Is this Apple's iWork spreadsheet app?

ThinkSecret has unearthed what appears to be a screenshot of the oft-rumoured forthcoming spreadsheet application expected to ship with a future version of iWork -- either the app is still very early in development, or Apple plans to take its minimalist design ethic to new heights (lows?) with this anti-Excel app. Internally referred to as Lasso, the spreadsheet is expected to be named Numbers or Charts, offer Excel import/export, templates for typical personal and business finance, sales, and marketing, and 200+ spreadsheet functions to help those business types stick it to Microsoft -- but from the looks of the above screenshot, don't be throwing away your copies of Office just yet.

Update: That screenshot is looking pretty fake, after all.

Even google spreadsheets looks better than that... and from the looks of it it has more functionality too...
Isn't apple supposed to make good software?
I dunno..
The Office '07 Beta 2 managed to throw a bunch of crap you'll never use into almost no space, so they may be shooting for the same principle here. It sure looks very... 'Zen', but I wouldn't say it's too shabby looking either.

Ms Dybwad is back! YAY!
I think it only works with whole numbers.
I wouldn't be surprised if they'd pulled this screenshot out of their collective asses. Alternatively it could be a very alpha screenshot.
Ha! This just in http://digg.com/apple/Apple_Lasso_screenshot_was_a_fake
I've heard that it's a big fake while looking at the Digg homepage.

From what I gather from the Mac vs PC ads, spreadsheets are soooo PC... why would anyone want one on their mac?
NO, it's a part of Apple's Pages or Keynote program. It has very minimal spreadsheet capabilities.
no, it's not.
this rumor has come and gone... you're a little late.
Even if it were true, why would we need another app? Google does a good job if you are a minimalist. OpenOffice does a good job if you like/need the complex features. And both are free. And both run on Apple ,PC and Linux computers.
To answer the question: no.
But I'm really waiting for the Apple spreadsheet to complete the iWork suite. I will then definitively get rid of M$ Office!
the point of Pages was not to compete directly with Word, but to give people a templated, easy-to-use word processing app that had the grace and feel of an iLife app. this is just like that, but for spreadsheets. i don't think they're going to tout it as an excel replacement, but rather some of excel's more intermediate-advanced features in an easy to use UI.
no, it's not.

There's no way "Numbers" will look anything like Excel. If you want to see the basics of what Apple's probably cooking, look no further than Quantrix.
Quantrix is a 4D spreadsheet application that allows amazing flexibility in visualizing your data. You have to try it to believe it. It started life on the NeXT OS, made by a company called Lighthouse. Sadly, they were purchased by Sun in the late 90's, and were never heard from again, after the Java ports of their applications completely failed to perform. Quantrix, however, has been resurrected.

Furthermore, Apple's Keynote product is *already* eerily similar to Lighthouse's once-magnificent "Concurrence" presentation software, so why shouldn't the fruit-flavored spreadsheet application follow suit?
