The big deal for me with back compat is replacing the older console. This was the case with my xbox, when the launch console crapped out recently I finally had a really good reason to buy a 360 and was still able to play my favorites from the original. I'd say alot of PS2 owners will be upgrading once their PS2 craps out and would like to have their games worth something.
