So we just got it straight from the horse's mouth -- the horse in this case being Sling Media's and Zatz Not Funny's own Dave Zatz -- that the company is hard at work on adding Apple's Apple TV to the growing list of devices compatible with your SlingBox. As Dave points out, not only will
Apple TV compatibility allow you to placeshift your video content, you'll also be able to stream your entire iTunes library thanks to the 'Box's audio-only mode; who needs an iPod when you can access all your music directly from your
Windows Mobile,
Palm, and possibly J2ME-equipped cellphone sometime in the future? As usual, we'll let you know when you can start slinging your Apple TV swag, and of course, if and when Team Sling does decide to build a Java client (hint hint, nudge nudge).

Prediction: software-based programs offering similar capabilities force Sling Media to abandon hardware-based products ... just a matter of time until the same thing that is happening to Tivo happens to them. :(

Maybe sling should work on blackberry compatibility instead. They'd realize more of a benefit from that than from Apple TV.

Why would I want to stream video to such a tiny device?
Not to single you specifically, but I don't understand why people are interested in watching crappy quality video on such a small screen. I know people say "in some situations it's better than nothing", but in those situations, maybe reading a magazine is a better option.

I hope Sling is working on this for a quick release.
I hate hearing about something and then having to wait over a year for the release, like what happened with their Sling client for OSX.

They should be working on iPhone compatibility first

You're absolutely right...with all those demo units and all. And let's not forget the iPhone's closed architecture...(and EDGE radio)

You're next Orb. Sling and Orb compatibility would make the AppleTV a little more interesting.
Galley @ Apr 10th 2007 5:34PM
I’m sure Apple is already working on a way to access your entire library from an iPhone either via a Wi-Fi hotspot or the Internet through a cellular network.
martin @ Apr 10th 2007 5:55PM
Orb already does this (the music thing)

Peter: If you don't want to watch video on a mobile device, how about viewing all your iPhotos or listening to all your iTunes? Not to mention we do support larger screens on OS X and Windows.
WHAT?: How does Q2 sound?

Zatz- You guys workin on making iphone slingable? How about bb's?
rantanamo @ Apr 11th 2007 12:51AM
The funniest thing about all of this modding is that it simply is not what Apple is all about. I thought Apple products "just work" and are targeted at people who believe this. Why would someone who would go to this trouble choose such a weak device to do it with?
junkie @ Apr 11th 2007 1:49AM
why not make the apple tv able to watch sling video - then I could watch tv thru apple tv interface.
