Kid takes PSP and makes it play Wii
No, as much as we'd like to see it happen, this isn't some kind of monster emulation effort. Instead, an intrepid young -- and we mean young: his YouTube display name is "obiwan222222" -- PSP Fanboy has managed to get his PlayStation Portable to act as a screen for his Wii using Sony's LocationFree Player solution for the PSP. By patching through the PSP to LocationFree and by sticking what looks like a custom made Wii sensor above the console, the PSP can display the Wii's output using its WiFi to connect to the internet video stream, and a spare Wiimote to control the cursor. Unfortunately, this solution is far from practical, as there's an built-in lag of around 6 seconds: not something you want when playing twitch games. Besides the actual concept, the best part about the walkthrough video (which is after the break), is Obiwan22's narration. One typical quote for you: "I am not some kind of genius. I just want to make a statement [to show] what you can do with your LocationFree Player!" Aww, bless.[VIa PSP Fanboy]

nice work young kid
PreGHz @ Mar 17th 2007 10:17AM
Pretty ingenious, if impractical.
This brings the usefulness of my LFPlayer up one point. For a total of one point.

Ben Heck's padawan.

Larryi5 @ Mar 17th 2007 12:14PM

sendeth @ Mar 17th 2007 12:42PM
we need to get this kid together with the kid that built a small fusion reactor in his basement and see what they can come up with.
very creative, keep it up, kid.
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Mar 18th 2007 8:25PM
You must be kidding, I doubt some kid built a Fusion Reactor in his basement.

something i really want to see is nintendo ds emulation on the psp. granted some games wont work as well with the (non)touch screen, most popular games such as mario 64 dont even require too much touch on the touch screen. i would actually pay for ds emulation on the psp.

Any DS game that would actually be playable on such a radically different architecture is most likely already available on a different console. The actual process of emulating a DS on a PSP would be a nightmare to program. Dig up a n64 or snes emulator instead.
Mayank Gupta @ Mar 19th 2007 10:27AM
what you say is true. But, SNES, NES, N64, Sega, PS1, GBA, and PSP have all been successfully emulated on the PSP. I think with a little programming, its possible. The reason it would not be a good idea to simply play the game through say a GBA emulator is that you would not be able to do the DS additions such as link and play which is the primary reason you would prefer DS to any of the above listed.

Nothing fancy here, folks.
You can get anything that outputs through AV To appear on you PSP with the location free player.
I could hook up a 360 and "play it", with my wireless controller with a 6 second delay.
I could also "play it" on my laptop if I wanted to.
Paul @ Mar 17th 2007 2:48PM
now the psp is useful for something at least
Nick Dunn @ Mar 17th 2007 3:16PM
Pretty sure WarioWare is the worst possible game to demonstrate ... 6 second delay with 5 second mini games, whoops.
Didn't get to see much real game footage anyways, but ah well.
paloooz @ Mar 17th 2007 3:18PM
How many times do I really need to tell people this? The "Wii sensor bar" is not a sensor. It has two IR lights on it. The sensor is IN THE WIIMOTE.
sirhackalot @ Mar 17th 2007 3:22PM
nope he is american, you can tell from the nasal sound in his voice....
Rich @ Mar 17th 2007 4:02PM
"No I'm not 10, 11, 12... just 16 with a high pitched voice." LOL
Leon @ Mar 17th 2007 4:43PM
He doesn't sound like someone from europe (although "europe" is one of the most generalised comments i've ever heard), he sounds like an american between the ages of 10-12 lying on his stomach (which i'm pretty sure he is).
If there's one thing he is not, its a 16 year old with a high pitched voice.
I love the way he keeps trying to prove that it's not fake. Its not a hard thing to set up, even at his age, and i'm willing to bet it would be harder to fake than actually do.
Matt @ Mar 17th 2007 4:44PM
kid needs to be put to work in a sweat shop
spaceman @ Mar 17th 2007 6:22PM
First off his info on youtube puts him down as being a yank not from Europe! You can hear an american twang to his accent anyways! Secondly, who cares! If he's 16 and put this together, that's quite clever. Not everyone is great when it comes to speaking for a camera.

I didn't want to believe it, but it turns our Engadget really does hate Sony. Just because this guy uses a PlayStation Portable, they refer to him as a "PSP Fanboy". I'm disappointed in you, Engadget.
Conrad Quilty-Harper @ Mar 18th 2007 8:44AM
Heh, I was actually referring to PSP Fanboy in a positive sense. It doesn't always have to be a derogatory term (see PSPFanboy.com's tagline: "Yeah, we're fanboys and girls... so what?")
obiwan22 @ Mar 18th 2007 8:20PM
Well I am european I talk polish and born there. But live in USA!!
