According to Senior VP Takao Yuhara at Sony, that
pre-launch price cut in Japan might not be the only one the console will be seeing in its early life. "We may look at the price as part of our strategy to expand the market when the timing is right," said Yuhara. Sony wants to break even in its game division by March 2008, and "Such factors, including price cuts to some extent, are factored in," according to Yuhara. Sony is also still holding fast to its target shipment of 6 million PS3s by March 31st 2007, and with the Wii and 360 breathing down its neck, it might very well have to drop prices to compete. Of course, the semi-promise of some sort of price cuts, possibly Japan-only, before March 2008 is isn't really much to go by, but we'll take whatever threads of hope we can get.

doesn't announcing the possibility of price cuts only deter people from purchasing the console now, if they think they will be able to get it cheaper if they just wait a little longer? why even mention price cuts?
Maverick @ Jan 31st 2007 11:40PM
I guess some people are hanging out for price cuts,
so when they see how long it will be, they are more
likely to purchase one in the near future.

ps3 rocks!

If anything else if they want to really capture the HD movie market the player is GOING to have to drop in price. HD-DVD players will continue to fall in price and if the PS3 doesn't?
tiuk @ Jan 31st 2007 11:59PM
Sooo.. why did they just RAISE the price in Canada?
Adam @ Feb 1st 2007 12:08AM
Futureshop raised the price, not sony.
Andir3.0 @ Feb 1st 2007 12:10AM
so they can lower it back down last minute? ...or maybe Sony does have some smart marketing and they decided to keep the price high for release to avoid the Wii incident where the gamer couldn't get his hands on a unit if they tried? There's all kinds of reasons, but I dont see a price cut till Q4 at the earliest.

I hope there is a title wave of games and online content coming or price cuts might be the norm as HD-DVD and BluRay players go down in price.

Keep sucking on that bottle of gin and juice brother!

I'm sure they are over time, like any console released in the history of the world, but there are no indications of US/Europe getting them any time soon.

To meet their March 31 deadline of 6 million units must mean that they are now manufacturing roughly 5 million units per quarter. That translates to 20 million PS3 per year. Assuming they drop the price to $400, that comes to $8 Billion per year of PS3 hardware sale. Surely they must be able to break even at $400 a unit. Don’t forget that the PS2 sold 1.4 million units in December while the PSP sold 0.95 million the same month - which are both priced affordably ($200 or less). They have delivered on the technology, now all that’s left is the price. Though $600 for the PS3 is an unbelievably low price for all the technology (Blu-ray player, Cell processor, 60 GB hard disk, HDMI 1.3, etc, etc.) that’s packed in it, they still need to do something to induce a good percentage of their 120 million PS2 customers to purchase the PS3; and price may be the biggest barrier.

what the devil does that mean?!?! expand the market when the time is right?!
what time is that?! 3 years after launch?! thats what Sega thought about the Saturn thought too!
Panther_V @ Feb 1st 2007 12:37AM
Sony just should have thought ahead that selling a $600 without one killer app is stupid. They really need devil May Cry 4 , Lair , one Square enix RPG and a decent exclusive racing game.
lou @ Feb 1st 2007 12:45AM
Saying that there is a price cut looming keeps would be purchasers from going out and getting a Wii or X360
publicemail @ Feb 1st 2007 1:16AM
Just buy it from Circuit City, then return it within the return period... buy it again from Best Buy, repeat till happy with price...
Castle @ Feb 1st 2007 1:34AM
>>Sony just should have thought ahead that selling a $600 without one killer app is stupid.
Should be remembered that the 360 had ass for games when it came out, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, and Call of Duty.
DEEZNUTZ @ Feb 1st 2007 11:13AM
WTF are you talking about? COD a year + later is WAY better than ANYTHING PS3 has out right now... INCLUDING RFoM.
Damn SONY FANBOTS!!!

There's an interview with Jack Tretton, the President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, in the latest issue of Game Informer magazine. Naturally they asked him about the pricing, and he basically says there won't be a price cut for a long, long time. More specifically, a price cut won't be coming for the PS3 as soon as it did for the PS2, and when it does it'll likely be smaller. So don't hold your breath, people.
Daikon @ Feb 1st 2007 8:50AM
The PS3 shortage in Japan is over, anyone who wants one can purchase one.
The problem is that at 60.000 yen and without any decent games nobody wants one.
Jon Acheson @ Feb 1st 2007 9:27AM
I wonder if Sony will do some kind of a price drop before GTA4 comes out, just to keep everyone from buying the 360 to play it with.
I'm guessing $50 is most likely, though a $100 drop would really shake things up. At $399, the low-end PS3 would be a 360 killer. Though, most likely Microsoft would simply drop the price of the 360.
Goodman @ Feb 1st 2007 9:43AM
The last week I checked (the week of January 21) the Wii was outselling the PS3 in Japan 4 to 1. And that's with plentiful PS3s over there, and the PS3 already having a lower price in Japan. Why should a price cut in the US be any more effective, especially if it just triggers a price drop in the XBox 360?
Matt B @ Feb 1st 2007 11:39AM
I am waiting on a price drop. Still mulling over just getting an 8800GTX for the same price.
Jeff Hagen @ Feb 1st 2007 2:33PM
I don't price is the biggest issue right now, it's the fact that it only has one good game and has another month or two until there're any more. With 20 worthwhile games it might be worth the cash, but with only one...
Jimbo @ Feb 7th 2007 8:28PM
I can't believe anyone working for Sony would bring up price cuts. It's sort of crazy how often these execs misspeak. Tiuk, Canadian stores raised prices because of your weak currency. I would say that the PSP would get a price cut before the PS3. Then again, now that the cell processor is already down to 65nm a price cut could be more feasible.
