Samsung builds a better, smaller 4GB DIMM
OCZ may have recently laid claim to the title of some of the world's fastest RAM, but Samsung seems to have found room to do a little boasting of its own, trotting out its first 4GB DDR2 DIMM based on WSP (or wafer-level-processed stacked package) technology. According to the company, that process not only makes the module smaller, but faster and more energy efficient as well. Not so clear, unfortunately, is what effect the seemingly cure-all technology will have on pricing or availability, with no word on either from Samsung as of yet.[Via PCLaunches.com]

i was told on tech-forums.net/pc, that a stick of 2GB DDR2 wont work to it's full potential, aka used both GBs, just one.
this 4GB DDR2 SDRAM is best suited for 64-bit OS, like Vista. Only 1GB will be used off this stick, not all 4GBs for 32-bit OS.
question, what is the point of having 64-bit Vista *any edition* when the 32-bit Vista supports more drivers n software? I know that 64-bit supports unlimited amount of RAM, but still, upgrading to 64-bit sounds useless.

Actually, 32bit os' support 2.7gb of ram, so more than 1gb per dimm would be used, and the rest would be ignored. What I want to know is first, when will they make it viable that larger dimms can be CHEAPER, as you increase capacity, rather than more expensive. That would be nice anyway. Microsoft should try to make 64bit vista the standard that everyone upgrades to when they upgrade to vista, so that we will get the drivers and applications, and ultimately the speed and memory support which it offers.

For drivers to pass Vista WHQL I believe they have to release both 32 and 64 bit drivers. At least that's what I read on a tech forum somewhere...

A 32 bit OS can theoretically use upto 4 gigs of RAM, but Windows XP will only see around 3.2 gigs of it. If you make some fancy changes to the registry and a few other things, then you can see upto around 3.5 to 3.7 gigs. This 4 gig stick is most likely meant for work station and server applications.

I usually see about 3.6GB on 32-bit 2003 Server. I don't have to do any registry changes tho', are you talking about the /pae boot.ini switch (which enables up to 8GB)?

No this is on xp home and pro edition. The limit that the OS sees then is 3.2 and with the changes it goes to 3.6 or so.

32-bit OS cannot physically address more than the 3GB of RAM. 64-bit can, which is why you see larger servers and high-end workstations running 64-bit OSes. 64-bit OSes need different drivers, but 32-bit applications should run fine.
The average person does NOT need a 64-bit OS and will more than likely notice a slight performance drop.

how do i know if ur telling the truth that 32-bit OS can support only up to 3GB? What about Vista? It requires the use of 1GB RAM for Home Preimum-to-Ultimate, so 1GB stick is only used for the OS, while 3GB can be used for other things *coughgamescough*, from the way how i understand it.
Honestly, im still on just getting 2 sets of 1x2GB DDR2 800 SDRAM when i get the money to get RD790, Agena FX, etc.

Ooook, you people are all listing half-truths. A 32 bit OS can address UP TO 4 gigabytes of memory (RAM). However there are other things that take up this addressing space, such as various add in cards, onboard devices, and most of all, video cards.
This is why so many people have varying numbers as to how much of their 4 gigs they actually see. Different configurations yield different amounts of RAM. As an example, in an extreme case, if someone were running a crossfire or SLi setup with two 1gb video cards, they would see less than 2 gigs of ram available for use on their system. The video cards would be chewing up 2 gigs of that 4 gig address space, and there'd be other devices on their mobos (sound cards, lan, etc) chewing up a bit more.

Brennan, 32bit OS has maximum support for 4GB of memory, but out of the 4GB maximum you need to take out reserved memory space for PCI devices and other items that require reserved memory space. As an example, if you had 4GB installed on a PCI-E based motherboard and you installed a 512MB video card, 512MB of your RAM would be ignored so the video RAM could be utilised by the system, then you have the reserved memory allocations from the rest of the hardware in the system, which is automatically removed from the total amount of RAM over the maximum amount of RAM supported minus the resource reserved allocation. As a prime example, on my old Asus P4P800 board which had 4 x 1GB sticks installed and a 128MB ATI Radeon 9700PRO AGP card with 128MB AGP Aperture, Windows would report 3.5GB of RAM available to use by the system itself with no changes needed to the boot.ini file. On a Nforce4 based board with a 512MB Nvidia low end PCI-E card installed, the amount displayed by Windows as usable was a maximum of 2.7GB with no changes and upto 3.2GB with the changes. If you have say 3GB or less of RAM installed in a system, you will see the full amount in Windows as their is still at least 1GB free from the 4GB total for other hardware resources to use.
Any application within Windows can only address 2GB anyway on a 32bit operating system, but this can be extended to 3GB by using the /pae & /3GB switches in the boot.ini file, but this is not a reliable way at all and cause system slowdowns or instability if used as it was designed for use with Server 2003 rather than XP.
Vista 32bit is still the same, but ot all changes when you go 64bit due to the much higher memory limit (64TB from memory although it is late here and I could be wrong here with that & cannot be bothered to look it up presently).
It is quite complicated to explain easily, but the forum that you are quoting from are explaining it incorrectly to you, and believe me I have been through all of this myself with the hardware & chipset manufacturers to get to the bottom of it all.

64bit OS use hence why most of the Intel boards can support up to 8GB of RAM, but a 32bit OS couldn't handle that now could it??? These people are not that smart then really are they. I would if I was you do a search for 32bit operating system memory usage if you do not believe me. Also you have the option then of installing 4 x 512MB modules or 2 x 1GB & 2 x 512MB modules and still get dual channel perfomance as long as you have the same capacity & type modules in the correct slots for each channel.
Taken from Asus Motherboard FAQ;
"There are two parts to this question:
1. Limitation of operating system.
2. Limitation of X86 compatible computer architecture.
OS wise, it is known that due to limitation of 32bit OS (e.g. Windows XP/2000/2003/Vista 32bit), it will not be able to address the full capacity of 4GB as it supports up to 4GB of RAM at max, but some of the addressing bits are used up for addressing PCI/PCI-e devices.
Please kindly switch to use 64bit operating system such as Windows XP 64bit, Server 2003 64bit or Vista 64bit to enable support of the full capacity of your RAM.
Hardware wise, please simply enter BIOS setup screen, and set "Advanced-->Chipset-->Northbridge Configuration-->Memory Remap Feature" to "Enabled".
If both requirements are fulfilled, your system should then be able to detect the full capacity of your RAM when 4GB or more RAM are installed onto this system"
On a 64bit OS you need to set the BIOS memory remap setting to enabled to utilise memory space over 4GB to get full benefit as well.
Hope this has answered your question satisfactorily, and if you choose to ignore it, you will only find out the hard way when you can only address 75% of the memory you have paid for.

Well Brennan, my buddy, who is in KAWLEDJE (that means he knows more than some forum!) told me that:
a 32 bit OS only has a: 32 bit bus.
As we all know, 32 bits is 2^32
2^32 = 4,294,967,296
that means it can address 4.3(ish) gigaBITS of anything.
thats what my college buddy told me.
based on that, 64 bit is about 32 TIMES that, remember 2^64 (18,446,744,073,709,551,616)
please, go brag about this in that forum of yours. haha, but good news is this ram will likely cause lower spec to drop in price so I can max my mobo outt. saweet!

A bus is a series of wires. Your definition is incorrect. Also, I think that virtual memory needs to be allocated too, and possibly takes up some of those 32-bits.

uhm.. I have an HP pc that's fairly new with an Athlon fx 4800+ with 4GBs of ram, and all of it is addressed. It's currently running 32bit Vista. I don't think there's a limit on how much can be used, there's just a limit of how much can be used per dimm as it has 4x1GB PC5300 sticks. I think that if I were using 4x2GB sticks it would still only say 4GBs and not 8 unless I was using 64bit vista.

4GB DIMMs are not marketed for home vista users. They are for virtualization where you need to fit 32 or 64GB of RAM on a single board.

I have a theory on how you could add an unlimited amount of RAM to your computer and the system would never balk at it. The main problem, as I've seen it, is the density of RAM. Computers are designed to handle a certain density of RAM per module. You go beyond the computer's threshold and it either only sees half of the RAM or won't see any of it.
The idea I have, is a way of fooling the computer into seeing what it wants to see, figuring it won't care about the other part.
To test this theory, we might as well start out with cheap stuff... a single PC133 or DDR266 memory module, 512Mb-1Gb in size. A motherboard that handles it. And then the fun begins... designing the hardware that will fool the computer...
If anyone is interested in this idea, let me know. We can begin immediately.
