It's a little late to the party, but
MGM has finally joined
Paramount,
Lionsgate, and others in offering a selection of its films for download in the iTunes Store. It's not the first time MGM has served up some of its movies in digital form though, with the studio already having inked a deal with Amazon's competing
Unbox service. Those that prefer not to stray too far from iTunes, however, can now snag titles such as Ronin, Dances With Wolves, Mad Max, Rocky, Foxy Brown and, yes,
Robocop at the usual "near-DVD quality" resolution for about ten bucks a pop.

Dear Apple and MGM, can you please take my money?
It's sitting on my account waiting for you to take it via iTMS for my greatest pleasure of purchasing HD content.
I don't want Blu-ray or HD DVD, and yes I understand that this HD content will take longer to download and that I won't be able to play it on my iPod. But I sure would love to play it on my HDTV at home.
Thanks

$10 for "near-DVD quality"?
Why not just go buy the DVD for the same price or cheaper?
I will never understand the iTunes store...

Uhhh..lets see...Pay for movies, music, apps, and everything else digital or get it for free...such a hard choice, always a hard choice.
p.s. oh and spare me the "royalties, artist deserve to be paid" bit.

Uhhh...let's see... Get a job, earn a paycheck and buy things... or rob a bank and get stuff for free.... such a hard choice, always a hard choice.
p.s. oh and spare me the "you can go to jail for robbing a bank" bit.

Well I live in Europe at the moment and the DVD just isn't available in stores yet.. + Amazon takes anywhere between a week and never to get it here.
So 15mins on the DSL is pretty competitive.
Not having to re-encode to the iPod is also an advantage.
I have pretty long working hours and Blockbuster isn't always an option for me. I like the impulse that iTMS provides me with.
But I agree with you, $10 is a little expensive. I usually buy the TV shows instead. Much better value in Mins on entertainment/$ spent.

"well, some people don't want to break the law"
You don't have to break the law to get equal to or better than DVD quality and High Definition movie and TV downloads. Have you heard of the Xbox 360?
The other day I rented Wassup Rockers...a 480p rental. In my opinion it looked slightly better than a DVD on my HDTV. I've also watched a few TV shows and Movies in 720p which look great and almost as good as watching HD movies via my HD-DVD player.

I can understand getting a job so you can buy things...buying digital stuff with the money is the thing I don't understand.

thats all well and good if a) you have or want an xbox and b) you want a big noisy box next to your tv to disturb your viewing and c) you own or want windows. none of these meet mine or many others criteria
Jon @ Apr 11th 2007 1:34PM
You don't need Windows or a PC. Movie and TV Downloads happen directly through the Xbox 360 Video Marketplace.
"thats all well and good if a) you have or want an xbox"
This has not so much to do with having or wanting an Xbox...it's about having and wanting to play DVD and HD quality movies and TV shows on your Television. If you want to do that then I offer that the Xbox 360 is a much better way to do that than the iTV.
Yes the 360 is noisy...but I never notice while a movie is playing as the noise is easily drowned out by surround sound at even moderate levels.

When are Apple and the Studios going to realise that people exist outside of the United States? It's all very well having devices like the iPod Video and the AppleTV, but what use are they if the iTunes store won't let you buy anything to watch on them.
David Krieger @ Apr 11th 2007 3:11PM
Movielink.com and Cinemanow.com have had MGM movies all along, as well as every other major studio.

"When are Apple and the Studios going to realise that people exist outside of the United States?"
When foreign governments stop making a clusterfck of trying to get the licensing done?
