Toshiba has finally shed the frumpy aesthetics of its
Qosmio GXX line of desktop replacements and co-opted the clean white lines of the
R400 for the brand new Qosmio G40. There's the "usual" 17-inch 1920 x 1200 screen, dual 200GB hard drives, T7300P Core 2 Duo processor (
Santa Rosa), 2GB of RAM and other basic necessities like that, but things get extra interesting with the 512MB GeForce 8600M GT graphics, an HD DVD-R drive and HDMI 1.3. The laptop should be come to at least Europe in June, with an asking price of around 3000 euros (about $4004 US).

$4004, huh?
Meh, $4 too much...
kingofwale @ Apr 6th 2007 11:09AM
I would... but not with Blu-Ray winning the war. I don't want an obsolete format on my 4K laptop
TheShutt @ Apr 6th 2007 1:13PM
aside from hard drives, those multi drives are fairly easy to swap out should HD become completely obsolete
however i don't see that likely
ph @ Apr 6th 2007 1:48PM
Blu ray is not winning the war. HdDVD has 10 more exclusive releases in the next few months than blu ray has. Oh yes, and the Matrix trilogy is coming out exclusively for hddvd in may.

huge bezel around screen on a 17 incher? that is weird - this thing must be huge.
NarfPointZort @ Apr 6th 2007 11:39AM
Dang... That's all I have to say.
vern plageman @ Apr 6th 2007 11:56AM
No dedicated number pad?
Jessica @ Apr 6th 2007 12:03PM
Poor Toshiba.. they really did try to make it not hideous.
Too bad they failed. ;[
Willi @ Apr 6th 2007 12:04PM
"Blu-Ray winning the war"? LOL! No format is "winning" right now I can tell you that much.
LA @ Apr 6th 2007 12:42PM
WHERE CAN I GET THAT SCREENSAVER. THAT LOOKS REALLY COOL
louie @ Apr 6th 2007 12:49PM
nothin said about battery life... all that crap inside would kill a car battery in less than half an hour.
cjrenaud @ Apr 6th 2007 8:25PM
The Matrix is being released on HD-DVD first, but it's not an exclusive release. They've already stated that Blu-Ray is soon to follow.
B @ Apr 6th 2007 2:14PM
Good lord, look at that giant bezel!
Z @ Apr 6th 2007 2:52PM
17" screen? Bah! For that price, and based on that photo, they should've fit a 19" or 20" WUXGA screen in there. They certainly had room for it.
They also need a dedicated four-column (not three column) keypad in there, as well. (Look at HP's 8000 and 9000 series laptops - that's how a keyboard should be). And backlight it, for crying out loud!
And why don't they integrate a swiveling video camera in there? And a biometric reader?
Four large? That's a lotta lettuce. For that price, this thing needs to/should have all I mentioned above, in addition to what it currently has.
Z @ Apr 6th 2007 2:55PM
Oops. I guess the biometric reader is there afterall. My bad.
Well, one thing down. Four more to go. Then we can call it good.
Z @ Apr 6th 2007 3:01PM
Just read the HDD's only spin at 4200 rpm. Forget that.
Last call: One thing down, FIVE more to go.
A beast like this shouldn't have anything less than 5400 rpm (or better yet, 7200rpm) SATA drives.

I really think that Toshiba was trying to make a dektop that looks like a laptop. I dont think they intend for this laptop to ever leave the house. Maybe move it from a desk to coffee table but thats it. It seems like a HTPC laptop. Kinda like toshibas version of an iMac with built in keyboard and mouse. This definitely is not intended for your daily commute.
Naveed @ Apr 6th 2007 5:15PM
and are those speakers or fans above the keyboard?
Deezee @ Apr 6th 2007 5:18PM
This is exactly what I need! Except cheaper.
Omar @ Apr 6th 2007 11:38PM
Shut up punk
cjrenaud @ Apr 8th 2007 1:28AM
Aw, don't cry, Junior. Your VHS tapes will still play for long into the future.

Dual-Link? Did Nvidia finally put dual-link in their 8 series laptop cards. While I prefer Nvidia for desktop cards, they completely forgot dual-link DVI for laptop cards. Therefore will this be 1.3a or 1.3b?
