Adtron's 160GB drive nabs the 2.5-inch SSD record
It's not quite the coup that A-DATA's 128 gigger was, but just 'cause Adtron didn't 2x the previous record holder doesn't mean 160GB is anything to sneeze at. Adtron's new 2.5-inch SSD drive just grabbed the industry crown for capacity, and they're also boasting about sustained read/write performance in the 70MB/s range, which is supposedly "the solid state industry's best performance." The drive is already shipping in commercial and industrial versions, and comes in I25FB (IDE)and A25FB (SATA) varients. No exact word on price, but we hear you might be looking at somewhere in the range of $80-$115 per gigabyte. Yeah, we know. Aren't you sorry you asked?

WTF does this have to do with SSDs? Find somewhere else to spew your conspiracy BS.
phil @ Feb 24th 2007 8:31AM
another cool yet random fact of info.
And yes.. wait until they become a resonable price. That would be brutal in a PS3.. if it mattered.
Can someone escort "job" out of the comments... this is about Solid State.. not a thread hijack
chezzo @ Feb 24th 2007 7:50AM
@ Job and LTM:
lol
you're such idiots
i would to tell u to get a life, but to be fair i'm commenting on engadget so i can't really talk :p
@ the SSD:
i want! i can't afford!
Mickey Jones @ Feb 24th 2007 12:58PM
The fact that you spontaneously make these comments in a thread about SSD devices illustrates the random and disorganized nature of your thought process and substantially discredits you and your argument.
You're walking a fine line between "unconventional independent thinker" and paranoid schizophrenic.
And yes $80 per GB is expensive ...
Josh McGrath @ Feb 25th 2007 3:27AM
seriously man this is not the freaking place for comments like that
akintz @ Feb 23rd 2007 7:43PM
That would make for one REALLY expensive flash-based iPod.
Jitty @ Feb 23rd 2007 7:46PM
$80!!!!! If you do the math that's $12,800!!!! twelve thousand eight hundred!!! WTF? Are you sure it's not $8 to $11.50. This thing is so expensive it shouldn't even exist right now...
paloooz @ Feb 23rd 2007 7:48PM
No one is going to pay $18,000 for one of those. Lower the price to $600 and we'll talk.
brendan Sheehan jnr @ Feb 24th 2007 10:23AM
Even 600 is a lot of money for a 160 GB hard drive. For the time being I think we'll survive will a slower boot time, and less battery life, oh and more storage for less money too.
John Doe @ Feb 23rd 2007 7:52PM
Look. No one who has a legitimate need for an SSD at this stage in the game has a legitimate need for 160 gigs.

The largest before this was 128GB

SOCOMRAIDER @ Feb 23rd 2007 9:32PM
Yes captain obvious, it says so in the article...
Jason @ Feb 23rd 2007 11:26PM
Stick that into a PS3...
ash @ Feb 24th 2007 12:26AM
Why? that is silly, a 5400/7200rpm standard drive is fine for the ps3's needs, and at this price it is a joke
DAZA @ Feb 24th 2007 6:33AM
You're right, it is a joke. His comment was a joke..
Jason @ Feb 24th 2007 3:42AM
WTF does all this other crap have to do with this SSD? Go play in the road if you can't stick to the topic. Sheesh...
chezzo @ Feb 24th 2007 7:53AM
and wtf?! "the government can definitely afford this"
what do u want the government to do with them once they've bought them? give u a free one most likely
and why the rant about FDR? it was more than 60 years ago! get over it!
ARA662 @ Feb 27th 2007 12:03AM
70MB/s doesn't seem that fast, I'm running raid at 100MB/s.
Spartacus @ Feb 24th 2007 1:44PM
Bush and Cheney could have bought all the $18,000 SSDs they wanted long before either made it to the White House. Honestly, a 9/11 conspiracy for the point of greed when talking about billionaires just seems petty and stupid. No; their motives and actions may not always be benevolent, but if you think these guys don't ask "what do I stand to gain, and what do I stand to lose?" before doing almost everything they do you're foolish. Too much to lose, not enought to gain. Besides, how do you call Bush an idiot and the mastermind of the most heinous and perfectly executed terrorist plot ever on US soil?
Back to the subject at hand, I want one of these and the BREAKS EASY drive destroyers above it to make $18,000 'freedom fries'.
drumr @ Feb 24th 2007 3:29PM
what does it take to convert a laptop to use a solid state disk, or are all ssd's different? Could you just pop out a hdd and put a ssd in there... or in place of flash?
i'm so confused about ssds. i'm excited for them, but confused... and i'm trying to buy a laptop soon so can anyone point me to a website talking about lappies so i can make a good decision?
Mike @ Feb 24th 2007 4:09PM
@drumr
2.5" IDE flash drives have the same form factor as the 2.5" laptop IDE hard drives. The same is true for Serial ATA flavors. So these Solid State Disks are a drop-in replacement for the laptop hard drive.

Rob S @ Mar 10th 2007 1:45PM
True, but remember, this is the speed for one drive, so think what raid would be like with these
