Xbox 360 Elite: new, black limited edition Xbox with HDMI and 120GB drive

We've confirmed with trusted sources that the black Xbox 360 is indeed coming (the image above is of the original 360 dev kit, FYI), and will be dubbed the Xbox 360 Elite. Here's what you need to know about it:

• The Elite will be limited quantities only; that may be as much or as little as a couple hundred thousand.
• The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will have all new packaging.
• Elite will cost $479, and will be a 3rd SKU; it will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs.
• Eventually Elite hardware (in white plastics) will take the role of the Xbox Premium. That is to say, after the Elite is launched and sold out, future Xbox Premiums will have 120GB / HDMI.
• We do not yet know exactly when 120GB / HDMI will become the standard for Premium, but it is loosely estimated to be late summer or fall.
• Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips.
• Prices may remain the same with the 120GB / HDMI hardware upgrade in the Premium Xbox, but we may still see a price cut on the line when 65nm chips start shipping.
• The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360.
• There are no current plans to integrate WiFi into the Elite or future Premiums (although that can always change).

I personally don't think wireless is worth the extra cost. I ran CAT-5 in my house.

And without 65nm chips, I don't think this is the board spin I want to invest in... these first-pass XBOX360, with their heating problems, eat ass. My roommate must keep replacing our unit despite the wide open air we give it far away from the AV stack. It's going to really suck when the one year warranty runs out.

I've never been a Playstation fanboy, but the PS3 keeps looking better and better. I'll play Halo3 on the PC and invest in a Blu-ray player with a high end chip that doubles as a phat gaming console.

Cybormorph, the Elite is still an xbox360 with a different shell. Deep down, it is the same old 360 and will function the same as the 360. The only difference is HDMI and larger HDD. Even though it has HDMI, it still doesnt do True 1080P.

Its hard to say if an xbox will crap out on you or not, if they havent already fixed the problems with the xbox by now, then theres a small chance that the Elite will be free from defect, but no technology is. I just dont know why xbox had a large failure rate and why i still hear of xbox breaking down.

If you already have a functional 360, you can purchase the 120 gig for $180, HDMI will do you no good since its still only 720p and 1080i and emulated 1080P.

I would wait for the price to go down, its been 1.5 years, its gotta go down soon, the xbox isnt worth the $400 or the $480, and you can't do much with the core.

It comes down to who has money in Microsoft and who has money in Sony anyway. I've seen screens for everything and compared them show me one comparison pic that the 360 looks better in.

I have Double Agent on both systems its OK on 360 compared to PS3. The textures aren't worse the lighting is fine, and there is no frame loss for me and it's running at 1080i. I said before I have both systems and am selling the 360 and it's games so I'm buying the ones that were fun on 360 for PS3 and seeing the difference now.

Those are informal postage updates of what is going on with the ps3 and 360. The truth the facts. 360monster says in the GTA IV of theirs will have update able stuff, but do to blu-ray the ps3 would come out with more detailed proxy climate than it would. It's honest and in the psu site they are honest about better games that would go for 360 that are multi platformed.

If you dig through both of their archives and message/news, you'd find the truth about the elite and everything about it posted from the spokesman of the gaming district in Microsoft and in psu you'd find the update able firmware that'll be available to the ps3 to help pull out its potential.

Sony is changing the processor to 45nm which is goign to lower prices greatly.

Some Things you know without facts. Just like we all know that japanese cars are more effiecient and durable compared to american cars. On paper, you can prove that Honda has better gas mileage, but not durability, but we all know that honda will last longer than any american car. To say otherwise is denial.

Another car example, we all know that The Civic SI is quicker than the V6 Mustang, but if the person behind the mustang is a more experience driver, the mustang would win. But you dont know anything about this as you probably can't drive.

If we had 2 teams working on Halo 3, one for the 360, and one for the ps3, it might take longer for the ps3 team to developt Halo3, but in the end, it would have better gameplay and better graphics as well.

On paper, and actuality, the 360 is inferior to the ps3, and has a higher failure rate. Yeah, xbox has a few good games with great graphics and online play, but, when a developer becomes more experienced with the ps3's technology, it will own the the 360.

My cousins whom play gears of war online all the time, and are a fan of the game, wished that they had the ps3 instead. They're not ignorant, they just know a better system when they see one.

The way that you defend the 360 without Merit, makes it seem as though you're a kid that cant afford both systems, and regret your purchase of the 360, so you justify it by making grandiose claims.

I plan on getting the 360, my only justification to buying a 360 is Halo 3. Who knows, i might be in your shoes defending the 360 to justify my purchase.

wow, this has a larger HDD than the PS3...It's a good job that unlike the xbox, the PS3 is compatible with any standard hard drive - you can upgrade it to whatever you want and you don't have to pay monopoly prices like on the XBox

The ps3 delay, was caused because the production for blu-ray discs take longer to develop for. It was to help get more games rdy and was also due to technology delays. Not to mention it wasn't promised in the spring for US or Europeans. The delay had only hurt Japan's sales. No biggy sales have proven good to Sony.

You can tell that pic is a fake, looks like they just dimmed the lights and made the power button glow on the console, and looks like they just added a controller from a regular xbox. As for the 120GB HDD I think MS really needs to think higher, downloads these days are enormous. But it is a step in the right direction, as for not being able to transfer data from 120 to 20, why would you want to in the first place, just keep all the new stuff on the 120 and leave the old stuff for playing games or it cant be that much information actually, just transfer the 20 to the 120 and you have a clean 20 for other games, downloads, demos, whatever you desire.

Playstation has the option of you extending the harddrive so this Elite of 120g's is just another desperate call for MS to try and stay afloat. Also, for those who talk about HD being better than Blu-Ray? I suggest you do your research, for Blu-Ray holds about 33% more memory than an HD disc does. (Picture the whole Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Editions with the features all in one disc.) Imagine what that can do for the games. Again, MS just plain sucks and t's on it's last wings. =-D

I think that MS is getting quite desperate if you ask me. Yes, I did play the 360, and know I have no desire for it. The system's strength are for those who love sports or FPS and for online games. But as for other games, well, it's not worth it. Craft - They have the possibility to add on the HD-DVD as internal, because you can get the external for $200 and play the games on it.
They real reason for them not doing it is because Gates said, People this generation aren't ready for Hi-Def and we aren't going to make them pay more for a gaming console that way. We'll have it external if they want to buy it.


Jaden is absolutely correct on the Blu-ray and HD-dvd data.

LG already has a Hybrid that plays both for $1200. Id rather buy the ps3 and the 360 than the LG.

Wii is cool, but not amazing, it was designed for people that dont play games, and its very cheap. Just becuase it has hte most sales, doesnt mean its better. The Lexus LS is one of the most advanced cars out there, 8 speeds and it parks itself, it doesnt mean that it outsells a honda civic. Wii isnt even in the same league as ps3 and xbox.

With all that aside, i have a question. When the xbox launched it had many problems and a high failure rate, i was wondering when they fixed the problem with the box. I am asking becuase my cousin is selling his xbox, and he got it between thanksgiving and christmas. He has the premium and is selling it for $250. I dont want to buy it if its going to crap out on me.

Premium is all i need, i dont need the Elite that is coming as i only have 1 HDMI behind my tv and is reserved for the ps3, and the xbox doesnt do True 1080p so HDMI is not important.

I think everyone else here is having a good laugh and most remain calm and collected with their thoughts,some argue alot better than others,some curse each other,thats life buddy,need to stay calm.

I can confirm it is completley incorrect.
Blu Ray and HD-DVD are TOTALLY NOT HARD DISKS.
They are completley different devices which really cant be compared,a bit like an apple and orange comparison.

Blu Ray and HD DVD are classed as optical Media or optical Disks.Their data is stored in `pits` on a extremley thin film of (usually) aluminium,which is encased in a Polycarbonate coating.These disks are read by laser Diodes of varying colors.They are removable.

There are several forms of Optical Media besides Blu Ray and HD-DVD,such as our old CD,or the DVD or MiniDisk ect.

Hard Disks,or the more common term Hard Drive (HDD) are fundamentally diffrent in several ways.For starters they are a `fixed disk` i.e non removable.The data transfer to/from a HDD is far faster than the said Optical Media,along with HUGE storage,well over 11 or so Blu Ray disks combined!!
Last time i checked,Seagate had manafactured a 750GB HDD,with specalist HDD even bigger still!!

Another fundamental difference is the disk or `platter` where by data is stored via an impressive magnetic process which aligns the material into a `data pattern`.
This data is read by a disk `head` unlike Optical Media`s Laser Diode.

It is far more complex than my summary,but this description suffices to show the clear distiction between the two unrelated media types.

If one was to enter a computer store and ask for a Hard Disk,you certainly would be given a HD-DVD or Blu Ray player lol!They are NOT THE SAME!

Just as a curious aside,i have never in 14 years of PC repairs come across someone who confused Optical Drives and Hard Drives into the same classification.

Sorry but got to point out thats totally wrong,there was a very small rumour,but it was quashed almost immediatley by the big M.
The HD-DVD will,atleast for the foreseeable future NEVER play games,it never has and probably never will.Microsoft have been big on the fact they,and to be honest,a lot of developers say with good compression DVD9 will be fine throughout all `this-gen`,prolly needing more than 1 for a very few maybe,like Blue Dragon,with the heavy HD-DVD VIDEO CLIPS.Its not needed for extra detail and all that stuff,thats a silly misnomer.If more space is ever needed,it will span 2 disks `shock-horror`
The HD-DVD is purely an option for HD movies,thats all.Although i think now prices for HD-DVD is cheaper,one could speculate its not impossible for one to be introduced in a future hardware revision,just very,very unlikley as they have a standalone on the market=more dollars.

Okay, so there are three new generation consoles out. The Wii, Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. Of course the Playstation 3 wins technology wise. It's got a fancy DVD player and so much capability they aren't even sure what they really do with it. It also has some crazy controller. It's a neat system. It sounds neat, right? Wii is fucking amazing. It's cheap and it completely redefined video gaming. It has out-sold the other systems as well. Good for Ninetendo, right? We all had a SNES and we loved it. The Xbox is is right in the middle. The games are good, solid. It's got a nice list of games you can play on it. Online game play is unbeatable. Xbox Live is the most sophisticated online system out of the free. Sure, you have to pay for it... But it's well worth it. Now! About the new Xbox Elite, it's expensive... Beautiful and it has so much fucking memory for a gaming system. People are saying, "why not just get a PS3?" Why would you? "Oh, I'm going to pay out of my ass for a fucking movie player." It's a God damn video game system.

Jesus Christ people. If you want your Xbox to play some HD-DVD's and Blu Ray movies go fucking mod your box. I mean, how long do you think it's going to take for someone to make a drive that plays both? There might even be one out there right now. I don't know.

Anyways, point is: all three systems are made for different people with different needs, but of course each company wants as many customers as it can get. They all design the systems to appeal to a certain group for saftey. It's just fucking marketing.

But whatever, keep arguing over which one's best or which one is lame, and how much the games on this system sucks compared to this system and the size of the hard drive, the controllers, etc.

They're all fun.
