BlackBerry email still down, withdrawal setting in
As we noted last night, BlackBerry email is experiencing a service interruption of massive proportions, with the entire Western hemisphere unable to do the push email thing since 8PM EST on Tuesday. Things were supposed to be patched up by midnight last night, but apparently RIM is still trying to reset the system, and expects the problem to last into the morning. Even once the system is good to go -- and we are starting to here reports of some people getting their email -- it'll still take a while for RIM to process through the backlog of email, and the word is they'll be taking it slow as to not esplode the system again, so for all you CrackBerry addicts out there: you might be in for a wait, our thoughts are with you and your idle thumbs.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: BBC is now reporting that RIM has "most" of its North American network back, and that it's "closely monitoring systems in order to maintain normal service levels." (What were they doing before, playing ping pong?) As mentioned before, some users will experience delays as RIM clears the backlog of unsent emails.

Apple did it. for the iPhone.
/sarcasm ends here.
Exactly why I use my own exchange server for PUSH email.
@ Jesse S
It doesn't matter what you use for pushing your email, it still needs to go thru RIM's servers in Canada.
We use BES 4.1 here and have been having intermittent problems since last night.
My MS exchange server uses RIM's servers to PUSH email to my Samsung PDAphone?
My fault, I thought you were implying that you were using a BlackBerry.
Someone just got canned.
!!!FACE!!!
That's why you should be using a Treo
A treo with blackberry connect! HAHA
Treo's are crappy...Small screens, bad keyboards.
Samsun ix30, i760, and some select HTC devices, FTW!
seems service is back:

No problem, man. I wasn't really sure what you were on about. :)
ActiveSynch still works perfect :) Thanks MS
Mine is working as of now. I was sleeping during the service outage!
There's a mail list setup at http://www.c2security.org/mailman/listinfo/bb-outage to notify people of this.
BB-Outage is a mail list for people to notify others if RIM's service is down in a particular area. if RIM is down in China, US, A particular state, city, etc, for people then post the area to the list so others are notified. It's probably best to subscribe from an address that's not associated with your Blackberry since if RIM's service is down, you won't get the e-mail anyhow
I can't believe that RIM is still tying people to thier NOC. There are lots of alternatives out there that don't do this.
I've tried a bunch. The latest being the free offering from Consilient. It works well and I can use it on my new SE K810. I think it supports BB's as well.

I hear the sound of a thousand executives weeping...
I guess since their thumbs are getting their first break in years, the numbness is wearing off.

PLEASE NOTE: The information contained in this email is for your internal use only and may not be shared with any third party without the express written consent of RIM.
The following information is current as of 09:00 on April 18, 2007. All times are EDT.
On April 17, 2007, at approximately 20:15 EDT, the BlackBerry Network Operations Center (NOC) started investigating monitoring alerts in regards to issues with BlackBerry service in the Americas. BlackBerry subscribers in the Americas were unable to receive messages and received an "x" when sending messages. Subscribers were unable to use BlackBerry Email Roaming to or from the Americas.
Initial investigations revealed an issue with the BlackBerry® Infrastructure. Subsequent troubleshooting efforts were not immediately successful in restoring service. At approximately 02:00 on April 18, in an effort to restore service, the components and services for the BlackBerry Infrastructure for the Americas were restarted. Since approximately 05:45, the service has been operating near expected traffic levels. Some subscribers may continue to see delays until message queues are cleared. The BlackBerry Support team is continuing to investigate reports of any remaining issues.
The root cause of this issue is under investigation.
Please note that the ability for subscribers to place telephone calls from voice-enabled devices was not affected during this event.
Thank you for your continued support, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
Sincerely,
BlackBerry Customer Support
oops!
I've still been getting emails - intermittently. Odd.
I was wondering why email and internet was not working last night. its working again today in the morning.
Ok,
Honestly if you are using exchange server 2003 or above, why would you use blackberry and pay a crap load of more money?
Exchange does direct push just fine with Treos, Blackjacks, Q's, etc. It just doesn't make sense.
I can give you several reasons:
1) with the pseudo-push email enabled in Exchange 2003 through the Microsoft Messaging Security Feature Pack (MSFP), battery life on Treos dives south of 36 hours between charges if you set it to "Always Up To Date". You can do better if you schedule your synchs every 4 hours, but that sort of misses the point of push email.
2) management through Exchange 2003 for mobile devices is laughable at best, and not scalable at all for the enterprise
3) there is no wireless provisioning
4) you cannot control access to features like bluetooth or WiFi
5) there is only one security policy available for all users, although you can explicitly exclude individuals or groups from it
6) the user's domain credentials are cached on the handheld device
On the upside, if you have Exchange 2003 deployed already, enabling this is free and easy...
I can see this is another entry with outstanding grammar, including "we are starting to here reports" where "here" should be hear since what you're doing is listening to reports not "at this place of" reports. And then basic spellcheck comes in to play here: "taking it slow as to not esplode the system again" since there is no word esplode. C writing from an A source, step up the game guys and go back to High School English 101.

Dude.. They're Canadian!
I agree. The bad grammar and spelling simply makes the post difficult to read. I hate re-reading things wondering - did the writer realy mean to say 'here'?
No wonder blackberry's are choking.
thank you Josh.
Seriously, if we BB admins thought that we could get the same security and usability out of a cheaper solution, don't you think we would use it? Win mobile is a poor excuse for a mobile solution and a security hole wider than the grand canyon. I'll take my chances with RIM (I like to walk on the wild side)
