Apple WiFi iPod due Q3 2007? Let's not bet the farm.
Perennial Apple rumor-ist DigiTimes has come out with a biggie today, predicting a non-iPhone, WiFi-connected iPod in Q3 this year. The rumor isn't preposterous, despite the fact that Apple would be hamstringing its own iPhone sales slightly by releasing what would no doubt be a cheaper and more roomy traditional iPod so soon after the iPhone's debut. Wireless sharing is the future, and Apple's probably going to have to squeeze it into its own players sooner or later. What gives us pause is DigiTimes' abysmal track record with Apple hardware rumors, and despite its best assurances of component manufacturers getting in on the action -- USI shipping the WiFi chipset in April, and Foxconn slapping the iPods together in Q3 -- we're going to remain doubtful on this one.[Via TG Daily]

Copycats !!!

To be fair, Digitimes did call the October delay of OSX 10.5.

I really...really want to see a nano with WiFi.
Proud Zune owner
Arthur @ Apr 13th 2007 4:33PM
I totally agree.
If the iPhone will have Wifi and that's available soon, then by the time Q3 hits it should be refined enough to fit into a nano.
Web browsing on a 1.5" screen anyone?
Amir Naqui @ Jul 11th 2007 9:01AM
wifi not for browsing, but for wireless synching. wouldn't you want to be able to charge your ipod and synch it from any where in your house?
kingofwale @ Apr 13th 2007 4:21PM
This thing should've come before IPhone, let's hope it doesn't cost as much.
I waited for 1 year for this, but finally couldn't anymore and got the 80GB Ipod during Christmas. now I hope to get the second gen of true-Ipod video (if my current ipod last that long)
Todd @ Apr 13th 2007 4:33PM
iPod WiFi - the unrestricted kind? Like the Nokia 770? Connect to any WiFi signal of my choosing? I'll totally buy one...
Or "WiFi" like the Zune, all restricted and mangled by bureaucrats and lawyers? No thank you.
Friday Extra: Dave Zatz sez you can Sling Apple TV audio to your phone right now:

..no waiting for the iPhone or WiFi iPod

oh god.. the Ipod Rumors are starting again!! nooooooo!
Jeff @ Apr 13th 2007 4:42PM
Well, I'd rather have iPod rumors and iPhone anything. What Apple did with the iPhone completely killed my interest in that device, and worse, they made it seem like it was the next iteration of the iPod (they said as much in their unveiling). The real iPod, though, now that's a product worth buying.
I'm still on my 4G iPod. A new iPod with wi-fi and a proper clickwheel, with high capacity and the same or better video capabilities as the current 5.5G model would finally entice me to upgrade.
Jeff @ Apr 13th 2007 4:43PM
Ugh, I meant I'd rather have iPod rumors *than* iPhone anything. That's what prescription drugs'll do to you.
paloooz @ Apr 13th 2007 5:40PM
THAT'S IT! Right there! If Apple came out with a touch screen iPod, exact same dimensions, with the screen filling the entire front, I would SOOOO buy it.
Until then, they can stuff their 4:3 screen up their ... places.
Sam @ Apr 13th 2007 5:52PM
I don't care about Wi-Fi in my mp3 player. I want bluetooth so I can stop using a dongle with my wireless headphones. Cut the cord!
Gross Greg @ Apr 13th 2007 5:58PM
Please Apple, just put the damn thing out. I'm right there beside you, Jeff - 8 Gigs of storage is not enough for me. After frequently rolling out incremental revisions of the 4G ipod, it seems like apple has been sitting on the 5G iPod long enough (and I don't feel that "5.5 G" is justifiable, otherwise there should have been a 4.33 G [iPod photo], 4.67 G [iPod photo rev. 2] - both of which are generally considered part of the fourth generation).
Tristan @ Apr 13th 2007 5:59PM
When the Ipod with a touch-able 3 inch screen and wifi comes out on the market, I'm ditching my Zune. I dont really see any reason not to. If apple has those features, along with the already better software, the Zune will be blown out of the water.
Jeff Foster @ Apr 13th 2007 6:12PM
I could care less about wifi. what i really want is just a multi-touch iPod.
Give me the iPhone, with a 30 - 80gb drive, and no communications technology at all. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
then again, wireless would be cool for use with my AppleTV. if the new "wireless iPod" would automatically be a source for any AppleTV in range, i could play movies/music off a friend's iPod just by them walking in my house. that might be pretty cool.
then again, just being able to plug in an iPod to the AppleTV's USB port and use it as a source (while charging) would be nice. :)
anonymouspimp @ Apr 13th 2007 6:28PM
With everyone at Apple working their butts off to get the iPhone ready to the point where they had to take people off the Leopard project, how the heck would they have time to work on a WiFi iPod?
I dunno... sounds like a hoax to me... It just doesn't sound consistant with what Apple is telling everyone in their press releases...
It wouldn't be the first time someone made up an article about adding features to an existing device (probably with hopes that it gets enough buzz and the company actually does it) just to see how far it would go in tech blogs.
Chris @ Apr 13th 2007 10:49PM
They were pulled of to work on the embedded OS X in the iPhone. If the next iPod also has embedded OS X then it could be argued that they were also working on the iPod (in a roundabout way).
Kevin @ Apr 13th 2007 6:38PM
Does apple have something against actual buttons? I always change the song by pushing the button through my pocket instead of having to remove the devise and touch the screen. I would HATE not having buttons on an ipod.
Chris @ Apr 13th 2007 10:50PM
My guess is you will be able to buy a wired remote that lets you do this.
CuriousChickKimmi @ Apr 13th 2007 7:50PM
I don't really have a comment becuase I don't know much about IPods and the lastest technology (that's why I'm here). XD I'm actually looking to buy a Portable Media player by the end of May so if anyone have any suggestions or advice or anything, please let me know. My email adress is kimtquach04@yahoo.com
Oh and I live in the U.S and I don't want to order anything online, so yes, please help me! Thankyou.
seerofdudeness @ Apr 13th 2007 11:05PM
Does anybody know if the thing will have the capability to use itunes shared libraries
Darnell @ Apr 13th 2007 11:08PM
With all the different media phones on the market, its a bit of a stretch to think that a stand alone media player would really hamper the iPhone. At that price point--there are a lot of people left out of the market. Add the low capacity and you exclude current iPod users who like 30 gigs or more in their player.
Keep in mind that the tech that they develope would be shared and therefore would keep R&D costs down. Really making this a win win for Apple. Don't want the iphone--we have an ipod for you--at a more reasonable price rate--and no contract.
iPod Expert @ Apr 14th 2007 2:43AM
How much is that iPod in the picture? Do the buttons disappear after a while, to let the video playback better? The screen is considerably bigger, does that mean shorter battery life? Or did they tweak it so it's longer?
Dr. C @ Apr 14th 2007 4:16AM
iPod Expert, you don't know sh!t about iPods, do you?
Go visit Apple.com and find out all you want to know about "that iPod in the picture."
Oh, and next time bring your sister, ya hump!
Murc @ Apr 14th 2007 4:23AM
"ipod expert" your a douche.
that picture is mearly a fan made pic, of what they would like apple to make.
Everyone thought apple was making a true video ipod, a large capacity mp3 player with a wide screen...but apple (unfortunatly) suprised everyone else with a damn expensive phone.
honestly...with a iphone, apple is helping: Microsoft/Creative/iRiver/Etc.
DANIEL @ Apr 14th 2007 10:48AM

Apple, please come out with this one really quick! I have been waiting for this for like 2-3 years!!! I may get bith, iphone and this ipod, but I won't watch much videos, so if I have an iphone, there is not point of getting an ipod with a lot of space because, I won't use it all, I still have my ipod nano 4gb, the fist gen nano, but who knows, I may get this. Time will tell....
