Bizarre PSP mod adds a cooling fan, utility in question
The overheating syndrome has struck just about every area of consumer electronics possible, and while spinning that UMD might get your fingertips ever-so-toasty, we haven't heard any mass outcries of PSPs getting hot enough to cook breakfast on, but apparently none of that matters. In a rare case of besting an already questionable mod just days ago, this DIY installation is a real head scratcher, as Acidmods details how to install an actual cooling fan onto the rear of your Sony handheld. Your guess is as good as ours as to why this hack-job is actually beneifical, but if your only alternative is obliterating your PSP with a sword, we guess we'll have to recommend you hop on over and get your hot gluing on -- but only after you've mastered the art of stuffing three AAA cells into its battery pack, cool?[Via Joystiq]

What a great way to blow dust into the UMD drive.

I thought this was a photo of an old Pii heatsink for a sec.

This device does make sense if your desire is to draw power from the PSP to power the fan in order to cool yourself down on those hot summer days. I sure will step off the bus if I see one of those guys (THE INVENTORS!) approaching!

I'd bet that the intention is to blow air across your hands to reduce sweaty palms.

Ever accidentally touched a running PC fan? This is a genius way to do it, and trust me, it hurts.

That fan spins in the less painful direction.

Huh? The PSP doesn't get hot at all, even after several hours. There's a small amount of heat coming from the memory stick slot and sometimes the battery, but you won't notice it if you're playing it and holding it normally. This is just a great way to ruin a $200 device. And, like humpty said, to get dust in the UMD. On the off chance anyone out there is considering actually doing this... don't.

I think that it takes away from the overall sleekness of the unit. However, if you're looking to have a conversational piece that would have you swamped with the same repetitive comments and questions, go ahead with the mod and have your friends annoy you.

when is the psp going to get a high resolution screen? its the same res as the ipod video (which looks GREAT) and its like 3x the size. whats up with that? please tell me. seriously tell me if you know.
matt @ Feb 9th 2007 11:35PM
psp resolution is 480x272, whereas the ipod is 320x240 (5 and 5.5g).
ipod: 2.4 inches diagonal, psp: 4.3 inches diagonal widescreen. the psp screen is approximately the size of an ipod... so you could say it's almost three times the size, but definitely not the same resolution. i believe their dpi is very similar though, i was watching an ipod-formatted movie on my psp screen and in the 'original size' setting it was pretty close to what I would see on an ipod, except maybe just a little bit smaller.
