After bringing you the
exclusive details on
Samsung's Q1 Ultra UMPC, we got the chance today to get down and dirty with Samsung's second generation UMPC here at the big CeBIT show. Now, let us tell you something right up front: it's here,
UMPC v2 is finally here. The Q1 Ultra brings a smaller form factor, lighter weight, integrated thumb-board, HSDPA data, 60GB disk, WiFi, Bluetooth, and Vista Home Premium running on a 7-inch ,1,024 x 600 WSVGA screen. Hell, it will even pack WiBro data when introduced into the S.Korean market in a few months. As to the processor? Surprise, we received confirmation that the 800MHz Intel processor is an unannounced dual-core (not Core Duo) ultra-low voltage processor that Intel will be announcing in the next few months -- so that's 800MHz on each core. The
Origami Experience made finger-tip control of media on the Q1 Ultra a slippery-smooth experience while the keyboard provided plenty of tactile squishiness -- a luxury our sausage thumbed brethren will have to pass on since the keys are very (very) close together. Click on through the gallery below for plenty of steamy hot pics of ultra portable goodness. Damn, did we really just say that about a UMPC?

I still think these things are such a good idea but the pricing, even with all of the good features, is a bit too much.
One day I would love to have something like this, throw it into a backpack and bust it out to show clients presentations at coffee shops.

I've always wanted to get my hands on an UMPC and now it looks like I might finally do so! Looks like a great device!
Here's hoping we see it in the UK sometime soon.

2 questions:
Battery life
Pen-input...
Anyone??
Kevin C. Tofel @ Mar 15th 2007 2:21PM
The battery is a 4-cell unit; the previous model was a 3-cell. With a dual core ULV CPU and this battery, I'd expect 4-6 hours of runtime. The unit has a passive digitizer (touchscreen), so while you can use a pen to input via the Vista Tablet PC functionality, any stylus or similar object will work. The unit does not have an active digitizer and therefore needs no RF pen.

This is a nice looking device. I like the broken keyboard layout but I'm a little worried that the keys might be too small to type fast/correctly. Kinda reminds me of Treo devices.
Anyway, the price should be cheaper and it would a great 'tweener device, just something you'd like to have while hanging out at a coffee shop or somewhere to just browse the internet/send email without having to take your laptop.
I didn't see a price but I can totally see this thing at about $1000, which is probably $500 more than it should be. I think I'd pay $500 for it though.

So, how does it compare to the as-yet-unshipped OQO Model 2?

Release date is May.
Jeff Lewis @ Mar 15th 2007 3:52PM
I've been so eager to get a UMPC, but I'm glad I waited.
We don't know the final price (the numbers given in the last Q1 Ultra Engadget post were for existing Q1 models - if you read the source closely)... but I'm willing to bet that $999 to $1200 for the basic unit (without DVB-T, HSPDA or WiBro - ie: the North American version) is roughly in the ball park.
I think I know what my birthday present is this year. :)
Hopefully Frys will carry it - now that CompUSA is completely gone from the area of the US closest to me.

I love it and want it .... I have the Q1 ... but as soon this hits the stores I will order it!
mourt4444 @ Jul 11th 2007 6:11PM
can i order the cube G43 i am in calgary and how much dose the cube G43 cost
Terence @ Jul 17th 2007 12:25AM
Does Q2 = Q1 ultra? but in HK Q1U without HSPDA and the price is almost HK$11498.00. If Q2 is not equal to Q1U, when will it hit the market? because I want to hv a UMPC for my frequent trips.
Tony Andrew @ Aug 14th 2007 8:46AM
I have used mine for a month now after upgrading from the Q1, light years ahead of the previous model in screen resolution and user friendly, one huge complaint ! WHO ALLOWED A BAG/CASE THAT RESEMBLES A GENTLEMANS SOCK TO BE INCLUDED WITH THIS PACKAGE?????, to date there are no alternatves on the market, shame on samsung
