Toshiba intros line of portable hard drives
While Toshiba's certainly no stranger to hard drives, the company hasn't exactly been quick to jump on the crowded portable storage bandwagon. It now looks to be doing its best to make up for lost time, however, introducing a new line of external USB hard drives boasting capacities all the way up to 200GB -- apparently a first at the 2.5-inch form factor. Descriptively dubbed the Toshiba USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive, the drives also appear to be at least somewhat ruggedized, with a "special patent-pending" shock mount system and a "scratch-resistant" housing. Look for the drive to roll out in 100, 120, 160, and 200GB varieties this week, with 'em running $130, $150, $180, and $230, respectively.[Via AP/Yahoo News]

Why would anyone pay that much for a 200GB usb drive? If it was the size of a credit card, I could see that happening, but it isn't that much smaller than the affordable ones. A quick look on Pricewatch and found a 200GB adaptec w/western digital drive, usb 2.0, for $65.
Looking again, the 100GB, 120GB, and 160GB all cost $65. Toshiba should stick to what they do best... laptops... lol

plus, what you're specking is a 3.5 inch, good luck powering that one without an adapter

Actually, Toshiba does notebook size hard drives very well. Have been doing so for many years.

Oh you guys are such cheapskates! You blow $20 on a peep show yet you complain about a sexy-looking drive that comes with free native-file mirroring software. :)

"boasting capacities all the way up to 200GB -- apparently a first at the 2.5-inch form factor."
Didn't Samsung make a 200 GB 7200 RPM 2.5" drive first?
