Possio introduces GRETA, the GSM fax / printer
Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to GRETA, your anachronistic device (with the anachronistic name) for today. As anyone who's ever actually done business in today's world knows, fax just hasn't freaking gone away. So why not do a little to bring it up to date, hm? GRETA's got a 50-foot roll of fax machine paper and an illuminated keyboard to make on the go paper-to-paper transmissions easy as possible. Faxes are sent via tri-band GSM in a 35 ounce, 11.4 x 5.9 x 2-inch housing that has its own independent, internal NiMH battery power supply. No word yet when she'll be hitting the streets or for how much.

Haha... I'd LOVE to be in a meeting full of Blackberries, only to pull out this.

This is great, I hate getting faxes while I'm out of town. How do I access a GSM network without a an additional cell subscription? And how to cell providers charge for faxes?
aonicc @ Feb 12th 2007 12:12AM
get a prepay plan. there's no economical way to use a monthly plan for this shit unless you're constantly receiving faxes

It's a shame that this won't work with most GSM providers around the world. In some countries it's impossible to get a GSM Data plan (different to GPRS), as the providers don't have a charging mechanism for it.
Otherwise, it'd just be easier to drop a GSM Data card into your laptop and fax with that.

If this had a scanner too, it would be perfect.
Jeremy @ Feb 12th 2007 12:56AM
Uh it has a built in scanner (would be kind of hard to send faxes without it). See that long slot near the front of the device with the white paper icon? (That's where the paper goes and where the scanner reads said paper)

Pretty nice.
Would be much cooler imo if it had bluetooth though. It already cut out the power cord and phone line, why require usb cable then?
Shmoe @ Feb 12th 2007 12:41AM
Roll, didn't those die in the early 90s? Yuck.
Jeremy @ Feb 12th 2007 12:51AM
This device would not require a "data" plan as it doesn't use the Internet. It's just faxing. (I.E. essentially just a specialized modem-to-modem phone call).

If you read my post correctly, you'd see I wasn't talking about 'GPRS'.
A GSM Data line would be required to send and receive faxes. You can't do it over a normal voice line. Trust me, I've been making GSM based devices for years.

I simply don't understand why no one like faxes anymore. If you simply need to send a few documents, and don't want to take the time to digitize them (outside of the fax itself), not to mention the fact that it's much easier when you have to fill out forms. I simply don't get it. I'm in the process of leasing a new car, and without a fax machine, the process would take a very long time, as I'm here in Gainesville, FL, and my dad, who's co-signing on the lease, is back home in Lexington, MA. Also, faxes are wonderful in the business world, as anyone who's ever worked in a warehouse knows how incredibly useful they are. Instead of taking down an order, with the inherent risk of error, one simply faxes the order and you get exactly what you ask for. Long live the facsimile machine!
