Wiimote hacked to make opening doors look silly
Most Wiimote hacks we get involve using the little white wonder as a cheap substitute controller for things that are somewhat difficult to operate, like immersive 3D simulators and robot arms. On the other hand, blowing hours of your life hacking a Wiimote just to unlock a door deserves a special mention for sheer absurdity of purpose. Dissatisfied with their existing smartcard setup, a group of Japanese fanboys rigged up their, um, FreeBSD door controller (doorputer?) to accept Bluetooth input from Wiimotes. A simple flick of the wrist triggers the lock motor, allowing you to pass into the next room ready to explain why you're wandering around with a Wiimote strapped to your wrist for no apparent reason. We see only two problems with this setup: first, since the system only authenticates users via Bluetooth addresses, it's far less secure than, you know, keys; and second, everyone knows Linux runs a doorputer like, so much better than BSD. Video of the Wiimote in action after the jump, plans at the read link.

nerdboys everywhere will rejoice when they invent one that opens real girls' pants

To be fair, the Wii has never had a problem opening girls pants. Wii boxing is practically like spanish fly.

I finally just realized how cool the next gen systems are gonna be (3-5 years down the road). Of course Sony will have learned from their mistakes this time around and will have released some motion sensors even cooler than those on the Wii. It’ll still be the most expensive system I’m sure, but not as bad as this time. Seeing vids like this just makes me think of all the possibilities… how about motion gloves - anyone wanna try that? Leave it to PS4 to bring it - if they have the guts for the innovation. It would certainly accomplish the cool factor which they always strive for :)

Sony will never truly Innovate anything, look at their controller.....mmmm....looks the same to me! Just whack in a few crappy 6 axis doodleflips and call it an upgrade

@ Scott. I agree, my chick loves playing on the Wii, dammit shes a hell of alot better at tennis than me too!
Although never shall i forgive her for finishing MY save of Zelda :'(

They forgot the fourth way to unlock a door...to have someone unlock it from the inside and let you in.
And nerdboys everywhere will also rejoice when they invent one that can vibrates nonstop.

What is it with all of these lame wiimote hacks?
What I am waiting for is the ultimate lame ass wiimote hack. Hack a bidet with a wiimote so you can wipe your ass without wiping your ass.

Seriously, can we stop calling anything that hooks the Wiimote up to a PC and uses it as a standard 2-axis joystick or standard 2/3/4-button mouse a "hack"? This is a hack:

The original post is *not* a hack. Get back to me when somebody is doing subtractive sculpting in a CAD program using a Wiimote as a scalpel, or flying a real flight-school simulator using a Wiimote + Nunchuck instead of a yoke. Hell, get back to me when somebody uses a Wiimote as a badly-overpriced wireless doorbell (it's got buttons and a speaker, right?). If the posting were a howto -- instructions on getting gestures working in Linux, for instance -- that would be different. But this kind of thing just shows a lack of imagination, IMHO.

I think it should be called a Commo-door, not a doorputer
