PlayStation Home revealed
Good news for the PlayStation camp, full details of Sony's PlayStation Home have been revealed, and it ain't no slacker. Alongside those avatars and achievements we heard about earlier, the "service" seems to be a new-gen Second Life killer, with public hangouts, personal apartments (to show off those fancy prizes you've been racking up in recent frag fests) and voice chat. The seeming-MMO even includes casual games such as pool, bowling and arcade machines embedded into the world, but at any time you can invite a fellow resident to join in on any PlayStation Network-capable game. As for user-generated content, PS Home allows you to hang your own pictures on your apartment walls and share videos with friends. You can of course dress up your avatar in assorted virtual clothings -- for a price -- all while enjoying "dynamic advertising" of some sort. A large scale beta goes live in April, with the full product to be launched this fall. Make sure to hit up the read link for a gallery of the beautiful scenery and idiotic conversations you too can be enjoying in a few months.
Update: Added a video after the break with more info on the service. PlayStation Home will be a free download, and will eventually include a virtual cinema for watching movie downloads. You can also share videos and music directly out of your media library. Peep the vid for more info.

Sony is damned if they do ...damned if they dont...Most of you will make great wives someday ...(sorry ladies)
job well done sony! PS3 is save for now. :)
1st ? How much is this going to cost.
Seriously, this is stupid. Only people who have NO LIFE will buy into this. This is like Sims online only slicker. Who cares that you'll be able to create an 3D avatar just so you can chat about BS. Are our lives that F'up that we have to get virtual houses to store our shit? come on! Chicks and Couch Potatoes need only apply. Serious Gamers know what to do.
Why so much hate? I think this is a pretty cool feature.
Notice how this is EXACTLY like www.cokemusic.com
Sony is copying CokeMusic, just making their version associated with the concept of Game 3.0 and implementing 3D worlds instead of 2D. I wouldn't be surprised to see some copyright infringements between Sony and the Coca-Cola Company in the next few months.
Looks like Kotaku was right after all.
Firt of all im not a fanboy of any of the consoles (the XB games ive played on are to fiddly with the controls, the wii i have because its just so much fun to have a few mates round and play wii sports, though alot of the games on it do not last long enough, like warioware.)
But the point im trying to make is that the worlds companys know that the future is in making a media device that sits in your living room, so they have to incorparate all these media functions somehow.
PC's rule the world and they realise this and want to expliot the fact that ppl have music and videos on there PC's and want some way of watching them on there TV without to much fuss.
In the end if you like this or not (i think its a good idea) stop moaning how it looks like this or that and accept it will be here to stay.
Reminds me of Habbo Hotel or somethign like that.
I used to play that till i realized how lame i was being.
"Microsoft made a new MP3 player"
"Really? Like the iPod?"
myspace, second life, sims online, cokemusic (wtf?), microsoft bob, mardi gras... maybe we should stop speculating at what this product may be like-unto, since all we'll get is misconceptions. I doubt you can do the building block thing of SL, mixing music like cokemusic is unlikely (though you will probably be able to DJ from your own collection), there will be no simlish nor woohoo!ing, etc...
This reminds me of the shift from console to gui.
'Why would I want to be forced to use a mouse and click on images when I can just type any command I want and have it executed immediate?'
When I saw the bit about meeting up with folk and inviting them into a standard game right from the, shall we say.. metaverse.. I was sold. This is precisely what I have been waiting for, but I want it to extend over everything online, not just gaming. I hope sony includes a browser. How about having a computer in your apartment and when you use it you have the option of making the browser fill the screen of your tv, same with video screens and other media in sony's little world.
I had no plans on getting ps3 until this news. I still won't buy anything until I see it in action and how everything works (or doesnt work) together.
I hope this does well and fulfills many of my snow crash related dreams.
the single most disturbing thing in this article is the words "enjoying dynamic advertising" in there...
is it just that me, or is that like saying "I enjoy getting popups related to my recent ebay purchases because that's not creepy, and I like being inundated with needless advertising on a (presumably) paid service."
Just another thing that Sony has copied from other developers. Looks practially the same as second life and the concept from the Wii. Personally i think that Sony just have no ideas for themself. Look what happened 2-3 weeks before E3 - suddenly Sony annouced that their controller would also have motion sensors in it - suprise suprise. Now im not saying that the PS3 is gunna be crap but its basicly taken all its ideas from other companies. I just cant eait to see when the PS series crashes and burns because at the rate this is going and the loss they are making after ever sale of the ps3 is gunna cripple the PS francise. Now I back M$ and Nintendo on this 1; you may aswell go the wii60 route abd get a 360 and a Wii, better games, more fun and definatly no stolen ideas!
James what you're saying makes no sense and as for copying, I can think of 10000 copied ideas you probably like and since you're backing M$ you probably have a Zune which someone out there will probably jump up and say that its a copy of iPod or something so just hold your tongue when you think you're about to spew nonsense. Please. And you say you don't think Sony is crap but you wish to see the Playstation franchise crash and burn. How about you stop copying other fanboys ideas and get your own buddy. Btw before you accuse me of fanboyism I don't even have PS3 but this surely is leaning me toward buying one. I got X360 though-- since launch in fact.
As far as Home goes I'm pretty excited cause I want to see just how far this will go. Has a lot of potential!
I think it looks great but is free to use or do u have to pay even more money
This looks pretty good but too close to Second Life, even though they claim to be better than Second life. Live is more related to gaming rather than Sony going for everything including online gaming. Home is not about gaming its about social networking. Live is more gaming than anything else. It is going to ruin Sony's extreme gamer market because they want the main thing to be games with a possible splash of something else.

Doesn't this seem like a little much? I mean, it looks amazing, but is it really any different from a lot of online communities? I really feel it's going to fall into the "STFU N00B LOLZ!!11!" cycle much faster than most.
I must say, it's pretty, though. I don't think "600 bucks" pretty, but still.
pssht. Obviously a knock-off of "Second Life."
Whoa, some1 @ sony hits up that "Habbo Hotel" game.
another stolen idea like the sixaxis... "2nd Life" anyone? just trying to put stuffs into it wont help.. XBOX live really has what it truely needed by gamers. This whole things is more like a game itself... sony please come up with some original and innovative!
I don't know about other gamers, but I bought a system so I can play games, not to waste time hanging around a virtual lobby with a bunch of other lame asses. Do you want to game, or do you want to "show off those fancy prizes you've been racking up in recent frag fests"?? Duh, I think i would rather game. After playing COD III on the PS3, hanging around a virtual lobby is about as much fun as watching paint dry.
More video was released at the 2007 Game Delevloper's Conference, it can be watched at www.playstation3home.net
Everyone here that is complaining about this is needs to look at the whole picture and not just the tiny details. The biggest thing to remember about this is that it is completely free and optional, if you do not want to use it then don't. Thats already one thing over Xbox live since you have to pay a fee to use Xbox Live. For those that are complaining that they just want to play games online and not have to run around looking at other people trophies and whatnot then do just that, Sony is not forcing you to explore their online community. That brings me to another point, why are people complaining about the trophies and then praising Xbox Live? Did you forget that Xbox 360 keeps track of achievements? Finally for the argument that all Sony does is copy from other companies. If you consider taking a basic idea that has been used before and adding loads of stuff to it and making it better than what is not copied these days? Did Xbox copy Sony's idea of having a DVD player with the system since the playstation 2 came out first?
Playstation Home will have something for everyone and I believe will be very enjoyable. If you want to just play online games with just friends then you can do just that, but if you want to participate in the online community and meet new people then Home will more than support that.
Basicaly...for those who are interested its gonna be great, kinda like the sims but wiht real people and its free. I cant see why people are so against the idea. i think sony could have really hit on somthing here and i wouldnt be suprised to see M$ attempt to copy it. IF you have no interest in this game or the ps3 then stop bad-mouthing them. i cant see any bad publicity sony could possibly gain from trying to create an innocent program...can you? what the hell is 'wrong' with it?
Once again most contributors have nothing offer but complaints. I used to write software and the response was the same. No matter how ground breaking or how far ahead of the competition, most feedback was negative and from people who couldn't even spell let alone write a program.
Well done Sony, these comments just indicate jealousy, envy and admiration from a bunch of inadequate retards.
Regardless of the ambiguity & biased opinions, this is cool. I agree it's a money maker for Sony with little interest in future development of new games (pisses me off)but I have already invested in the PS3 & welcome new idea's.
My wireless keyboard works fine, bluetooth headset works when it wants too.Understand this folks, we are a part of the next generation of virtualality. We will grow, the technology will grow and eventually we won't talk to anyone on the street....Wait a minute, I do that now.Call it demography or social economy.
As far as pedophiles are concerned in the Home zone,I'm sure Sony will control the pic's and videos.
lol,Rod
This is going to blow 360 right out of the water i used to have a 360 and be a loyal xbox man but just new the ps3 would be better.
The graphics are already showing what they are capable of compared to the first 360 games the console war is off and running bring it on sony.
