FogSHIELD blasts burglars, amps up nightclubs
Alright, so ShatterGARD Inc. definitely doesn't intend for its FogSHIELD PB 240 (pictured after the break) to actually be used in nightclubs, but ejecting "enough fog to cover 2,000 square feet in less than 15 seconds" could definitely get the mood set real quick like. Marketed at homes and businesses who feel that they should add yet another layer of security to their pre-existing systems, the device is wired up to trip sensors that are already installed, and when triggered, can emit a non-toxic fog that purportedly "gives the intruder no option but to scurry for the door." Humorously, the company even points out that the smoke carries a "pleasant mint smell and dissipates completely within 45 minutes," which should ensure that any future crooks not only get a breath of fresh air when invading your premises, but that they return in just under an hour to give it another go. No details on pricing were readily available, but it was noted that the initial installation comes with enough fog to erupt on 15 occasions, but if you seriously end up needing to stop over a dozen invaders from breaching your property, we'd suggest a change in scenery.

James. Do us all a favor and STFU. Some of us don't watch every show in existence.

Another company presenting a "new" product when it is nowhere near new. I had one of these in my stores back in 1998. Every now and then I'd arrive at the store and the place would smell weird, it wasn't till later that I discovered that the POS had been going off randomly at night. Refilling meant buying a bottle of fog liquid and a new CO2 canister (it operates exactly like a disco smoke machine, but blows the fluid through the heating element at high pressure).
FWIW; a quick google search shows quite a few other companies selling these things, so "fogshield" is nothing new or special at all.

What would this do to cars? I'd hate to have a mint flavored Porsche.

"“When you consider that average law enforcement response time is around 20 minutes, it becomes glaringly easy to understand how a burglar can steal thousands of dollars in valuables in that time frame,”" Umm.... does he mean to an alarm or in general..

fuck a mild smell. The thing should smell like potent cat urine. Sure your house is going to reek for months but small price to pay for keeping your stuff. As for cars. Even better. Just make sure it doesn't get on the inside of the car and you are golden. :-)

"and when triggered, can emit a non-toxic fog"
I'll wait for the toxic fog model.

So really, wouldn't a good pair of IR goggles (night vision) see right through this?
Cheng Bang @ Apr 24th 2007 4:12PM
@snowglyder
I would opt of a gas mask, but no, night vision goggles wont help you there.
is it only me that sees other uses for this device, or is it my brain thats wired wrong?
imagine a bank robbery, the robbers makes a speedy exit with a fast car, and with cops chasing them they approach a intersection. now the robbers had already placed, lets say five of those units, at that intersection and as they approach they activate them remotely making a great smoke screen that prevents the cops from seeing what direction they go, or even swap cars at that intersection..

John: +1 for the Ref reference.
I want to see a miniaturized version that goes under your car hood. Just have to make sure it's not as sensitive as the one that keeps going off in our parking lot....

There are more (and horrid) concepts on stickdeath.com, but obviously they would make a mess in your car.

Does anyone know know if this would work on my Enzo?
Alex Moyler @ Apr 25th 2007 6:05AM
Had something similar set up where I used to work- brand new store. Would work well in enclosed spaces, but if it's got space to expand you can still get through it. Meh.
Amusingly we managed to set it off on the first day of opening...
Nick @ Apr 25th 2007 3:23PM
Umm... is it just me or is this ideal for hiding the perp in a cloud of smoke? I really don't see how this is going to give an "intruder no option but to scurry for the door" if anything it conceals them from video surveillance or any would be witnesses.
abigsmurf @ Apr 25th 2007 4:55PM
these things have been around for years, my local blockbusters even uses a system like this
jk @ Apr 27th 2007 7:23AM
YOu saw FogSHIELD on It takes a Thief thats correct
j @ Apr 30th 2007 12:34AM
I saw this fogshield unit overseas, it works incredibly well. FYI: Th nothing like a disco fogger, the FogSHIELD ejects the fog at lighting speeds. I had to be escorted out of the room due to the fact I couldnot see one foot in front of me.
My 2 cents
jk @ Apr 30th 2007 8:47AM
You unit works really well- sak it in the UK
