Dell launches E228WFP 22-inch widescreen LCD
While that 2707WFP is hogging the spotlight with all its pixels and inches, Dell's E228WFP just hit the US -- it's been trotting around Japan and Canada for a week or three -- and at a mere $329 it ain't kidding around. The display features one of those 22-inch widescreen panels that are apparently the new hawterness for Vista, and of course that new brushed aluminum design that Dell is slowly rolling out to its new displays. There's a standard 1680 x 1050 resolution and DVI-HDCP plug, but otherwise this one's a bit light on features -- though we're sure that won't matter too terribly much when you're busy yukking it up with Vista Gadgets and other fancy new OS features.

The monitor sucks.
TN+Film 6bit monitor is what this thing is.
vinegar @ Jan 9th 2007 4:15PM
will these new monitors have full HDCP compliance over DVI rather than only up to 720p like the 2407?
Sean @ Jan 9th 2007 4:20PM
Woot! Just ordered 2!! They are only $296 on dell.com Small Business section.
I have been waiting for this for a while. The only real cost-effective alternative was the Samsung 225BW. Nice enough panel but terribly ugly (cheap) casing and stand.
And the Dell is $50 cheaper. :)

I don't know what B0000rt is talking about but I guess he could always explain.
I have one. Got it for C$300 during boxing week. It is definately great a great value. The panel quality is somewhat lacking. You get light leaking at the top and bottom edges when the screen is black. Overall I would recommed it to someone on a budget. Works well for gaming too.

"I don't know what B0000rt is talking about but I guess he could always explain."
I'd like clarification too. You always see those comments whenever a new LCD display comes out. I'd love to know where they get the info and how to tell the good from the bad.

If you want LCD information:

And the original poster's website:

I'm Canadian and have this monitor. Just so you know, it does support 720p with hdcp fully, however it DOES NOT support 1080p!! It is a mere 10 pixels short on the height to allow for 1080p playback. Some devices may allow you to set a custom resolution output to compensate for this and then you'd have near 1080p, however, the PS3 will NOT do this, and you will be stuck using 720p on your monitor.

"that are apparently the new hawterness for Vista"
What does "hawterness" mean????
ashgilpincom @ Jan 9th 2007 11:20PM
That's a damn nice monitor. I have the 24" at my office - very nice picture.

SOMEONE RELEASE AN ISP 22" Monitor :( !!
Shik @ Jan 10th 2007 1:28PM
B0000rt is right.
This is a monitor with the cheap TN panel, but all dell monitors with the name starting with E, have that. And it is only 6 bit color depth.
So this is not a monitor for graphic work.

No USB ports Not Ultasharp
JAC @ Jan 12th 2007 9:57AM
B0000rt is apparently unclear on the whole "entry-level" concept.
Yes, B0000rt, it's a 6-bit TN panel, with all the inherent limitations. It's not suitable for graphic design or photography, but it's just fine for web surfing, office applications and gaming.
For CDN $299, it's a great deal, and the cheapest I've seen for a 22".

Mine arrives on Monday, so I'll see how it is. Got it for $296 on Dell Small Business. It's replacing an old RasterOps SusperScan MC 21HR CRT so I'm sure it will probably be night and day difference.

Ordered mine 10PM, Jan 15. Picked it up today Jan 18th at UPS. Works great, looks great. Had some difficulty with setting resolution. Settled on 1280x800 so far. Graphics card won't go to 1680x1050. Any suggestions which graphics card should be used to get the best performance or what is best resolution?
Dan @ Jan 24th 2007 9:15AM
I use a eVGA GeForce 6800 XT on mine and it works great!
Dell @ Jan 30th 2007 8:11PM
I just got mine 2 days ago, and it works beautifully. I don't do pro graphic design, but for web surfing, watching movies, amateur graphic design, and office applications, it has a crisp clear screen.
For people that find they can't get 1650 x 1050 initially, upgrade your graphic drivers. There are Nvida, ATI, and SIS drivers available. I had integrated video, and upgraded my SIS drivers (search google for SIS 651 or whatever yours is) and now i get the native 1650 x 1050 ... you WANT to do this, don't settle for 1024x768 or 1280x1024, the scaling ruines the clarity of the native LCD screen.
I got mine for $300 Canadian during boxing day. Great value if you're using a monitor all day!
Meint @ Mar 3rd 2007 7:30AM
Hi Dell (or anyone who can help me with this one),
You mention that you downloaded the Sis 651C driver which supports
widescreen. I have been looking and downloading several Sis 651 drivers now
but they all appear to be the same as the one I already have or a version that does not support widescreen. Can you specify which version you downloaded in order to get the right results? Thanks in advance.

what's a better deal? This dell or the samsung 225bw for $50 more? Anybody know a site cheaper than T***rDirect.com?
Bóòbies @ Feb 22nd 2007 2:44PM
Yo,
Anyone knows if I could 'interchange' the base from my 1905FP monitor?
I really like the rotation height adjustable feature of my 19 incher but going bigger without it, I don't know...that's the whole point of bigger watching DVD and what more important to havd the screen at the right place...
Thwe minute some1 tells me I could switch the stands, I'm ordering one of those...
Thanks in advance.

Just got mine.
This monitor exhibits a pink/gray instead of gray.
Stay away from these things! The light leakage is bad too.
Work got it for me, but not too happy with it.
Victor Song @ Sep 13th 2007 1:32AM
hey do you think a Nvidia GeForce 8300 GS graphics card wil work well with this? I just ordered a new computer from Dell.
Chocoholic_Jedi @ Apr 12th 2008 1:31PM
I just ordered this monitor a few days ago. I've got a Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 420...don't know if that card's gonna cut it. Does anyone know if it'll support full 720p resolution? If not, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks alot in advance...
myke.hd @ May 8th 2008 9:15AM
My dad recently bought this display and I've been taking it for a spin on my computer. I have noticed colour banding, which shows it isn't really a display suited to graphic design work (a few people have mentioned that). The viewing angle is really shallow and it might have helped if Dell shipped these with a taller stand.
It's a steal at £140 though, given the size of it. Movies look good on it. Sadly the designer/photographer point of view is going to put this display down. If you're not a working professional looking for a high standard of image quality then it isn't really an issue.
Bottom line - You get what you pay for.
