It'll be nearly a year and a half since it was
first introduced at CES 2006, but the
Robosapien RS Media -- already available in the UK -- is finally poised for a US release this summer. According to a Wowwee representative at a media event this evening, the multimedia-focused humanoid (as you may recall, it rocks a digital video camera, chest-mounted LCD, and MP3 playback capabilities) will retail for a cool $300, but those three Benjamins do get you the most interactive and customizable Robosapien on the market. Sadly, despite the many petitions we've sent to Wowwee, that popular
flamethrower accessory is not included.

I wonder if you can use the camera to connect it to a pc wirlessly, and use it through the video cmaera.

That $300 USD price is a really good price and at that level I think it will sell really well. You can create your own personalities with 221 different sound "slots" and add your own body animation sequences. I expect a large user community to develop with people sharing custom personalities the way kids share Pokemon trading cards. In the meantime, I'm maintaining a news update page for this talented little robot:

I hope it's better than the original Robosapien I own. After sitting on my shelf for a few weeks, it would no longer walk on my smooth wood floors -- it would waddle in place, but not actually move an inch (new batteries didn't solve the problem). I see TONS of reports of v2 not being able to walk properly, so I kinda expect the new version to suck (what good is the video camera if you can't make the robot walk where you want it to?).

Wow, that's dorky. Mount it on the dashboard of your Chevy for extra stupidity points.

On the gadget show, here in the UK, they had the RS media on the show. During a to camera piece, the robosapien began to feel up presenter, Suzi Perry. Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRRRLWI-KbY

There will be two contests at the JavaOne Developers Conference (starting today) to program the RS Media robot: the first one is a contest in making it boogie. The second contest involves using all the robot's skills and powers to escape a fiendish maze.
