan 11."
"Last Gen would include PS2, GameCube, XBOX, and Wii"
You realize there's more to next generation gaming then graphics, right? I mean you can pretty up the same old garbage as much as you want to but it's not going to make me buy a PS3 for it. Personally I think it's reasonable to consider the Wii as being the only real next generation system as it's the only one to do anything even remotely innovative. To me "slightly prettier and a lot more expensive" does not a next gen system make.

I clearly stated that this was the way I, keyword (I), would break them down. These are still called VIDEO games, and to me that means that the VIDEO part is integral. And for the record, the Wii is not the only console that works with motion sensing controllers nor was Nintendo the innovator of a motion sensing video game controller, as Microsoft had such a controller on the market back in the 90's.
I will have to agree with the whole "coalition of the misleading" theory. last week (dec. 27) me, my brother and his GF were on a quest for a wireless guitar for guitar hero 2. now let me tell you I live in chicago, and we went to 2 best buys and a circuit city in the city.....not one had a PS3 or Wii in stock, but all had 360s and at broadway and diversey BB they had a whole stackpile of 360s (premiums nonetheless)so I don't know where this info is comeing from about ps3's in stock but I have yet to see 1
At Best Buy, they had about 7 or 8 PS3 consoles just sitting right there as you walked in, trying to get rid of them, while at Circuit City they were trying to keep as many as possible - Peoria, IL. My Friend's son has a Wii, PS3, PS2, GC, 80gig iPod, and a 1500$ VAIO, although for some reason is 'Anti-XBOX'.
Because he hasn't used XBMC.
Look, if you guys don't want PS3s can you ship a couple over to the UK - I'm moving shortly and it would make my new house a very happy place! If you are reading this you are a geek (or techie at least) and you cannot begin to understand how stupid the general public is. No one understands HD, no one can begin to understand what these new machines are capable of. Mum and dad are buying what they can afford - PS2 - they could have made it a different colour and not bothered with the PS3.
We care.
CNBC didn't "mis-cite" anything. A few members of the gaming media simply lack listening comprehension skills, and various misinterpretations of the CNBC report were passed around the 'net like a social disease in a college dormitory. The numbers that CNBC cited were early estimates from NPD, and were clearly noted as such. Furthermore, the estimates were for sales from the beginning of November to Christmas, not to the end of the year. Finally, for the intelligent members of this forum who are (quite reasonably) questioning the accuracy of the Wii numbers, they were intended to reflect sales throughout the Americas, not just in the United States. A more accurate US-only guess would probably be about 1.4-1.5 million Wiis sold by Christmas, with another 150k or so sold during the last week of 2006.
Here in Hong Kong, the story is kinda like this:
There are enough Xbox360s in retail to EXPORT.
There are enough Wiis to go around, but only the Japanese version, which retails for roughly USD269.92.
There are hardly ANY US Wiis, but they CAN be found AND bought, if you are prepared to shell out the equivalent of USD462.72. Ouch! That's almost double the price!
PS3s can be found, perhaps not as many as the Japanese Wii, but they are definitely available for - guess what? slighty LESS than retail (well, US retail, at least)!
Anyway, maybe you should just find an excuse to visit Hong Kong because the hardware is definitely around, ready to be snapped up by hard-up gamers like yourself! ;)
