Dell's been dropping hints about a new XPS 710 gaming PC with super-secret "Black Ice" cooling technology for a couple of weeks now, and while there hasn't been an official announcement yet (we're expecting something soon at CES), we did manage to get the scoop on the new "XPS 710 H2C" courtesy of a well-placed source. Turns out that "Black Ice" is a "two-stage thermoelectric/liquid cooling solution" that is up to "9 degrees celsius cooler than the [regular] XPS 710 air cooling solution." Other specs include a black aluminum casing, an
Intel QX6700 Core 2 Extreme processor, 4GB DDR2 RAM, dual 768MB
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX SLI Enabled graphics cards, and a 320GB RAID 0 array. List price is a hefty $5,499.

Hopefully the cooling solution will be self contained in the case. There are enough wires, boxes and sockets for users to deal with already.

$5499 = subsidy for generic box = still a Dell.

'$5499.'
Which Dell never tells you that you can usually shave about 20% off their price, and make it yourself, and still have enough cash left over to take your friends to lunch.
:)
Nonetheless, it's good to see the computer makers from hell are embracing the liquid cooling technology as well.

So its a water cooling system called Black Ice, just like the Black Ice radiators made by Danger Den. Either Dell are using Danger Den products in this thing, or we're going to be seeing another lawsuit on our hands.

OK-- $5499 = subsidy for generic box (with coupon) = still a Dell.
StevO @ Jan 6th 2007 7:17PM
yeah that IS what danger den's line of radiators are called
i thought it sounded familiar
seems like a big oversight by Dell

This isn't a feature, it's an implementation detail. Is this the best that Dell can do?

Macs are expensive....

Thermoelectric? ...There'll be Peltiers involved then

Wait a minute. Black ice is what my car hits just before I crash. So now I can crash in the safety of my own office?

even if the processor, gfx cards and HDs were overpriced, I still couldnt see spending more than 4k on this.
