Samsung's Ultra Smart F520: HSDPA touchscreen with dual-sliding action
Surely you remember Samsung's Ultra Smart F700 HSDPA QWERTY, right? Well, check their latest Ultra Smart, the F520. Just how smart is it? Well, to start with, it's a dual slider offering both a full QWERTY and numeric keypad depending upon your need. Next, it packs Bluetooth, a 3 megapixel camera with flash, and a 262k color, 3-inch, 480 x 272 touch-screen display. It brings pretty much all the audio and video format support you'll need and microSD to store your goods. It features a Flash UI with document viewer and full HTML browser all bundled in a sleek 104.8 x 53.7 x 17.4-mm piece of kit. It even features dedicated hot-launch keys for TV (DMB?), Internet and Music. Alas, it's only tri-band GSM / EDGE and 2100MHz HSDPA. Still, pretty smart when it arrives around September. How you like them apples, Apple?

Nice but those crude looking monochrome icons got to go!
My Atari Falcon had better looking icons. Plus I think having those keys with sideways printed texe would make me crazy...
Still a valiant effort Sammy.
Jonathan Keim @ Feb 12th 2007 1:09PM
ok. So you are going to make a purchasing decision based on icons?
BigD @ Feb 12th 2007 7:35PM
Why would you use the numeric keys (with the oddly oriented letters) for texting when you have full qwerty? The only time you'll need those little letters is if you dial a number like 1(800)TEH-SEXY.
DJDoc @ Feb 12th 2007 6:46PM
It needs WiFi and a way to run SKYPE.
Otherwise that phone is dead to me.
snowglyder @ Feb 12th 2007 1:18PM
Um... yeah that's hot.
gullum @ Feb 13th 2007 9:17PM
Ugh, that is such a rip off of Sony's XMB interface only after going through the ugly cycle.
Joe Henson @ Feb 12th 2007 4:11PM
I like the look of the new Samsung phones... and I love the icons.

I'm not sure what to think about the whole side-sliding keyboard trend. I don't really like it on my 8125. I mean, typing longer messages is nice once it's open, but it just sort of bugs me for most other reasons.
jerrt @ Feb 12th 2007 2:27PM
wow, those look like the icons and setup for a certain sony product.... [;
SubGenius @ Feb 12th 2007 3:04PM
Does it run OS X?
frac @ Feb 12th 2007 3:22PM
I believe it says Flash UI in the description . . . what part of that do you read as OS X? I despise Mac fanboys - your handle is quite appropriate.
Nick @ Feb 12th 2007 4:02PM
funny that you are ripping on him when you dont even understand his post... it was a response to the "How you like them apples, Apple?" at the end of the article.
I despise people who rip on others when they themselves cant seem to make sense of things.
MasterCKO @ Feb 12th 2007 5:21PM
wow, I really like this idea. I'm a huge fan of the sliding keyboard trend, but this dual slide design is ingenious. Too bad I'm with Sprint and don't plan on switching anytime soon. lalala.
frac @ Feb 12th 2007 7:54PM
Nick: Comments should be limited to the article to which they are affixed, especially when the article to which he is supposedly referring to is merely a link. Did you even check that link? It's in reference to a fake FCC notice regarding the iPhone. How could the question posed by "SubGenius" have anything to do with that article? Don't defend a fellow Mac fanboy just because he worships the same idol as you. It's his own fault that he can't be more specific as to which article his comment is pertaining to. Do some research before you speak or post. Maybe you can append "SubGenius" to your moniker as well?
By the way, unless you are referring to a brand of cigarettes, 'cool' is spelled with a 'c' not a 'k' you f$#%ing retard.
Nick @ Feb 12th 2007 4:08PM
ne ways.. id like to get my hands on one to see how comfortable it is to type on.. and im not too sure i dig the x and y axis bars to highlight... kool for maps and gps... not so kool for OS GUI
ERR @ Feb 12th 2007 4:10PM
i really like this. now the question is, when is it available? and how much?
v_dogg @ Feb 12th 2007 5:46PM
it looks sexy, but shouldnt the numbers be colored differently? it seems to blend in too much
B1gC72 @ Feb 12th 2007 5:24PM
wow, im sure Sony is flattered. XMB anyone?
nikster @ Feb 12th 2007 6:16PM
Dual sliding is cool but where's my US F700? Stop teasing us, Samsung! Where is it??
Ceralor @ Feb 12th 2007 6:30PM
Engadget, isn't there the iMobile section specifically for cellphones? I'm starting to get a bit tired of new cell launch entries being all there is on the page and my RSS feed.
Mike1756 @ Feb 13th 2007 1:54AM
@BigD: for one-handed sms typing e.g. (short ones of course) or dialing a manually entered number.
elam110 @ Feb 13th 2007 5:13PM
Frac, You are a prick.
I don't like Macs either, but keep your worthless opinions and bashing to yourself.
Pathetic @$$
rp @ Feb 15th 2007 8:53PM
@frac
I'm pretty sure SubGenius was making a joke when he said "Does it run OS X?" Lots of you somehow didn't understand that and went on to make asses of yourselves and somehow got a good ranking for it. I know sarcasm doesn't usually work very well on the net but c'mon people, act like you've been there, as Bob Elliot would say.
Dave Hunwick @ Feb 21st 2007 10:04AM
Face it all the new Phones are basically OK designs on top of WM5 or 6, basically the core is doo doo and the outside is mainly crap. Most of you are so dreading the coming of the iPhone cuz you KNOW you will want one and are trying your hardest to resist.
frac @ Feb 14th 2007 7:36PM
elam110: Why is it that you do not practice what you preach by keeping, "your worthless opinions and bashing to yourself" instead of being the most pathetic thing of all, a hypocrite.
Bring an intelligent response or stfu, loser.
skellious @ Feb 13th 2007 7:07PM
Looks like a PSP with a PDA keypad tacked on.
jg @ Feb 19th 2007 11:52AM
Frac, you really are an idiot. Whether macs are decent computers or not is completely irrelevant. The guy was kidding. His comment was the same as the "ya, but can it run doom" comments you see on strange computers. How would you feel if you got flamed for making a joke? Pretty shitty I'm guessing, so suck it up and stop being an ass.
Sam K @ Feb 15th 2007 4:25PM
480 x 272 resolution screen....very close to 16:9 aspect ratio. I think that was pretty smart of Samsung. Btw, 480 x 270 would be exactly 16:9.
Dax Desai @ Feb 19th 2007 11:05PM
I really love this trend. I think the form-factor is getting better for these phones. I'm not sure about the layout of the keys on this phone though. It seems like it might be downplaying the letters to enable dedicated number keys. I think Samsung is going to have some strong offerings by the time the iPhone comes out. Lack of a keyboard will be a killer for me.
frac @ Feb 19th 2007 12:38PM
rp & jg: If SubGenius was joking, he needs to work on his delivery. Why should I give him the benefit of the doubt? I've noticed that handle make retarded comments in other threads. With that evidence I can only presume he is as he does. He hasn't jumped in to clarify for us; further validation of my assertion. Why do you guys insist on defending some random jackass/comedian with poor delivery? Maybe a good flaming would encourage him to write his "jokes" a bit more clearly.
