Engadget Software

Developers: the proposition is simple. Develop Engadget software, and as you might expect, we'll post about it -- but we'll also host your builds here. Sorry, we're not offering CVS, purchasing services or anything like that, just a fat pipe for the community to download your Engadget software creations.
Users: feel free to check back here for the latest versions. We can't guarantee they won't blow up your computer or crash a lot or anything, but where else are you going to find Engadget software? Also, we'd love to hear about what kind of Engadget software you'd like to see built -- maybe someone who's up to the task will start in on the project (see above).
Check out our widgets after the break!
Apple OS X Dashboard widget (v2.1)
By Nicolas Vignolo
V2.1: Very pretty Dashboard widget with early (read: not yet functional) support for all foreign translations of Engadget. Sorry, our foreign sites are not yet using our new feeds, don't blame Nicolas.
P.S. -Anyone remember version 1?
Windows Vista Gadget (v1)
By Andy Earnshaw
V1: We haven't tested this one yet, but Andy did a slick job with the design. We can't wait to check it out on our new Vista-loaded Ferrari laptop. Oh, wait... Anyhow, Andy welcomes suggestions here.
Yahoo! Widgets widget (v1)
By Maneki Neko
V1: We haven't yet tested this one, but it looks like this is your joint for Engadget + Yahoo! Widgets that work right now. Let us know! (Oh, there are also plenty more here, including a Spanish version.)
Konfabulator / Yahoo! Widgets, um, widget (v1.01)
By Akram Hussein
V1.01: Looks like Akram hasn't updated this puppy in a while, and from the sound of things it no longer works since we went through our redesign. You might want to give Maneki Neko's widget (above) a try.

READY FOR THE KILLER ENGADGET APP SUGGESTION?
How about an Engadget headline ticker?
Sorta like this one from Yahoo.
http://edit.ticker.yahoo.com/config/slv4_page?.p=ticker
Alot of us tech heads are hard at work and having a "scrolling push app" that retrieves updates at certain intervals would be awesome. Soooo can someone get on that? ;^)...

I'd love to have a version available as a "portableapp" (portableapps.com)
We had a company wide standardization last year which removed all kinds of software and removed admin rights from EVERYONE on their local machine. I refused to use IE and have since found portableapps to be really great!
Tiger @ Jan 4th 2007 4:35PM
Yeah, but not too sure what you want to be an app? After all, it's just a website. Unless you are refering to one of the feed readers?
Tiger @ Jan 4th 2007 4:33PM
I can do a WindowBlinds theme for you guys, would have to look into an msstyles version if there is interest. And it will take me a while anyway, as I have school to worry about, but it will be done. And also, I could do a userbar for Engadget readers!
Mile @ Jan 4th 2007 4:43PM
How about an Engadget HD & BR DVD Backup Suite? That would rock!
vinny @ Jan 4th 2007 5:19PM

Mike @ Jan 4th 2007 6:08PM
I want one with pictures...
brendan Sheehan jnr @ Jan 4th 2007 6:17PM
Notice the Mac OS X widget looks the best.. I'm just sayin'.
3rdsun @ Jan 4th 2007 6:32PM
In your dreams, the yahoo widget is definately better. Notice the dark glass and how each headline is separated. I use this one all the time and the other languages work too.
brendan Sheehan jnr @ Jan 4th 2007 8:31PM
I suppose it's just a matter of taste, you should go get some.. zing!
William C Bonner @ Jan 4th 2007 7:22PM
A java based reader that I could run on my T-Mobile RAZR over the web would be cool.
CT A @ Jan 4th 2007 7:35PM
How about a stand alone one? One that is transparent and stays on top of everything.
Why does the Windows one look crappier then Apple.. (Yes I know... Apple is the best.. But can't Windows users get some love too?)
Aaron Hoffman @ Jan 4th 2007 8:28PM
If anybody is willing to develope it I'd love a linux version! (I'm thinking about learning C to code it, but don't count on it Linux users...)

Share Engadget on your blog or myspace.
Put engdaget (windows only for now) as a FULL desktop sidebar.
Supports pictures, Flash video and mp3 enclosures. (I've added google suggested video to this one to show you how it works)
Have fun.
We love Engadget!!!!

MythTV plug-in - List of headlines in main form then clickable to either the MythBrowser or a formatted version in the plug-in, with photos(some RSS readers don't aggregate the photos).

Joel Rossel @ Jan 5th 2007 9:37AM

"we're not offering CVS [...] just a fat pipe for the community"
Whoa.
Mark Deab @ Jan 5th 2007 10:04AM
Just thought I would mention the grammar on the OSX Dashboard Widget is wrong, it's meant to be 2nd January not 2th January
Tim @ Jan 5th 2007 3:41PM
How about developers surprise us all by actually making more stable software rather than have us pay to be their beta testers? Is that too much to ask?
Tom T. @ Jan 7th 2007 6:28AM
it would be great to see a link that would automatically optimize engadget for the nintendo wii's opera browser - with graphics and article, text, etc. all sized to look best and take up the entire view area of the wii browser. it could also convert any audio and video content to flash format and play through a web flash player also optimized to fill the entire wii opera display.
Jake Weierman @ Jan 9th 2007 6:55PM
Mine stopped working after the first day. I've tried trashing it and re-downloading it to no avail. Anyone else having problems with the Dashboard Widget for OsX?
Magickam @ Jan 16th 2007 8:54PM
A toolbar for IE and Firefox? That would be very easy to do and you could have engadget's search engine in it and RSS feeds.
Nathan Ziarek @ Mar 29th 2007 1:44PM
Where are our screensavers? Didn't that contest end like two weeks ago now?
