Sharp to release high contrast LCD for mobile devices
As our mobile devices skew from email, voice, and web surfin' to include more multimedia -- think live television and video on demand -- nobody (big emphasis on "nobody") is going to get into live TV on fuzzy, blurry, low res screens. To save us from future misery, Sharp has announced a QVGA 2.2 inch LCD with a 2000:1 contrast ratio, a 176 degree viewing angle, and an 8ms response time. The company expects to ship samples for One-Seg mobile phones (portable Aquos?) this fall, followed by a rollout into its other mobile handsets and cameras shortly thereafter. Japanese shipments of One-Seg compatible devices is expected to reach 10 million this year alone, so this could become a seriously hot item -- though, as usual, don't get your hopes up that this will be hittin' our shores anytime soon.[Via Mobiledia]

Can you believe that? The iPhone is already obsolete.

How is the iPhone obsolete? Sharp's display is merely QVGA. The iphone is 480 pixels wide. To make the iphone obsolete you need to have a display that is 800 pixels wide. Well, that and also a highly responsive GUI.

I still don't get why we are so slow too integrate screen technology into glass's.
TOLED screens with a normal LED back, have a bit of perspective offsetting, and you can have it look like theres a cinema screen in front of you :p
OK, might cost a fair bit, but Id like someone to work on it, come on :(

I'd love to see how well the glasses work. I agree, but I want wireless contacts

(Incidently,in the previos posts I meant LCD backs.
Toled screens cant do black, so youd have a Toled screen infront of a LCD to give you total augmented reality)

Hmmm... sidekick 4?

There is already a model of Toshiba Phone in Japan offered by AU KDDI that has a 800x480 WVGA resolution and it's actually quite portable.

Do your research:
QVGA = 320 x 480 px which is the same as the iPhone.
However, the iPhone screen looks washed out when viewed on the side, just look at the pics taken at Macworld.

QVGA is actually 320x240. Speaking of doing your research...

Hi Sean:
Re: "(portable Aquos?)"
Yes, the Sharp 902 for Vodafone Japan was available 2-years ago:
http://wirelesswatch.jp/2004/12/28/vodafone-releases-902sh-3g-phone/
The V902SH features a Mobile ASV display, which is based on ASV (Advanced Super View) liquid crystal display technology found in Sharp’s AQUOS line of LCD TVs
Their 905SH rolled-out for 1Seg in June last year:
http://wirelesswatch.jp/2006/05/22/softbankvodafone-tie-up-is-the-best-of-breed-905sh-good-enough/
There's link for the companies .pdf on that article
Note, it's not just Sharp (Aquos) and Sony (Bravia) but also Panasonic (PEAKS) has jumped in the game with their latest 903iTV unit:
http://wirelesswatch.jp/2007/04/03/panasonic-peaks-3g-phone/
The digital-tv image quality on these 'legacy' models is un-real, so we're looking forward to see the next upgrade.. 8-)
Cheers,
Lars
