Just in cased you missed the cultural institution that is Super Bowl commercial watching (wait, there's a football game in there somewhere?), this year produced a couple definite must-sees for the Engadget nerderati. Our personal fav was Garmin's Garmin Man vs. Maposaurus Ultraman homage, although Sprints connectile dysfunction faux-infomercial wasn't too bad either. Check out the videos after the break.

Bleh. The Super Bowl is about the game, not the commercials. Super bowl commercials are only for women and people who don't know anything about football. Plus, by publicizing commercials, you're being nothing but a corporate pawn, doing their job for free. Having so many commericials to begin with is obnoxious enough, so I saw screw em...let them do their own advertising.
Blake W @ Feb 5th 2007 4:42PM
um... it might be just me but, this website is pretty much a merchandise advertising website for the latest gadgets. and i don't think they're getting kickbacks from all the people they advertise for. Even though thats not a bad thing, you pretty much just categorized all of us into "women and people who don't know anything about football."
Arcygenical @ Feb 5th 2007 4:04PM
Or people that don't care about football :p
Lisa H @ Feb 5th 2007 5:26PM
'super bowl commercials are only for women' - wtf? Women can't like sports? Women can't like gadgets? Take your misogynistic, pig brain and shove it up your not-getting-any-ass.
Chris @ Feb 5th 2007 6:39PM
Don't you folks realize? "THE SUPER BOWL", and football in general, is all that life was created for. First, THE SUPER BOWL created light, then the planet, then the sea and the land, and finally, created people to play with, and to annoy with commercial breaks. THE SUPER BOWL is both caring and loving, but remember, THE SUPER BOWL is not a tame lion. THE SUPER BOWL can and will smite you.

Scabies @ Feb 5th 2007 3:55PM
I agree, the evil mapasaurus commercial was great. Same with the depressed GM assembly robot.
for all you anti-social ubernerds, most of the commercials can also be found at http://bulletin.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=bulletin.read&messageID=2712046470&Mytoken=99199666-7932-421F-99255479442729F21952209
they use the myspace video flash player.
akintz @ Feb 5th 2007 4:05PM
Superbowl commercials are also for the people who don't care about the winner or loser - whether they know something about football or not. And thankfully there were some entertaining ones (I happen to like the robot arm one). And their entertainment value far outweighs their advertising value, IMO. So that is at least a little publicity-worthy. Who cares if people buy the stuff or not...
MikeTLive @ Feb 5th 2007 4:17PM
that powerrangers/ultraman crap commercial had me saying - What the He-double-hockey-stix?
who is the idiot who OK'd that?
-- I had successfully forgotten about it as quickly as it had begun.
until now.
thanks for nothing.
Wonderboy @ Feb 5th 2007 4:20PM
I hated that Garmin commercial, thought it was lame beyond all reason. The GM and Sprint ones were funny though. Nothing terribly memorable this year, a few good laughs but nothing we'll be talking about next year ("Remember that ... commercial?").
Wonderboy @ Feb 5th 2007 4:22PM
So there are people who still like Prince huh? The whole time I was watching thinking how crappy it all was (but too lazy to go do something else since the food was right next to me), I was wondering if someone out there was enjoying it. Glad at least one person out there did... This marks I don't know how many Half-Time shows in a row that were just horrid.
glacia @ Feb 5th 2007 4:25PM
"The Super Bowl is about the game" Oh, did that happen again? If not for the reposting of the commercials I would be happily unaware that the superbowl existed. I'm just not into events where sweaty guys chase and rub each other. Not that I care much about the commercials.

Funny how the rest of the media called the Garmin ad one of the misses.
mrgray @ Feb 5th 2007 6:55PM
Looks like Garmin nailed their target audience on the head. If the techies liked it they're set, doesn't matter if the rest of the world thought it sucked!
TS @ Feb 5th 2007 4:41PM
On Commercials:
I thought the Garmin ad was great. I got a good chuckle out of it. Now perhaps I just gravitate to the completely random, but I liked it. It was my fave commercial.
On Prince/halftime show: I can't say I listen to Prince much (hardly at all really), but compared to all of the lip-syncing crap they normally have, I thought it was excellent. He did a good job, and well, he was actually singing.
ChrisXS @ Feb 5th 2007 4:56PM
I liked the Coke commercial that mocked Grand Theft Auto.
happythoughts @ Feb 5th 2007 5:17PM
Actually the GTA style Coke commercial wasn't even a Super Bowl exlusive. It's been playing in movie theater previews and occasionally on tv for quite a few weeks.
I don't understand all this attention for the super bowl commercials anymore. In the past there have been some pretty funny/over-the-top ones, but now it just seems like the advertisers are just riding on the hype without actually delivering anything worth watching. But hey, its their bazillion dollars a second for commercials nobody will remember, not mine.
ndisi08 @ Feb 5th 2007 5:02PM
Sorry guys but Prince was god awful. One of the worst halftime performances in quite awhile.
Especially when they put the curtain up and he went from a low fret to a high fret a couple times. It looked like he was doing something he shouldn't have been.
Anthony @ Feb 5th 2007 5:09PM
Wow. I would rephrase "Reality Check"'s comments. "and people who don't [care] anything about football".
So the commercials are for me. & Prince. I definitely tuned in to see him. Pretty good performance too- & in the rain to boot!
Farris @ Feb 5th 2007 7:09PM
Anthony, I didn't catch the performance, but was the rain Purple by chance?
[/Prince song reference]
fashionista @ Feb 5th 2007 5:19PM
Prince rocked. That guy knows how to put on a show. And Garmin Man was the best commercial I have ever seen.
And this Reality Check clown needs to go to NFL.com and leave the nerds alone.
Ryan Block @ Feb 5th 2007 10:46PM
Damn straight!
Karl @ Feb 5th 2007 5:40PM
Ugh, that Garmin commercial was just abysmal. The whole time I was watching it I was imagining the Justin Long "I'm a Mac" type guys who created it sitting around congratulating themselves on how hip and clever they are. Those hipper-than thou pop culture style ads are so played out. Enough already!
Rodrigo DeJuana @ Feb 5th 2007 5:45PM
My first thought after i saw the garmin commericial was that he was defeated the map monster was "hey, he's peeing on him!"
xiath @ Feb 5th 2007 9:30PM
Farris, it was raining, he had a purple guitar, and it was the song Purple rain.
nikster @ Feb 5th 2007 10:40PM
Wow thats the best the superbowl ads had to offer this year? Lame.
Garmin was nice for those of us who love Ultraman and cheesy Japanese monster flicks and the rock band.
The others? Boring. Trying to be funny but not.

if you wanna see something really funny i made the comercial spec for the gmc comercial a few months ago before it even came out and its so bad its awesome check it out http://www.radicaldunce.com/comments.php?y=06&m=09&entry=entry060919-223558

Kudos, man. Awesome commercial.

My dad works for Garmin so the Garmin commercial was my favorite. You can see the full version at http://champion.garmin.com/ Sprint's "Connectile Dysfunction" one was also really funny.
