Well lookey lookey, the cellphone fairy dropped us off an unbranded
Motorola Q9 to fool around with. Cut to the chase: we're not going to lie: the fact that it's larger than the Q is somewhat unacceptable in our eyes -- we really don't care that it has HSDPA, 3G is no longer an excuse for a big ass phone. Also unfortunate: no more scroll wheel, you're now stuck with the usual up/down rocker buttons. The keyboard, which looks especially tactile, isn't really all that fantastic, and kind of reminded us of a grid of slick, round hard-candies. Basically, we're not super stoked for the Q9, but hey, it ain't over until it's out, and this thing hasn't shown any signs of
US release in the near future, so maybe they'll have time to work out some kinks.
What a lame device. I mean seriously, what kind of productivity are you able to derive out of WMP6 (even with Opera Mobile 8.65) vs. that of the iPhone, online. Can someone please manufacture a handset that has 3G, displays web pages properly, does YouTube, and has Wifi?
Heh, I laughed at the speech bubble commentary: http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/04/motorola-q9-hands-on-16.jpg
I sure hope it's just the camera angles that make that thing look so totally huge...
That thing is hardly "huge". Yes, its bigger than the blackjack, but it's no Treo. Honestly, I don't think that's entirely a bad thing. I have the BlackJack and the keys are just a little to small for my comfort, and I have girly fingers. The Samsung has other little issues, while none are major, are something I could do without.
I currently have a Q and i hate it, and with the iphone coming out who the hell would want the Q9.
"in the wild"
I hate that term.
Please let the internet know about the rest of the things you hate so we can begin the censorship campaign. Wouldn't want to make you mad.
I'm not the only one, it sounds like the second coming.
We're talking about a phone here, not a rare Mongoose.
I'm really disappointed. I'm an Exchange user and therefore pro-WM devices...was waiting on the Q9, but I think not having a scrollwheel will turn me away. As for the iPhone comments on this post: until you can convince corporate users that the iPhone will (a) sync everything from tasklist to calendar with an exchange server seamlessly, and (b) be easy to type on, it's a hard sell that they're even competing devices. Time will tell, though! I'd love an iPhone but I'll be surprised if it's right for me.
Wow what a review. Especially when your own pics show the phone the phone isn't longer than a BlackJack only wider for a nicer looking screen.
This thing looks no bigger than my Nokia E61 which is thin, light and fits in my hand very well with a fabulous screen. (The phone has other frustrating issues for me which is why I was curious to see what the Q9 offered so I could migrate back to Windows Mobile which is how I ended up reading the comments).
Itty bitty people with itty bitty hands can keep your itty bitty phones, I see nothing wrong with having something I can hold on to.
At least I now know the 8300 is probably the better choice?
If you recall all your comments regarding the Blackjack, http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/12/31/hands-on-with-the-samsung-blackjack/, we need to give this device a chance. The blackjack is Cingular's top selling PDA and for the BB tree huggers, yes it is sellng more than BBs.
Uh... why does it matter that it's selling more than Blackberries?
If anything, that's a good thing for those of us in search of functioning; non-lockup prone stable devices, since that whole supply/demand thing bites you in the ass and drops our prices; raises yours.
Ouch, hm?
I suppose in retrospect this doesn't look ALL that big, but it certainly gives off that bulky aura in my book. I'm using the 8700, and it's no RAZR, but it's not in need of Jenny Craig yet either..
Chris
Motorola does NOT know how to build phones. They might have some neat concepts, but their execution is horrible. There's always some design or performance flaw in every single phone they make.
Their phones might look half-way decent, but they make the cheapest junk out there; I don't care how popular a few of their phones may have been in the past. They're all garbage.
Give me a Sony Ericsson instead, anyday.
i'm trying to sync two pda's (moto q and axim x50v) and two computers (desktop and laptop) and i keep getting duplicate calendar items and contacts. i'm making changes from only one source and am powerless to prevent this phenomenon. while i don't think i could actually write a better program, i can conceptualize how it would work, and it makes me sick how a multi-billion dollar company like microsoft can't get it right. activesync sucks; i hope microsoft fixes it. if you've used it before, you probably know what i'm talking about.
ugly
OMG, would you people get your facts right, the phone isn't even out yet.
1) Compare a iphone to a WM6 device is a complete joke, iphone should be called ixpensive, and it's inserted in another market place, iphone is for kids and apple fans, not office people who need to sync the mobile with calendar mail and other stuff.
And if you complaint about the size of Q9, did you even bother to look right at the iphone presentation videos?!?! That thing is a brick, and for what? An UI user friendly?! Screw that, after one day of use i'm tired of the UI and all I want is applications for my needs, I doubt that apple will ever open the platform in order to let us have apps developed bu third partys, i think that people love nokia and wm because of that, millions of apps on the web, and you can virtually build your own app if you develop aplications like I do.
2)Motorola Q9 has hsdpa and therefore it's larger than Q, do most of you guys even know what hsdpa is? You will be able to surf the web up to 3.6mbps, put the browser of the nokia or iphone next to this Q9 opera browser and analyze the results.
3)I wonder why everybody suddenly hate motorola, but a few months ago everybody wanted a razor V3, now it's all about iphone, next month other stuff, it's a trendy world were living these days, and people buy stuff for the status it gives next to their friends instead of what the device can do for us. I bet that when iphone V2 version gets out everybody will rush in to say bad things about it, has it will no longer be a new product with "want it" factor (like everybody did with ipod nano's "omg it scratches easaly" "bla bla bla"...
But oh well, why bother, it's your money, do what you think best with it.
