Samsung outdoes itself with Ultra Smart F700
Eek! Must restore... cardiac function... ahh, there we go. Samsung's Ultra Editions seem to get classier, glossier, and more far-fetched with every subsequent iteration -- and if they haven't already jumped the shark, they have now with the rather breathtaking Ultra Smart F700. The candybar with a slide-out QWERTY 'board makes do with 7.2Mbps (yes, we said "seven point two") HSDPA plus EDGE for those occasions when 3G towers are out of reach, a 2.78 inch touchscreen sporting no fewer than 440 x 240 pixels, microSD expansion, full HTML browsing, Bluetooth, and a whopping 5 megapixels of snapping power on the backside. Per protocol, America is left squarely out of the equation with GSM 850 and WCDMA 850 / 1900 all coming up missing, but at least folks in the greater Barcelona area should get a shot at it next week when it bows all official-like at 3GSM.

Does anyone know if this phone is going to be released in Thailand and when? Been going crazy looking for one............
The slide out keyboard, 5mp camera, and hsdps are good but all that technology makes it too bulky, plus it dosent even compare in terms of looks with the iPhone, the menus and music player look no way near as nice as on the iPhone, and the browser would have to be amazing to beat the frankly awesome safari on the iPhone, the pinch thing is so useful and makes browsing easy
is this phone out in the uk yet ? if so where can i find it !!
Oh.Wow.
take THAT, apple fanboys!
It's too fat: half as thick again as the iPhone. Is that an F700 in your pocket or have you just grown a breast? Back to the drawing board girls, iPhone still rules.
LG
iPhone what?
Apple re-invents the phone?
sure, sure, just because the iPhone was announced first, everyone else is copying the iPhone, right?
don't think so...
poor brainwashed fanboys, i mean, steve's army.. lol
That is sex0r right thur!!!!
Can someone explain to me why America doesn't get the more badass phones like this one, or the new Sony Ericsson w880(plus countless others)? It hurts. Tell me why.
It's payback for the fact America gets the iPhone 6 months prior to everyone else although we're all looking at that as a bug fixing session before Apple update the firmware and send it out to the rest of us. We know there's enough Apple fanboys out there who'll be all too keen on doing lots of bug spotting for apple whilst I have to put up with using an N95 or possibly now one of these babies!
oh please!you in the States get everything else first and often better models,PS3 for instance. In Europe we pay through the back teeth for mobiles(cell phones to you).I was rather pleased though the States got the iphone first it saved me paying good money for junk
That might even get me to give up my treo, Keyboard, Touchscreen, no apple logo...
They should've just called it the "Ultra FU-iPhone"
R.I.P. iPhone.
"and a whopping 5 megapixels of snapping power on the backside."
Looks as if its in the front, right above the top right of the screen.
That's a luminosity/proximity sensor
Actually you'll probably find it's the " view me" camera for Video calling
Holy shit, this really kills enthusiasm for the iPhone.
Apple already needs an iPhone 2.0 to compete with this and other stuff annoucned at 3GSM.
Does this have
Wi-Fi?
GPS?
Decent onboard storage?
WM 6 for Skype and such?
Regardless, I'd move to Europe for this phone.
beauty!
Holy Crap! This makes the iphone 'craptastic" and looking so "dated". But to be honest, this phone will not sell much in the US because it's triband. But it will be a seller in Europe, Asia and the rest of the world.
Yup Samsung just had to show apple that they are KING in the mobile phone industry...
Pretty good thing this iPhone killer, especially for pricedrops that is.. :D
w00t. where do I sign...

This is a 3G phone so I'll bet there are 2 cameras, one on the front for video calling, and the big 5MP one on the back.
why are you people obsessed with apple? find something healthy to hate and then get therapy.
and i'm sure your predictions will have all the accuracy of a Bill Gates vision: 'cos you know he always gets it right. Right?
keep hating
waddo
@ keith waddington : "why are you people obsessed with apple?"
That's funny coming from someone who's lame website has a huge "made on an Apple" image at the bottom.
...and yes, your site still sucks, but at least you don't spam it on Engadget anymore.
iPwned. that is comcastic!
Actually it's the fact that the US is something like less than 10% of the market
Yeah, "one of these babies!" which will have just as many bugs.
The phone - with touchscreen covering completely its top - was in Sci-Fi for very long time. One of recent examples, is mobile phone from RahXephon animation: slim, long, black, with touchscreen covering one side completely. With such large screen, one can comfortably have top of your address book displayed, thus lessening need for keyboard. And so on.
iPhone or whatever are just taking an obvious evolutionary ways, allowed by modern technology. One five years ago, touch-screens were thick and heavy. Modern materials allowed them to be slim - and embeddable into all kind of devices. Touch-screen based keyboard is ultimate dream of any geek, but technology isn't yet advanced enough to make touchscreens that large.
You know... I just wish Apple would get competition like this in the PC or mp3 player market. It would be like MS suddenly getting their heads out of their a**es and making something that actually kicks butt instead of the craptastic disappointment that is Vista. Or Creative actually producing something that doesn't look like grandpa's DAP.
But here - Apple intros iPhone, Samsung releases something at least equally cool, and in some respects better (3G!). Hell, yeah!
I will probably still go iPhone but definitely not before playing with this bad boy. Looks are iPhone-killer-worthy but if history is anything to go by Sammys user interface / software department is the beast to the hardware department's beauty.
Let's see what Nokia is going to do. As of this posting, they have nothing to compete with this.
>> You know... I just wish Apple would get competition like this in the PC or mp3 player market.
Reading up on other sites, this has the VibeTonz feature which lets the user feel the buttons on the touchscreen. When you press the screen it vibrates slightly which gives the screen some 'tactile' feedback.
Even though i'm based in the UK I think it's a shame Samsung couldn't get this to market in the US at the same time as the rest, would be interesting to see the iPhone has some stiff competition straight from the getgo.
Somehow the iPhone seems like an over priced, over rated, low spec, big phone. Oh, it always was.
Unlucky America, seems like you'll always be behind in mobile phone technology.
I fail to see how this is an Iphone Killer?! I mean it looks like an HTC killer if anything or at least on par with it. Not sure if thats a proprietary OS, or if its a flavor of Windows Mobile, but this looks just like HTC apache/etc etc... unless this thing is thin, or has a solid state large capacity HD, or something new to bring to the table, then its just Samsungs version of the cingular 8125/8150 w/HSDPA... and that don't mean squat.
you are quite stupid, are ya?
it did state that it uses Windows mobile 6, ya heard?
this unit is actually the BlackJack2. I have the original BlackJack, and that itself could kick Steve Jobs in the A$$. The BlackJack2? It's way, way over the Iphone.
It's the interface that makes the iPhone special (at least to my mind), not the specs or look of the thing. I wouldn't brand this an iPhone killer until I see it in action -- the screens shown here are not at all promising.
On the other hand, it's about damn time the rest of the world got something first. I'm still waiting for xbox 360 content, iTunes movies and it looks like a really long wait for the iPhone too...
As far a s competition for the HTC, you are totally missing the fact that it has a 5MP camera with autofocus, etc! Hello, that blows away both the iPhone and the HTC and everythign else. It is the first QWERTY phone with a camera over 2mp. This is the ultimate mobile photo blogers tool that I have been waiting for. If only had 850/1900.
http://www.ThePortableLife.com
Actually you are wrong, what about the kaiser/TyTN II/Vario III/Stellar? 3 MP
Still less, but better.
That wasn't out yet when I made the comment nearly a year ago.
wow a single button-i wonder where they got that idea?
well it looks oretty good but i still would get an iphone for 8gb and the cool factor ( or n95!)
A 5 megapixel camera doesn't mean anything if it still takes crappy pictures. Since when has the # of megapixels meant anything. If it is a good lens, then it will be sweet.
And this whole whiney iPhone comparison is sooo 1996.
"If it is a good lens, then it will be sweet."
Second that! I was seriously interested in the N93 until I saw the sample pics. I'd buy a phone like that so I don't always have to keep my digicams or my camcorder with me to document when kid A or kid B do something cute/funny/silly/adorable.
Cameras and cellphones are a very natural convergence -- both share need for processing power, an LCD screen and rechargeable batteries.
If someone got smart and put a cell-phone inside a consumer point-n-shoot digicam (4-5mp), like Samsung seemed to be doing a while back (5, 7mp cam-phones with zoom, where are they now?), I'd buy it, bulky and all. The price *should* be less than each gadget by itself, since many components are shared -- A relatively small 6mp Canon (SD600) is only $220 retail now, a decent phone is $150... so the package could be had for
I fail to see how this "jumps the shark".
I have never gasped when I saw a phone (not even the iPhone). This one made me gasp. WOW. I WANT one.
What's the chance (slim to none I suppose) that Verizon would pick it up.
I Want This Phone!
Actually, PhoneArena says it should release on Verizon. Praise the lord!!!
(was supposed to be:)
" You know... I just wish Apple would get competition like this in the PC or mp3 player market. "
Where have you been? Dozens of mp3 players better/cheaper than iPod. And if you're looking at pure hardware, Apple doesn't even come close to a PC when it comes to value. Of course, Steve's Army will tell you about how their little Macs can "do everything out of the box" while you need to buy software for your PC. However, anyone with half a clue will be quick to realize that what comes with a Mac is *very* basic and to pursue anything seriously, you'll need to plunk down some money -- even for many things that can be had as Freeware or inexpensive Shareware on PCs. And once you consider the significant price-difference in the hardware, a couple of $100 software packages will still have PCs come out on top.
I was talking about hardware design.
There's Apple... then there's nothing for a long time, then a little more nothing, then Sony... Asus, and lately HP, and then the rest of the ugly family.
Same thing in mp3 player market, the best anyone can come up with is something that doesn't hurt your eyes when you look at it but nowhere near the refinement of the iPod. Even the 1st gen iPod, now 5 years old, looks better than any non-iPod out there.
Like I said before, I wish it were different. At least in the mobile market it looks like they are getting some stiff competition, and I am glad for that. I didn't mention the N95 - the N95 is cool but can't compete in the looks dept. The entire N-series design is bland and boring. I have an N73, for the record.
I hope this device can have an integrated GPS and possibly Windows Mobile 6 (x-fingers that it won't freeze as much...) and I will be a happy camper. Although, packing in Wi-Fi (for free internet use at home or anywhere where the service is free)will add more benefit! and yeah...like many hae mentioned...should be quad-band.....lol...asking too much??
Would this phone be considered a smartphone or pdaphone? That really doesn't look like WM5 or WM6. Is that a Samsung "OS" or something else?
There are some inconsistencies with the photos on the link. The calendar says its the 29th but the clock says its the 12th. Also, I don't think its possible for it to be Saturday in NY and Friday in Berlin. Earth doesn't spin that direction.
the calender could have a a different day selected, i.e. for adding appointments...
Incredible specs! 7.2 Mpbs would never happen in the US though (even if it worked on our towers) What's the fastest now? A click over 3?
Oh Korea..... why can't you sell more of your stuff here? I promise to eat lots of kimchi if you send me one.
and 3Mbps is all it offers and not 5Mgp camera but 3 storage is just under 4Gbps
When will Samsung realize that their oversized logo make they really good designs look ugly! Whats wrong with them?! Do they need to make sure you know that there's a Sammy phone in your hand?
I'm so f-ing sick of phones lacking US bands. Why can't these manuafactures include 850/1900 for phone and data??? I'm just gonna pick up and move to the other side of the globe pretty soon. Also what OS is this thing running, it looks like something totally new?
OK, let's be honest, this phone seems to have better specs than the iPhone, no question. However, it seems that the user interface (or rather, the user experience) is inferior, although one cannot judge until after having tried both phones. User experience is key. Lastly, the Samsung is beautiful but the iPhone is even more so, at least in my opinion. And I think more moving parts (keys, slider, etc.) means faster wear and tear. So I am still looking to get the iPhone (while crossing my fingers that they will upgrade the specs before launch), but I am glad that Samsung is gonna give them worthy competition. Even Apple fanboys should be, as it will mean better iPhones sooner. There is no question that Apple is a newcomer in the mobile phone industry, while Samsung is a heavyweight. But Apple just wants 1% of the market to be happy... at least for now.
Now that might be worth $600
All I see in this thread is a whole lot of "Apple / iPhone suX!!11"
I will still be getting the iphone. Not because I am an Apple lover by any means. As pretty as this Samsung is, by the time it's actually released (or a similar product) in the US, my iPhone contract will already be expired.
It kind of sucks where technology is at right now in phones. We're just getting to the point where having a converged phone / camera / high speed internet is functional and pocketable at the same time, but the only things we get in America are just tastes of what the devices should be.
Beautiful phone! I predict we will see a US version of this phone, as soon as AT&T actually builds a 3G network.
As for Apple, I am pretty sure they already know they can't sell the iPhone in Europe without 3G. Why do you think the European release is delayed?
iphone or not call me when the $@ing pocket pc/ smartphone industry actually starts putting some memory in these things!!!!!! Man that pissed me off! OUT!
huh, you can get a 2GB SD card for like $25, what's the problem.
as an apple fanboi i want to thank samsung for providing a worthy competitor.
look at what apple has brought out over the years without having the competition even showing in the rear view mirror - then imagine what they can do when somebody sets fire to their ass.
thanks sammy!!
is it just me or does this keyboard have the exact same look as the MacBook keyboard?
Speaking as someone who likes the design of the iPhone. I like this as well. It's not an either-or proposition. It's good that there's competition and it's unfortunate this phone isn't currently designed for US markets. However, I seem to remember something about Apple having partnered with Samsung on some of the key technologies involved.
If that is the case, then there's the reason this phone isn't making it to the US. There'd be a noncompete agreement in place that protects both Apple and Samsung from cannibalizing their own joint product.
One thing that might emerge is the addition of the hideaway keyboard on the iPhone, but I'd really like to see how the iPhone's multitouch interface does first.
Again, they both appear to have really solid industrial design and it'd be great to have both products competing in the same market to push more innovation both ways, but again that doesn't seem likely if Samsung is indeed a vendor for some of the iPhone internals.
However, it's likely another manufacturer will produce a similar competing product and I, for one, welcome it. It pushes continuous improvement on all fronts.
VibeTonz feedback on the touchscreen.Too bad Mr. RDF didn`t think of that one.A choice of touchscreen or QWERTY keyboard and 5 megapixel camera for video calls and HSDPA !iPhone isn`t even on the market and Sammy already knocked Apple out. Apple needs to get an iLife really bad.
Brilliant... Black MacBook + iPhone - OS X - Media capabilities = Samsung
Peep those keys ... that's the attention to Cupert--er, design I like to see!
triband + 2.1Ghz = Not making Cingular Customers Happy.
What's the OS? No site seems to have gotten/noted that detail.
The link says something about a flash-based OS? Some of the pics look a little Ubuntu-ish to me.
It has been said that this device will not use the new WM6. Does that mean it won't be Windows Mobile at all, or just that they won't use WM6 yet? If not, what will it use? Is Samsung coming up with their own OS, or will they use another company's OS, such as Access (nee Palm), Symbian or maybe even Maemo (Nokia's internet tablet OS)?
Nice looking device. Too bad the software will most likely suck @ass. I hope I'm wrong, because lord knows it would be a breath of fresh air if someone other than Apple could put out some decent mobile software.
I'll be getting an iPhone for sure, since I have a Mac, and there's no way in hell any other phone will ever integrate as well with Mac OS X as the iPhone will.
As for all you Apple haters, get over your Apple envy. It's really quite pathetic. It amazes me how people can be so negative towards a company that is constantly raising the bar for competition in the consumer electronics market.
if by raising the bar you mean looking pretty and thats about it, then yeah youre right.
this is sex with buttons.
it mostly frustrates me though because it wont be available in the states. i just think that Samsung should offer it here(U.S.), where it will get exceptional business with it. preferrably with Cingular.
Price?
I want to buy this, but I am on a budget somewhat. I don't want to spend more than 300 Euros, even less with a contract, so what's the deal people?
Any know, even an estimate would be fne, never been seriously into mobile phones, but now that I can afford it I want one that does what I want.
If something "jumps the shark" that usually isn't a compliment, that means it's on a downhill spiral because it's past its prime. This wasn't used correctly. :)
I think u may have something there with the Ubuntu Linux reference. The background looks eerily similar to that on the default ubuntu wall papers
OpenMoko is the future of the smart phone.
Move along. Nothing but stinkin' closed source software here.
Samsung re-invents the iphone
haa
I would imagine we don't get these new "snazzy" phones because of the high cost and/or extremely long waiting period for FCC approval. As you may know, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) was created as the successor to the FRC (Federal Radio Commission) by the Communications Act of 1934. Thus, extending regulating duties to include testing and certification of consumer electronics regarding radio spectrum licensing and interference. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan relaxed a great deal of the FCC's restrictions and deregulating a large portion of the radio spectrum for licensing. Now, the FCC begins to shift from being a regulating body to becoming more of a revenue generator for the Federal Government. The fees for FCC approval are downright expensive in comparing to many other nations (if they have them at all.) Many companies find the fees to be too costly. It's much more profitable to just get FCC approval on a handful of market-proven models. Unfortunately, we cell enthusiasts get boned in the process while "Johnny American" thinks he's the bomb because he got the new MOTOKRAZR. Bravo, FCC... seriously, bravo!
Note: I do not have any inside knowledge or definitive evidence to support some of my claims. This is just my subjective opinion on the topic.
Ha! It amazes me when people jump the gun about a new phone and claim it is an iPhone killer even though there hasn't been ANY demo of how effective the interface is. The BIGGEST feature of the iPhone is not the touchscreen, not the direct e-mail access feature, not the fact that it has a built-in iPod......but the fact that the interface is so streamlined and simple to use that you can get to any feature of the phone in a flash. Also, does this new Samsung have a multi-touch screen or a true HTML browser? Or is still using the same ol' watered-down mobile browser that the rest of the industry is using? It's easy to jump all over the iPhone and claim that any new interesting looking phone that is released is gonna blow away the iPhone, but the truth is we do not know ANYTHING about how this phone's interface works. That has always been a huge selling point for Apple products. 3G? True. That's an advantage. But even Jobs said at the keynote that they are currently working on a 3G version of the iPhone as we speak.
It would appear to me that the majority (but but not all) of the posters in this comments section are suffering from anti-Apple fanboyism. I agree that this phone looks interesting, but if someone held out this Samsung and an iPhone, I know which one I'd grab to look at.
Hahahah.. nice. Food for Apple-envy-filled haters. Enjoy.
But the iPhone still kicks this Samsung's butt in UI design, iTunes synchronization, multi-touch (=gestures) screen, WiFi, random access to voice mail, size, motion sensors, integration with Google & Yahoo, and most likely prize (yeah, I bet most of the folks cheering for this new phone can't even afford the iPhone to begin with).
Just thank Apple for putting some pressure on the competition, and while you're at it open a savings account if you want to get this Samsung and move to Europe or Asia, where you could actually use it.
Price? Err ... a similarly functioned phone form HTC or any of Samsung's other smartphones are at least $100 to $200 less than the iPhone (based on Cingular's prices). I doubt this will be pricier than the iPhone. Come to think of it, Apple's hardware is almost always more expensive. You might think it's worth it, but it's not cheap.
I hope this sucker pushes Apple to include 3G and expandable memory in the iPhone though. Optional qwerty would be nice too.
what is it???????? phone or?
So, it's a black, touchscreen phone. So what? Until you've actually used it... shut the hell up! No one cares. And that goes for the iPhone too.
wow the best phone of 2007! me want this so bad!!
nikster, you must be on crack cocaine.
you are telling me that the Samsung YP-T9B doesnt look more attractive than the shitty ipods?
appearance is one thing, ipod, without FM radio, no bluetooth connectivity, required use of shit tunes, you must be either on crack or must be a little boy who is happy to own an ipod and show it off to your friends..
*Steve's ARMY need higher education*
My whole take on this thing...
It's a nice phone but why are so many site saying different things regarding its feature like EDGE and GSM triband (friendly with Cingular or T-Mobile?) and other connections?
My assumption for Samsung making it almost similar to an iPhone look is that, they are the one making the video and application processor for the iPhones so why not! They're too busy getting the name anyway from Cisco so they'll go on ahead and make something and see if they'll sue them too.
that is the coolest interface for volume/track control i have ever seen. they should patent that quick.
Wow.... I'm an Apple fanboy and I even like this. If it has wifi I'm so not buying an iPhone. I don't care if I have to carry my iPod with it because of it's insanely bad music player or not syncing with iTunes (if it has either characteristic, of course). The combination of the Qwerty keyboard, 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 5 Megapixel camera just make this phone irresistible. I just hope the price point isn't too high.
It kould b beautiful and useful,... but my experience with SAMSUNG (v200), was expensive, bad reception and weak piece of work. In fact -"my first cell phone broken (the color display) bran New"- . Hope this one be better!
Now I 've use a Nokia (8801) better, (but they must improve its reception).
Because, before my 8801 I thought was the better one (Nokia) on the level.
The lack of GSM 850 makes me want to cry. This is so satisfying to see, especially having watched the MacWorld Keynote and hearing Steve saying that the iPhone was at least 5 years ahead of its competitors. With 3G and 5MP on this sucker, I'm sure Apple's cell phone market share in Asia is screwed. Samsung, you are my hero.
pick me to test pilot.......pleaseeeeeeee
No touch screen keyboard. Thats a bit backward.
Does this samsung f700 have aim and yahoo?? since i have sidekick 3 and i know sk3 is soo thick and i want thin one and i finally saw this samsung f700 and it is much nicer and but i dont see any aim and yahoo on this spec..
It runs a tweaked Windows Mobile. So if it doesn't come with yahoo or aim. you can, wait make sure the apple army isn't looking, INSTALL THE SOFTWARE YOU WANT ON IT. I'm with cingular in the states, and i'm checking to see if the lack of the 850MHz will be killer, (doubt is since its the origional band gsm phones started with) and if it isn't i'll make the people drool like i do with my ultra d900. The only problem with that is the price. But its so worth it imo.
-gegner
when does it come to iran?and how about its price?plz answer me.
Jumped the shark? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_the_shark) This phone seems to be getting pretty good attention..
Wow! iphone who? Damn the Europeans I want this phone now. Grrr.
this is sweet. i cant wait to get one pretty soon.
Samsungs F700 doesn't only have 3G and 5MP auto-focus cam and Touchscreen...
It has MicroSD Slot...and Samsung is producing 8GB high-speed-microSD, which they want to have in mainstream until 2010...
so the F700 could be comaptible with 16GB MicroSD...
Looks amazing!!
Does anyone know if it has Wi-Fi capabilities?
does this beauty have aol instant messaging?
