Second generation iriver clix hits the States
It's a good time to be on the lookout for a new DAP: there's that LG FM37, SanDisk's Sansa Connect and Sony's new NW-A800, and of course all that new DRM-free music from EMI on the way. Now iriver's getting in on the action, releasing its redesigned second generation clix in the States for pair of hundies. The pricetag is comparable to other 4GB flash players on the market, but the 2.2-inch QVGA AMOLED screen, fancy looks and support for 30fps MPEG-4 video and Macromedia Flash Lite make it a bit of a standout in North America. If $200 is too pricey for you, you can grab a 2GB version for $150, or wait until June for the $250 8 gigger.

I'm surprised they're going to pack 8gb. i love my clix1, but the 15fps was a bother. now i don't use it since my phone (motorola a1200) plays 320x240 xvid @ 30fps. the device is really good and i recommend it to anybody. the user interface, and screen quality is amazingly good. yes, it plays xvid. :). built-fm tuner (though radio now sucks) and built-in microphone for listening. mini-usb cable as well (non proprietary cables). 8gb for $250 looks very attractive
mini-CHikO @ Apr 25th 2007 2:10AM
i got the a1200 (for almost a year now)... i never knew it supported xvid/avi files. actually i tried to put videos in it and it never works. please teach me...
ShortFuse @ Apr 12th 2007 2:45PM
The biggest benefit of this is the physical size. You can slip it in that coin pocket in your jeans and it fits perfectly. what this device is really for is video playback. cartoons look flawless on it (live action is good too, but with cartoons the resolution can be lower). i used to watch anime on my clix all the time.
If you need to go smaller, they sell the s10 (which is better than that crappy ipod shuffle because it actaully has a screen) but no flashlite, video, or games. mostly music only. i recommend getting that if you don't care for video.
quiwiz @ Apr 13th 2007 11:32AM
I use it to watch anime too, but I have a problem with subtitles on a 2.2" screen. Any suggestions? I've been drooling over the clix2 since it came out in korea... my poor wallet...
anonymouspimp @ Apr 12th 2007 2:55PM
All I have to say is... IT'S ABOUT TIME, IRIVER!
Good lord... I thought they would NEVER release it in the states. You guys were doing so well... then you just up and disappeared. Now get to work on getting your other players you revealed at CES on the shelves! What's the point of hyping products if you aren't going to sell them to the people you are hyping them to? lol
CuriousChickKimmi @ Apr 12th 2007 2:56PM
It looks really good! But I don't know about the memory.... anyhow, I'm looking for a really good portable video and music player that is or will be on the U.S market before the end of May, 2007. Anyone have a clue? I like the Ipod video, but I don't like it's looks so it's my back-up if I can't find anything else to buy... please help me! my email is kimtquach04@yahoo.com. pleaes Email if you have any suggestions. =]
MINIratman @ Apr 12th 2007 3:26PM
Wait since when does this play xvid or is that only the motorala a1200? ...coz i
was already thinking of getting one, and that would just confirm my
purchase, but thats really the first ive heard of it supporting xvid/avi stuff.
js @ Apr 12th 2007 3:27PM
It won't sell. It's not an iPod.
chadow @ Apr 12th 2007 3:42PM
Damn. This looks fine...I would go as far as say superfine.
Silver R. Wolfe @ Apr 12th 2007 5:16PM
I want all this sexy iRiver goodness.
ll McBain ll @ Apr 12th 2007 5:39PM
Anyone know where I can find one retail wise... I can't seem to find anyone selling it just yet... not even on the iriver store either.
Eric Stoller @ Apr 12th 2007 6:09PM
I hope they fixed their connectivity issues. Having to upload songs via windows media was the suck.
Ryan.Ozechowski @ Apr 12th 2007 6:18PM
II McBain II- You can order one at http://www.theiriverstore.com/ There is a forum there too and it sounds like this model will only be available online.

Is it a touchscreen? I don't know what an AMOLED is ...
Forgive my ignorance :(
ShortFuse @ Apr 13th 2007 9:46AM
it plays xvid. use iriverter to convert (it's free, opensource, multiplatform and fast) http://iriverter.sourceforge.net
iriverter doesn't only convert for the clix (it's just an mencoder GUI, but the best there is, and so it can support whatever codecs mencoder does). i recommend R16 if you want to tinker with profiles.
The profile for the clix1 is: XviD 15fps @ 384kbps with MP3 @ 128kbps
The profile i made for my a1200 is: XviD 30fps @ 384kbps with MP3 @ 192kbps
The clix2 is 30fps, and i'm sure the bitrates can go a little higher than the clix1 (being that it uses a faster processor)
Mike Kelly @ Apr 13th 2007 12:07PM
Wutang..
the 2nd gen clix utilizes the same D-Click Navigation from the original U10 and clix designs.
AMOLED is a new type of display that provides the same video performance of the previous OLED, with significantly reduced power drain on the battery.
More reading on AMOLED:
An active-matrix OLED (AMOLED) display consists of OLED pixels that have been deposited or integrated onto a thin film transistor (TFT) array to form a matrix of pixels that illuminate light upon electrical activation. In contrast to a PMOLED display, where electricity is distributed row by row, the active-matrix TFT backplane acts as an array of switches that control the amount of current flowing through each OLED pixel.
