Motorola's MOTORIZR Z8: a Symbian "kick-slider" with HSDPA
What a difference a profile shot makes, eh? Say hello again, to Motorola's 3G MOTORIZR Z8 -- the first ever "kick slider" sporting a new form factor meant to more confortably fit the profile of your face. This pup packs a Symbian (yes, Symbian) OS and up to 3.6Mbps HSDPA data in a 15.3-mm thin form factor. It delivers a 1.4 x 2-inch, QVGA 16 million color display and 2 megapixel camera around back (VGA cam up front for video calls) with the ability to record in either MPEG-4 or 3gp (for MMS). It also sports 90MB of internal memory with MiroSD expansion to store even more pictures, video, or MP3 audio; A2DP stereo Bluetooth audio; and up to 5-hours of 3G talk time or up to 16 days standby. Again, no mention of such trivialities as the frequencies supported, but the BSkyB partnership is a pretty good hint that the UK and Europe will be first in line for the Z8 when it pops in April. More pics after the break.

I think this is the next Matrix-Phone, the style is realy fantastic.

This definitely isn't a new form factor: Nokia 8110, nicknamed "banana" was curvy like this back in the mid-90s: http://mobiguru.ru/phones/nokia/nokia_8110.html
It's not a "new" form factor because they've been selling curved (non-mobile) phones for 100 years...
It's UIQ 3.1, but I don't see a stylus. I thought Motorola totally abandoned Symbian.

UIQ supports phones without touchscreen also.
Looks very nice. Does Symbian OS mean something like Nokia's S60? I thought my Moto V3i (which I dumped for a Nokia 5500) was trash as far as OS went.
It's UIQ, like the high end SonyEricssons (including their latest Walkman branded model)
very cool
It's no surprise that I HATE the RZR line and don't care much for simple sliders, but this one actually breaks out of the tacky, flimsly, uselessly thin mold. I like the curve and the simple interface. This is the first Motorola phone I've liked in a very long time.
I'm on the same page as you CowboyGA. Phones got good specs and a nice design. I see it being a pretty big hit when it lands. Doubt sprint will land it.. Been with Sprint for 3 years and they either get passed by on the cool phones or get them a year later :( Just woke up no grammer police please.

Agree w/ CowboyGA. Correct me if I'm wrong but this phone seems to curve only when open- it lays straight when shut. If this is the case, then it's finally a good design from Moto.
Yes, the phone is straight (flat) when closed. It only curves when it's opened.
Moto sold their share in Symbian, but remained a UIQ licensee - expect to see more UIQ phones from Moto this year and next!
Interesting concept. About time moto did something new instead of milking the RAZR way past its shelf life.
I don't like Symbian much on my Nokia, but for Moto it will be a huge improvement ;)
First moto in a long while that I would even consider purchasing. The hardware has a solid look to it.
Wow, two guys saying they agree with me. Better be careful or my ego will get too big for Engadget. :)
Finally! I'll get me one of these.
Whats with all the cellphone news on Engadget lately. Isn't this stuff what they made the mobile site for. I mean there are well over a dozen cellphone posts on the first two pages alone. Am I Right
Keith - It's 3GSM this week, the biggest event in the mobile calender. It's the week when all of the big manufacturers and carriers announce their hot new products. Just like this hot one. :)
make that 3 CowboyGA =D I've hated RAZR and people who hawk them like they're hot shit. If moto likes this UI then they may become a possibility for my next phone
"tacky, flimsly, uselessly thin mold"
What? You must be joking! I love my RAZR V3. How is it tacky? I think it was the first mobile to hit just the right balance between all factors.
It is anything but flimsy. My Z3 has held up to two years of wear and tear just beautifully. I've dropped it more times that I can count.
Uselessly thin? How can thin be useless? That is what I love about it. I carry mine in my back pocket and I don't even know it is there. I hate phone that I have to carry on a belt clip. The thing about the Z3 is that is was the first mobile that I've had that I can carry comfortably.
Now, that all being said. My girlfriend does not like the Z3. She finds it too hard to fish out of her purse. She likes the thicker phones. So perhaps deciding factor is where one carries their phone. Men, like me, tend to carry it in a back pocket or belt clip. Women tend to carry it in a purse.
My girlfriend does like the look and feel of the newer Motorola model that is thicker than a Z3, but not as wide. I can't remember the name while sitting here. So that model is on her short list to replace her current phone next month when her contract expires.
Gotta love that Gnarles Barclay!
"gnarls barclay"?
It's "Gnarls Barkley"
Keith
Because that's what the Barcelona show is showing off right now.
JohnN
Why do you think they called it a "kick slider"?
Are you people really that slow or is it because its Monday?
the phone says the song playing is "Gnarls Barclay" , mlvassallo was just making fun of that.
..and by song thats playing, I mean artist of the song.
I'll take one. Let us know when pricing/carrier comes out, if it ever hits the States.
motorola should start copying SE or Nokia on button placement - how to easily switch between the center circle and the "ok" & "cancel" buttons is. The way they're placed on the V3 is pure crap and this phone looks no better.
that looks amazing. Im guessing that will be my next phone
New Motorola phones KRZR K3, RIZR Z8 soon to come....
I just read that puremobile will be carrying the new motorola phones.. thats crazy. I thought it was going to take really long. Has anyone read anything else about it? I found the news at yahoo:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/prweb/20070206/bs_prweb/prweb502352
Gnarls Barclay...Gnarles Barkley...does it matter?? Poo by any other name still smells like poo! (God loves bastards)
I want this super nice piece of work. NICE JOB Motorola as allmost allways!!! ;)
Cheers
MegaJoy
"ring ring ring ring bananaphone.." etc ;)
The fact that this has Symbian UIQ is a great thing for Moto. It will be alot easier for for cool apps to go on this phone.
Shame it's not touchscreen though. No handwriting recog.
But this has some of the fastest mobile connectivity ever. Bring. It. On.
FYI: Nokia mainly uses Symbian 'Series 60' - in fact they bought the 'Series 60' group. Also, Sony Ericsson use another flavour of Symbian called 'UIQ' (se P800. P900, P910 etc), which they now own too.
UIQ is usually used in touchscreen devices and has some of the best handwriting recog. on a handset I have ever tried. Beats Palms graffiti easily.
But Moto are not using this with a touchscreen device and therefore have stripped out the handwriting.
This has been one of the most secretive devices from Moto to date with the tightest of embargoes.
idk about this, if they really throw this phone to the peaple theres going to be a big demand, the faster they make it, the poorer the quality. like the razer, i see thows things brake all the time, do u think its better to get the phone when production of it is down? or buy in the cow rush idk i see this phone broken in my hands
I think this is the next Matrix-Phone, the style is realy fantastic. Thank you Motorola.
