Nokia N800 Internet Tablet unboxed
Well surprise surprise, it looks like Nokia is taking a bit different branding tact with its 770 successor, adding it to the N series and giving it a fancy new N800 moniker. Oh, and did we mention it's been unboxed? Yeah, that's right, the new Internet Tablet hasn't gotten even as much as a release date yet, but it's already been party to that most geeky of rituals. So head on past the break and see this shiny wonder for yourself, there's even some live webcam action to be had -- what's there to lose?

I have added all the specs to a datasheet on Carrypad.
Will keep it up to date. http://www.carrypad.com/product/product.php?id=56
Should help people to get the latest info.
Steve
I got into the proc folder, i clicked on both cpuinfo and meminfo and sorry, there is no information.
I wrote up a small review for now:
The N800 features a higher quality feel overall. The metallic feel of the case feels more professional than the previous model. The built-in stand also feels excellent. It has a nice metallic click and has two open positions. Opening the stand reveals the outside SD card slot. Very similiar to the previous model, pull the tab open and insert the card.
The battery compartment is easy to open, just a simple pull on the chrome metal tab and it opens with ease. Removing the panel the battery and internal SD card slot are visible.
The stylus has been redesigned to a shorter model. I like this far better than the previous one, which was too long to be comfortable. It is a triangular shape and offers more surface areas to grip. Sadly though the satisfying magnetic 'click' of putting the stylus back is now gone, replaced by a plastic click.
The outter screen feels solid compared to the last model. Tapping on the screen provides more tactile feedback (due to the harded surface). Tapping on letter keys color-flips the key to let you know that you typed that key.
I have mixed feelings about the outside navigation/buttons on the unit. I feel that the left side controls are all updated and better placed (the 4 way control fits perfect on the thumb now). The top buttons are now smaller and closer together, which makes them easier to reach but somewhat harder to press for those with larger fingers.
The onscreen keyboard feels better when used. I love the highlighting of the pressed key when using the stylus or hand (letting you know what key you hit). Also the added space after the predictive textis gone, and it seems to remember paired words (I searched for the word "Taco" then the word "Freedom" earlier, when I typed in "Taco" again, it immediately suggested the word "Freedom" after it). Ive also noticed the n800 figures out when im touching with my finger, and makes some icons bigger. Nice touch.
The Flash seems to be upgraded, and now most items on a Myspace page appear, even though they are slow. Same with youtube, after buffering is completed the video plays. Audio is good enough, but video is choppy at best. The increased memory helps, and I have hopes that this can be cleared up with updated firmware.
The speakers on the outside are much louder and higher quality.
Also the 4 way nav has a blue LED behind it, so when there is updated info on the unit, you can set it to pulse if you like. There is a Bluetooth icon on the home page, and you can single click it for options (like disconnect/invisble mode).
I can also confirm that there are settings for a bluetooth keyboard & hardware keyboard. I will try and find a way to hook up some USB devices to it and see what works.
For now thats all I have. I will post more as I do some more playing around with it.
i have already ordered for a nokia n800 and i just wanna know whether i can install yahoo messenger on it.and its plays videos frm youtube and other flash application..bcz i was havin 770 and it dosent plays youtube at all...thanks
Can anyone tell me which side the power cable plugs into?
Sariea - just a couple of corrections.
The processor is about 320Mhz, but the specific model is as yet unidentified.
Internaly memory is now doubled - 128Mb RAM and 256Mb flash (was 64Mb/128Mb in 770).
There are two full-size SD Memory card slots. These are compatible with MMC, RS-MMC and mini/micro-SD cards using various adapters. Owners of N800s have reported success with 4GB SD memory cards.
Deckard and all,
FYI: CPU is TI OMAP 2420
European owners can order the N800 direct from Nokia:
http://direct.nokia.com/countries.aspx?model=n800
UK price is £269 inc VAT+shipping.
Germany is 399 EUR.
There are substantially higher prices (about $520) than those in the US (eg. $400 in CompUSA, $360 in Nokia NYC store) when using the extremely good EUR/USD and GBP/USD exchange rates. That said, £269 is only £24 more than the launch price of the 770.
I suppose its either the 2420 or 2430. http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbugencontent.tsp?templateId=6123&navigationId=11988&contentId=4638
Thank you again as well Deckard.
http://www.nokiausa.com seems to have these available right now and it's up on their front page.
$399.99 and free shipping!
"up to 2GB" is no good: 2GB cards are already dirt cheap, and I am finding myself wanting to have much more than 2GB of storage space. I really, really hope this can be upgraded to SDHC or else it sucks, imo ;)
I know this is quite a late comment in terms of this post however, I just had an epiphany and I do agree about this product not being very useful without sdhc support. Here is the thing, currently the latest experimental Linux kernel (2.6.19) doesn't even support sdhc cards. However, from judging by this post...
http://lists.openwall.net/linux-kernel/2007/01/01/62
i'm thinking support may be reality some time soon. So, depending on if the hardware is built up to sdhc spec if and when the kernel update does become available there should be support or not definitively.
This may be old hat to a lot of people but I'm going to say it anyhow. Up till now sd card compatibility with Linux has only been achieved because sd card was backwards compatible with the mmc. So it is possible to use sd cards with Linux but you don't get any of the benefits of the sd interface. The reason there is up until now no native support is because the sd format is not open or free for that matter. However, hopefully things will progress for reasons listed in the link above, and in a few months I can sport a n800 with 16gb of flash goodness.
I think it supports 2GB memory-cards, but you can have two of them. So the total amount of storage is 4GB, plus the 256MB of built-in flash.
جميل اوى ونفسى فى كمان بس مش معاى فلوس والله
I too would like to know where I can get detailed specs for the N800. like process speed, wifi radio distance, ram, video camera res, and so on...anybody know, let me know. But Its looking like i will get one of these cool babys!
I guess if your not a true Linux geek, then you probably would get frustrated with a device like this, and end up using a TREo! ha!
i need to know if it supports aim?
-does the nokia n800 have aim
-comment me back and reply plz!!
does the nokia n800 have aim on itt??
or does google talk support aim!?
-reply back w/ answers
Here's a video of it, pretty cool! http://www.personalumpc.com/nokia-n800/
I haven't found any posts anywhere about having difficulty making the browser work. I can connect to my network, but can't go anywhere. Every other device I have connects except this one. I may give one last shot at an open wifi spot, and if I can get it to work there, at least I will know it works. If not, it is going back, restocking fee or not.

:( mine only has a white screen and no battery status. me scared.
Can one access yahoo voice on this device?
If you can, then provided the wifi connection is good, one can preetymuch use it as a phone having voicemail and number with approx $10 phone bill a month with int'l calling and 500 mins
does it take pics with the cam?
Yes it does take pics via a application install. It natively supports video, but the camera app is an easy install. The system has a really nice basic application manager (similar to YaST if you use it on SuSE or another Linux Distro, or similar to Windows Add/Remove Programs but with more advanced options). All that is needed, is go to Maemo.org and go to the Downloads section, there are a ton of great apps. Just as a note to previous comments. With the latest OS update (official version from Nokia), ther is SD HC support, 8 GB cards work perfect (you can have a total of 16 GB plus internal memory). The Open Source Community is on top of providing support for higher capacity cards, so the recently announced 32 GB cards that will be released Q4 2007/Q1 2008 will work with the device in no time if not already (that will give you 64 GB of capacity). As far as instant messaging goes, it supports Pidgin and Gaim (if you're not familiar, support MSN, AIM, ICQ, Novell Groupwise, Yahoo, and several others.). Natively it supports Google Chat and now Skype.
I use this device as an all in one pretty much, Internet browser (Opera is natively installed, and a version of Firefox is now available), PDA (GPE suite is great for calendars, etc.), MP3 player (Rhaphsody is natively installed as well as another audio player, there are quite a to choose from), video player (there is a pre-installed player, but mplayer and several others are available), VNC on the go (there are several apps available so I can access my linux or windows box anytime (while having an internet connection), it's awesome!), picture viewer, Bible/eBook reader, voice recorder. etc etc the list goes on. Sorry for the long post, but there are a ton of awesome things you can do with this device! Plus linux is a huge plus! :)
