It's for playing your downloaded media in you living room. Most people don't like being tied to their PCs when they watch their downloaded tv shows and music.
"I dont see any reason why someone wouldnt just get an xbox 360 for the same price. you can do so much more with that."
Better yet, one of several off-brand divx hard-disk players, which are a) cheaper, b) let you install any size harddrive, and c) support desired formats including divx.
