Mmmm mm, guarana extract... nothing quite like it for doping kids via Mountain Dew MDX or Rockstar energy drink just to name a few of the more popular stimulant elixirs. Now a newcomer: the Headshot Gamer Bar. Oh yes it is, a candy bar with oomph for plenty of late night sniping fun. Fortunately, it's said to taste like toffee, not ape guano, and destined for retail at gaming centers across North America. You know -- someday, somewhere in the baggage room at Greyhound, some beat poet will scratch: "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by guarana, starving hysterical, naked, dragging themselves through the Vice City streets at dawn looking for an angry fix." Don't believe us? Click-on for the ingredients.
Glucose, Milk Chocolate Coating (sugar, fractionated palm kernel oil, milk powder, cocoa, cocoa processed with alkali, sorbitan tristearate (an emulsifier), Lecithin, and vanilla), Brown Rice Crisp (Rice Flour, Evaporated Cane Juice, Sea Salt, Malt Extract), Rolled Oats, Toffee Bits (Sugar, Butter, Almonds, Whole Milk, Cocoa Butter, Chocolate Liquor, Salt, Artificial Flavor, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavor), Dextrose, Dextrin Sugar, High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Natural & Artificial Flavor, Gum Acacia, Soy Lecithin (as emulsifier).
100mg of Guarana
What annoys me the most about this is that people are stupid enough to buy it. I know that we, as gamers, like to think we're more intelligent then others, but from experience, most gamers are gibbering idiots. Does this bar 'do' anything for you? It's caffeine. The caffeine you get from a Headshot bar is the same as you get in a Rockstar is the same you get in a Mountain Dew is the same you get from tea (in differing doses, but I digress). Now 'gaming' is a market ripe for brand-name association no matter what it is, the 'Abercrombie and Fitch' of LAN parties.
For example, look at Sound Blaster's "new" card, the 'Fatal1ty version' or whatever schlock it is. Is the card really that great? No, it's actually just a previous model with a few whiz-bang gadgets and polysyllabic words attached, and in reviews, it's actually a poor performer. However, Creative slaps a few hundred dollars on the card and markets it 'FOR GAMERS' because they KNOW people are stupid enough to buy into this crap.
I'd love to ask how low they think of us, that if you combine "energy", "natural", and "guarana anything" in a title you can sell it to gamers, but the depressing thing is that it actually works.
i don't drink energy drinks cant stand the taste but i do drink tea ice and hot its my lan drink of choice
Guarana is a classic Brazilian soft drink it really tastes good. It has no caffeine in it.
guarana is not inherently evil.
Guys, guys... it's food, not the appocalypse.
Personally, if it tastes good to me, I'll eat it. Within reason. Why does anyone care about how other people eat? Get over it, its their choice, and if they're stupid, it's their problem.
I wouldn't mind trying this, but it'll probably taste like ass.
Wonder if it will ever come out in fruitier flavors, ideally like skittles.
I really don't see caffiene as being horribly addictive. It can be with some people, but not absolutely everyone. Hell, I grew up as a caffiene junkie from a young age, but quit cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant. It's been about seven months and no big relapses or caffeine headaches.
I see this bar being sold down at the CPL and most likely Hot Topic and Gamestop. Probably for around $2.00 a bar.
I had the chance to try one of these bars a few weeks ago at Mission Control LGC, I have to tell you, THIS IS THE BEST I'VE HAD!
As for all the people who keep being douches - FINE MORE FOR ME!!!!
I'm just surprised that it doesn't contain "High Fructose Corn Syrup". That's the stuff that makes and keeps people fat.
Guarana is an alternate source for caffeine. The compound still exists in this berry.

I've been on caffeine for the better part of my life now. In fact, the drugs they prescribe for regulating an ADHD afflicted person are stimulants.
This is probably why I went to caffeine as a younger teenager. Caffeine can help you hyper-focus if you have ADHD. You're able to sit and work longer and concentrate better.
I think caffeine is a better alternative than dextroamphetamines and other such legal speed-like drugs.
I have Dexedrine prescribed for when I need to concentrate - but I don't use it. I have a cup of coffee at my favourite cafe and work.

It works.
Hah! Ean, you beat me to it!
This little bit of journalism is a tad frivolous. I really don't think Allen Ginsberg has anything at all to do with a guarana-laced meal replacement bar, nor did the poem need to be quoted to that extent to get whatever point was put forth across. Mr. Ricker just seems to be tooting his own horn here... we've all taken high school english classes too, man.
This is something that I will never understand. The US military tested everything from LSD to speed and legal uppers (like caffeine and guarana). They proved in combat a soldier is far less effective because his ability to concentrate is hindered and contrary to popular belief aiming a real weapon or using your mouse actually takes concentration not some magic twitch. In some cases, as i've played extensively a reflex shot can be helpful, more than a few times i've turned and corner and have gotten the lucky "twitch" reflex shot that kills people but in almost every other FPS situation or any other video game concentration is the key to victory. Those obnoxious bunny hopping matches are a very good example of such and all these stimulants while they allow you to stay awake longer will make your ability to succeed drop drastically.
Also, a large portion of what gamers perceive as effects are not effects at all but merely perception. Giving kids two cans of red bull will give them excess energy but give an adult two cans of red bull and he'll act out because its what he perceives as the right reaction. Caffeine affects only so much, getting hyperactive is something an adult shouldn't be receiving barring massive consumption of caffeine, along the lines of 10-12 cups of coffee or 4-5 bottles of mountain dew with an hour.
So I hoped I debunked a bit of the myths that gamers and the general populace run around with. Just avoid these food stuffs totally. I'd suggest things like Clif bars and such for their actual nutrition over this crud.
Uh, Nick... you new around here?

I stopped drinking soda (and eating most sweet things in general) and I have to say that I had no types of withdrawls or any of that crap. I actually woke up feeling great for the first few weeks. I hardly ever have headaches now. Go me!
in Australia (where i live) there was a short lived drink named "Hyper Cola". this drink put all other drinks to shame with usually one bottle easily able to power through a decent weekend skateboarding session. unfortunatly it had the unlisted side effect of causing random LSD flashbacks (for those of us old enough to have partaken in our youth) not every time mind you but in the few months the drink was on the shelves i would say that one in five times i experienced the unwanted side effects and i wasn't the only person reporting this effect. the drink didn't stay on the shelves for long... pitty...
I don't know how these bars taste but right now they are in the top ten gamer chow at http://www.gamerchow.com whatever that means.
