Developer confirms rumble coming to PS3
Everything last-gen is new-gen when it comes to the PS3 and its suspiciously absent rumble feature -- at least that's the impression we got from God of War Game Director Cory Barlog, who apparently told 1UP that God of War 3 for PS3 will be 1080p and, more importantly, have vibration (aka rumble, aka force feedback, aka what Sony's been making piss-poor excuses for not having in the PS3 for quite some time). Obviously this is absolutely not a shock considering that Sony and Immersion finally settled and made nice; and we're more than happy to finally have the feature, we're just experiencing a dash of lingering resentment about the facts that a) Sony hadn't been so disingenuous about why the feature wasn't included in the first place (including claims of technical infeasibility) and b) everybody's going to have to buy expensive new controllers for that "last-gen" feature.[Via Joystiq]

well that's good news for Sony fans of GoW, i mean i love that game, just that the first was short n im looking forward to trying out GoW2. GoW3 is probably going to be one of the best titles for PS3, since it will come with rumble.
speaking of rumble, with newer PS3 controllers coming out with rumble, once we get a release date that is, would u guys think the price will increase to $60 from $50? This will equal the prices of the Wii remote n nunchuck controllers put together.
PS3, the next-gen console of the future , because everything is going to be released, fixed, enhanced, bundled ... someday in the near future
if sonys the smart company i kno they r i think price will stay the same
sony isnt compettin wit the wii
the wii is compettin wit 3rd party developers
1080p? I would MUCH rather have 720p with 2x+ the visual effects, etc. Bad decision.
720p? U crazy? 1080p is a lot better for HDTVs when it comes to playing games in that resolution, PS3 can handle it.
unlike my Wii............ :-(
You all voting Mystic down are either foolish, or ignorant to what he is trying to say. It's a good point that he makes. It has always been a problem since we went 3D. Does anyone remember that special mode in, I believe it was the original Gran Turismo, that let you play it at a higher resolution? Anyone who does remember that, remembers that it had simplified textures. My point is, it's a trade off. The power to push 1920x1080 (1080p) and the power to push 1280x720 (720p) is very different. So if you design a game to run at 720p, you can have much more exciting textures, special effects, shadows, etc. At 1080p, you might have to give up some. There are games where 1080p clearly makes the obvious choice though, games with little movement of the textures, like say Virtua Tennis 3, or a golf game for example. For a game like God of War, it heavily relies on fast action, cool effects, and tons of enemies at once, so...
Unfortunately, all that said, games need to be 1080p for PS3 in all honesty, because of the age old Sony problem and anti-aliasing. Sony has never delivered, and the gamers suffer.
This is another screamingly frustrating example of using their fanbase to generate more cash. I mean, anyone who already owns a ps3 is going to want the rumble, meaning their 1.5 - 2 million user base are going to rush out and buy them all up. Their excuses may be piss poor, but their solutions seem to be piss poorer.
Not really. Not everyone HAS to go buy a new controller. Yes you may want to, but it is not being forced upon you. It is a given choice, so get over it.
"Obviously this is absolutely not a shock"
Heh Heh, 'shock'
They didn't include it so they could have some good news to announce to the public post release. [/360 fanboy]
Eh, rumble isn't exactly droolworthy. It will be nice, but I don't look forward to buying new controllers that should of had rumble in the first place($600)...

Actually 1080p isn't better in general. You have to sacrifice graphics to get a higher resolution, just like on a PC. 1080p native doesn't come for free, of course it might just be upscaled like every game is on the 360. I was just listening to a HDTV podcast, and a home theater designer that puts in $100,000 and up systems, usually recommends a 720p projector, because resolution isn't nearly as important as other factors.
720anything over 1080anything??? bonehead. you must not have a high def tv. i don't even watch tv anymore because it's lowdef.
Rumble will be nice with Home, when you can slap your friends on the back of their heads...
or fist fighting, lol. GTA online anyone?
actually the 360 has two available native 1080P games out now.
Virtua Tennis
NBA Street Homecourt
At normal viewing distances for the HDTV's size you will not be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. You could probably tell when everything's paused -- but you're trying to play a game, not watch a slideshow.
The GPU will be taxed far more @ 1080p, and therefore they'll be able to add less visuals than they would have with 720p. And with 1080p that will become more apparent, when the action is paused.
hmm what is the viewing distance, in ur opinion for 720p HDTVs *any size*, from the HDTV to ur couch, in feet?
same goes with 1080p, what is the viewing distance in that resolution?
Reason i ask this is because my friend wants to get a 40" 1080p LCD HDTV, n im telling him no. I would love to send him proof that he wouldnt notice a difference in gaming from his PS3 on that same 40" HDTV he wants to get.
u got a source about the differences of 720p n 1080p in viewing distances?
You don't know what you're talking about. For most 1080p TVs (40+ inches) you can notice a difference. Believe me, I have a 61 inch 720p Plasma, and a 42 inch 1080p LCD.
the viewing distanced i determined by the screen size of the tv
google for "1080p vs 720p." There's a AVS forum discussion on the subject there.
That said, my opinion is just as worthless as everyone else's, maybe more so as I generally don't watch TV, and the closest thing I have to a HDTV would be my 24in monitor. I do agree that it's silly to be buying 720p monitors now, what with plummeting prices and more and more 1080p content being available. That, and I didn't get past the first 30mins of GoW1 before getting tired of its gameplay.
The thing some of the initial posters (including myself) was getting at though, is not that 720p is better -- but that sacrifices that have to be made for smooth play @ 1080p will make it worse than if they designed it for 720p. Obviously movies would look better at higher resolutions (however minimal the benefits may be, depending on factors like viewing distance), as they're just playing pre-recorded media, and the device was made to play it at the appropriate framerate. Same thing doesn't apply when they're having to render all that themselves; they're going to have to be making compromises here and there to accomodate for 1080p.
Exactly. Rule of thumb is that the vertical length of the screen should be one-third of your distance from the television.
It sounds good to me but then Im waiting for the kinks to come out of the ps3 and for the price to come down some.

well, my family has a (Nov. 04) 55" Sony 720p LCD HDTV, it fits almost perfect in the space in the wall to put TVs in. The distance from the couch to my HDTV is about 13'.
if we got a 1080p LCD HDTV, would we notice a difference in resolution when watching movies or playing my friends PS3 on it?
Here is an article resolution vs viewing distance:
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/hitech/1137/maxing-out-resolution.html
Keep in mind that most HDTVs have 768 or 1080 (not 720 lines)
actually that person who said at normal viewing distances you couldnt tell a difference between 720p and 1080p is totally wrong. Perhaps that would be true with 1080i and 1080p, but if you have a large screen hd tv, say 40+ inches, and since americans tend to sit too close to their tv's making flaws all the more apparent, a 1080p picture would look atleast noticeably (all other things but resolution being equal) smoother then the 720p which would have to be stretched to fit a native 1080p display. I have watched many movies in both 720p and 1080i and I notice enough of a difference to keep my ps3 in 1080 mode all the time. Considering my display is native 1366x768 and I still notice a difference means someone with a native 1080p would notice more so, perhaps if you dont do comparisons, or dont have a discerning eye, but most people who invest in tv's capable of displaying 1080p probably would notice.
Plus, screw rumble, I never wanted it in the first place, why is everyone so whiny about it. It is seriously the least of the PS3's problems in fact i consider it a plus, rumble just adds pointless shaking, and will make the controller heavier, f that.
i figured i would notice a better picture in any same movie playing on a 55" 1080p LCD HDTV then a 55" 720p LCD HDTV.
thx for the info, i got the link that Dave gave me, for me to better understand.
kev, i just read your article, i understand what the guy mentions, however that is only about viewing distance and has nothing to do with appearance of 720p vs. 1080, if you sit the right distance away, you should definitely see a difference, up close if anything the 1080 display would look better just because the are more line of resolution, thus fewer gaps between pixels, i.e. less blur and distortion, and it would look sharper. Color and brightness etc are dependent upon display and not resolution.
well if u understand to a question about my friend getting a 40" 1080p LCD HDTV, would it be alright for him to get one instead of 40" 720p LCD HDTV? He lives in a dorm at UC Merced n needs this size of a TV to carry down to Riverside when he comes to visit; he's got a Lancer.
If God of War 2 is as good as the first one, God of War 3 may give me a reason to get a PS3. I have my 360 + HD-DVD now so I can wait till next year. I do want to get a Wii though.
Congratulations, you'll have to buy new controllers! Go Sony!
The best thing about this "upgrade", is they only need to slap in the new controllers into the console box. Current console owners only need to go out and purchase a new controller.
Sure people say, well they should of had it from the beginning. I think it is no big deal, wow you go and buy a $50 controller, now you have an extra controller to boot. At least there are no changes to the console itself, which is rumored to happen to the 360. HDMI and a bigger hard drive doesn't seem like a big change. But tell that to the person who bought a premium 360 31 days prior to release and then is shafted with a lesser system for the same price. Or better yet, what if they charge more for it?
Remember how the PS1 wasn't a DualShock in the first years or its life?
They added the feature to the controller long after the system had launched.
And guess what? The world didn't end. Did many people bitch about the fact that they had to go out and buy new controllers for a feature they didn't get out of the box? No, they just went out and bought them for the new wave of rumble games that interested them.
I swear, people get whinier by the year.
The PS1 wasn't 2X as expensive as the competition and lacking for games like the PS3. They could afford to screw up on a controller since they were in such a sweet spot. In fact, PS1 had more titles than the Saturn, cost $100 less, and was out more than a year before Nintendo's 64. They didn't have to do much to win that generation, and could afford sloppy mistakes and new controllers.
This generation, the battlefield is a lot different. Both Microsoft are more affordable and have a better selection of games. You could probably get both systems for around the price of the PS3, and have access to about 85% of the exclusive content this generation.
first years of* its...
Wanted to correct myself before some douche pops up and says "lawlz! you messed up that wurd!!!1!1 XB360 rulez!!"
Hey PreGhz.. XB360 rules!!!
oh crud.. forgot the z. Please don't haze me.. LOL!
:)
I for one plan on buying a second controller any way so I think its cool that they're coming out with the sixaxis 2. I just hope they upgrade it a little more and add LEDs to the buttons! That would make it a truly HOT Next-Gen controller!
THE REASON WHY SONY COULDN'T TELL ANYONE WAS BECAUSE IT WAS IN LITIGATION, YOU DINK!!!
THIS ARTICAL IS PISS POOR, ALREADY BEEN REPORTED DAYS AGO AND DOESN'T TELL US ANYTHING WE DON'T ALREADY KNOW!
i can just picture a PS3 game coming out that requires rumble feature in order to play the game.. perhaps like a spider sense rumble or something..
oh boy will the loyalists who say rumble is not required and new controllers optional be angry then..
"I do agree that it's silly to be buying 720p monitors now, what with plummeting prices and more and more 1080p content being available."
I bought a 720 plasma because I can't afford a 1080p plasma at this time and I don't like LCD and I refuse to even consider any rear projection technology.
It obviously still does 1080i (downscaling it to it's native resolution of course), and you can't tell me anyone can tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p 99% of the time.
I'm pretty sure that we haven't unlocked the power of the PS3 just yet. Who says that with a little bit of ingenuity, we can't have a fast paced/heavy action game in 1080p without slowdown or loss in effects?
One of those thing where we'll have to wait and see.
Nice back peddle Sony! Does the tricycle go forward too?
well I don't miss the rumble feature, it's the one thing that I'm glad they left out and care less if they leave it out. They could not use the rumble feature in the PS3 controllers because of the ruling against them with the lawsuit from immersion back in 2002. Now that they have settled with them, they can add it to their periferals.
I have two question after reading this lovely PS3 article. Great News!!!
1. How do they intend on dealing with the game titles that's being release without the rumble feature in the long run?
2. Does anybody know when will Sony make this conversion? "I'm kind of stalling so I can get that in my PS3 package".
