BRDGen creates PlayStation 3 disc images?
One of the chief copy protection mechanisms employed by Blu-ray discs that is unemployed by HD DVD is called ROM-Mark, which basically uses unique identifiers that can only be hard coded on discs by authorized duplicators -- in other words, it's that per-disc physical watermarking that makes copying (although not necessarily ripping) Blu-ray movies just that much harder, Which is partly why we're a little dubious about this new app, BRDGen, which claims to be able to make and edit (and export for recording) PlayStation 3 compliant disc images. Anyone with a Blu-ray recorder, PS3, and a healthy bit of patience care to see what this thing is capable of?

All this does is create a BD compliant disc, it doesnt magically make it play without a modchip, there is similar software for UMD called UMDGen and i beleive there was a PS2 one.
Well, since all copies will have the same rom-mark it would not be that hard to track the disc and find out who ripped it.
No, the ORIGINALS have ROM-Mark, the copies do not. So all the PS3 has to do is look for non-ROM-Marked discs, and ignore them (Except for, of course, non-PS3 data on 'em, I'm assuming)
What's the deal with Engadget with all this piracy news? Especially being that its misleading. PS3 images was ripped ages ago, it matters not if you can make images if you can't play the game.
Honestly, there are a million sites that cover this type of material(and cover it right). Actually tell you what's going on.
I'm a game collector/enthusiast who researches and takes advantage of every hack/exploit despite being 100% legit with my backups. I appreciate news like this from Engadget. I'm almost ready to start backing up my PS3 games and movies onto a 6 TB external array.
it appears this is for the creating ps3 game disk format compliant disk image NOT making 1 to 1 exact copy of game disks.
speaking of rom mark or whatever sony calls it is a form of securom, sony developed copy protection for pc afaik. by adding fairly precise variations within the specific of the disk format on the tracks, the rom-mask can check the signature from the physcial media which probably very difficult to duplicate.
i think this was added to protect specifically ps3 titles not movie titles
i think hd-dvd also employed extra in form of audio watermarks.
Castle, the reason it's posted here is because it's tech news and we like to read it.
As for the upcoming "doom for PS3" posts, take in mind two things: 1. This is more or less just the first step to being able to play copied games. 2. More might actually consider the massive cost for a PS3 to be worthwhile if they could play backed up games.
Granted, game pirates don't help the market directly (not buying much), but they often aren't hurting it, either. If they weren't planning on purchasing the products in the first place, the loss or gain is negligible, but the additional users praising the systems give support to marketing for future buyers.
I don't back anything up on my 360 - but I believe some degree of piracy (still under the guise of legit personal backups) could be eliminated if you at least replace a scratched game disc for a small fee! It's crazy that my games get ruined over time because the $65 worth of data comes on a 35-cent disc.
I sorta believe micro-soft and sony want us to mod our consoles thats why they leave holes open they just want to make a it seem harder so they can keep on the good side of game studios
but thats my bet because i know they watch the modding community looking for the next homebrew app to copy cat and implement in the next console
functions like video play back, and running operating systems yeah their watching
kinda like that time your friend stood back with the flashlight while you broke the window on that mercedes down the street
How about this...
'I sorta believe that the techies that actually develop the hardware and software want us to mod our consoles thats why they leave holes open they just want to make a it seem harder so they can keep on the good side of their bosses'?
