Nokia's E90 Communicator: first pics!
Check it QWERTY geeks, we've got a trio of clandestine snaps of Nokia's oft rumored, but never seen E90 communicator. As you can see from the pics, the E90 does indeed pack a dual-hinge allowing it to open like a 9500 or fold-up flat like the 9300. And while you're checkin' the cameraphone snaps, know this: according to our new best friend and source -- "Brando" -- it does indeed pump S60 at its core and boasts a solid 3.2 megapixel cam. But damn, you see that bigazz main display? Could that be the rumored 800 x 352 pixel resolution? We'll know soon enough -- 3GSM is next week where we're pretty sure this will see an official launch.
Update: A bit more detail: HSDPA (yes), GPS (no), quad-band GSM (yes), WiFi (of course), internal display (800 x 352), external display (240 x 320). Both screens support 16 million colors and all applications can run on either screen -- launch an app on the external display, open and continue working with a massive increase in pixel-estate.
[Thanks, Brando]

Haven't you heard buttons are so last year.
Looks nice, likin' the keyboard.
Xander @ Feb 9th 2007 5:36AM
How hard is it to take a good photo these days? If the guy has a Nokia E90 kicking around he's bound to have a phone with a good camera, or a even a digital camera. Even if they're covert photos, he had time to place it next to an E60, so he should have had time to take a good picture.
The E90 doesn't excite me though, it looks rather chunky.
Xander @ Feb 9th 2007 5:41AM
Sorry about the rant, and I meant E61.
manny @ Feb 9th 2007 6:02AM
OMG!@$#$#@ IT LOOKS...just like all the other ones...
Kowalskitg @ Feb 9th 2007 6:35AM
closed, it looks a fair amount like a larger version of my enV/vx9900, and it does pretty much the same thing when its open.
steve Johnson @ Feb 11th 2007 5:40PM
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRING!!!
Bring out the iPhone already! Why is anyone even TRYING to compete with the iPhone with jurassic tech like this?
Adrian @ Feb 9th 2007 7:26AM
I used to have one of the old, old ones. It was almost too big for my pocket and the keys were too small to type on properly, but i still loved it. I'd love this one too, from the pic, but from experience i don't think a mobile works for me. happy with my e50.
PEZ @ Feb 9th 2007 7:48AM
Sounds nice and all, but that design seems sort of archaic to me. Wow, did I even spell that right? Anyway, The hinge seems a bit malicious, but I guess Ill have to wait until I see clear pics that werent taken with a lousy camera between someones balls.
Snaq @ Feb 9th 2007 8:44AM
That guy is sooo gonna get busted. I mean you can see his clothes, shoes and the carpet. Since there probably aren't too many people who have acces like that it wont take long for Nokia to pinpoint the guy.
Nice to see these pictures, but the E90 really doesn't look special at all. Maybe some CEO white collar guy can appreciate it more than me :)
Stefan Constantinescu @ Feb 9th 2007 8:46AM
No GPS = let down
The design, from these pictures at least, is a bit too much bling for my taste. The E61 is a device I enjoy taking out of my pocket. Very corporate, very industrial.
This thing ... not so much.
Magnus @ Feb 9th 2007 9:51AM
Actually, the model I saw a few months back had a button on it called A-GPS.
I guess we will all find out on Monday!
Richard @ Feb 9th 2007 8:55AM
Wonder if that is a touch screen.
I think S60 will support a touch screen.
dkelly @ Feb 9th 2007 9:26AM
And it costs only $2000! I am always interested in these high end Nokia phones until I see the price and what can be had for much less from the competition.
fiddle245 @ Feb 9th 2007 11:10AM
Congrats on taking the Sh!ttiest photo of all time
Aktopshooter @ Feb 9th 2007 1:11PM
This is a dream come true. I hope they incorporated all of the features of the 9300 (my current phone). The 9300 had excellent battery life and one of the few flaws was the lack of a vibrate (tell me this thing has vibrate). Another flaw of the early models was the lack of support for series 80 software. Now that this thing is out and they state it will be sporting S60 (Thank God)!!!!!!!!! The communicator device is more my style and is exactly what I have been waiting on.... Not a massive laptop in your pocket such as the Athena!!! You can bet that this will be my next phone by all means.
fred @ Feb 9th 2007 1:16PM
Confirmed by people who have used/reviewed the pre-release versions:
- it DOES have real GPS, like the N95
- it vibrates (finally)
- no touch screen (communicators never have had touch-screens and have never really needed them)
- backlit keyboard (finally)
Kowalskitg: the LG vx9900 is hardly comparable: the external screen on the E90's the same as the internal screen on the vx9900; the internal on the E90 has 3.7x as many pixels; the E90's a smart phone (install your own proper applications, not Java); E90 has 3.6Mbit/s HSDPA download, video-calling, 128MB RAM, more flash, Wi-Fi, integrated VoIP etc. etc.
Iryna @ Aug 12th 2007 5:45PM
Hi, i just got nokia E90 and have some problem with taking a picture....I follow all the instructions, but it still doesnt take pics...is anyone knows if there is a trick to it or something....please let me know if u can help me!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Richard @ Feb 9th 2007 2:05PM
fred,
The PSION Series 5 had a touch screen. That's where all of this began.
Taz @ Feb 9th 2007 2:39PM
I sooooo miss my Psion 5. I've always hoped that Nokia would upgrade their communicator to touchscreen, and use the folding keyboard tech from Psion to improve the size of the layout.
Trouble is tho... I've been using a SE P900 for a couple of years now, and I have to say - as big a communicator fan as I am (I've had them all so far) - I prefer the interface on the SE.
Ypoknons @ Feb 9th 2007 2:07PM
The N95 has a touchscreen.
Richard @ Feb 9th 2007 2:27PM
Ypoknons
Yeah. The N95 has a touchscreen!? But no support for 3G in the US.
obd @ Feb 9th 2007 3:28PM
Nokia N95 does not have touchscreen, S60 does not even support touchscreen
k0a9 @ Feb 9th 2007 3:31PM
The touchscreen is an essential feature IMO for diagramming, ui navigation, etc. I don't think the N95 has a touch screen, nor this device. These devices always seem to be one feature short of perfect, which keeps me with my old SE T616 after my P800 bit the dust.
PanosM @ Feb 9th 2007 3:42PM
GPS yes...
Confirmed by a guy in My-Symbian!!!
Nice!!
Richard @ Feb 9th 2007 4:02PM
Yeah!
For those of us reminiscing about the Series 5...UIQ is, IMHO, much more what EPOC Release 5 would have been had it support for a radio set...event though UIQ (SE P800, P900, M600...) devices are a smaller format.
S60 is buttons only and sssllllloooooooooooow. Really slow.
Sebastian @ Feb 9th 2007 5:48PM
It looks as if the pics were taken during some sort of presentation of the phone.
But does it really lack GPS? I'm quite disappointed if it does, as that was one of the main new features I was interested in. :(
Otherwise it really sounds great, the GPS can ofcourse always be purchased later on.. But it would be really great to have it in it, like the N95.
GusRandall @ Feb 9th 2007 6:56PM
This could make me leave Sprint. Love the screen/keyboard. If only it was EVDO.
cmlewan @ Feb 9th 2007 9:45PM
Steve Johnsson above is a funny guy. iPhone? No 5 MP camera, no dvd like video recording, no FM radio, no video calls, no hsdpa, not even basic 3G (!), no GPS, no millions of colors screen, no tv out, no third party programs allowed (!!!). And it comes in nine months. In this thread we're discussing a modern mobile phone, the E90.
cmlewan @ Feb 9th 2007 9:49PM
Sorry, I didn't mean that I thought the E90 has a 5 MP camera. I compared with N95 above. Also, I don't know about FM radio, dvd like video recording and tv-out on E90.
Will @ Feb 9th 2007 11:04PM
Black tennis shoes with white socks and khaki pants.....ewwww.
Oh well no love for us Verizon customers. Looks pretty cool. It doesn't seem like the time is too far off when we can have a device that can always be connected to the tubes of the internet and deliver whatever data we want, and still be pocketable, and have good battery life.
(Except for Verizon customers who can access an unlimited amount of data, as long is it's less than 5GB per month.)
jroc @ Feb 10th 2007 7:15AM
Thought it was huge until I saw the E61 by it. Looks like a new phone renaissance is approaching and I can't wait!
randy @ Feb 12th 2007 10:28AM
Sorry, but the N95 does not have a touchscreen. I would like to know whether this phone will support 850 or 1900 HSDPA and not just the european 2100 band.
Jah @ Apr 9th 2007 12:49PM
So much disinformation:
- the N95 does not have a touch screen
- the Nokia 9500 is a wonderful Smartphone and easy to use and it does not need a touch screen so why should the E90
- no Commi has ever cost $2000! Expect the E90 not be much more than the 9500
- S60 slow? My Nokia 5500 is quick
- and I have 3 Psion 5s and I also have all the UIQ phones ever made by SE so I know all about touch screens
Steve @ Apr 14th 2007 7:25PM
According to Nokia's website, the N90 has integrated GPS.
abhi @ Jul 2nd 2007 5:07AM
iphone is a damn loser its un-necessarly being popularised by apple ..but e90 is a jewel in itself it boasts of superb ram and a ver sexy yet formal look !!!!!
rclasrosas @ Oct 5th 2007 5:07AM
