T-Mobile Dash gets Windows Mobile 6 upgrade
Exactly as planned, all you Dash users can head on over to T-Mobile's Windows Mobile upgrade site tomorrow (Friday, the 4th, to be extra verbose), and snag the free Windows Mobile 6 upgrade. Be warned, though, you'd better make sure to get a decent backup app because the upgrade will, as usual, hard reset all the data on your device.

Ryan no! Don't tell the readers to back up their data! If they use a back-up program made for Windows Mobile and try to restore the backup from Windows Mobile 5 to Windows Mobile 6, it will either fail or break the device.

Just want an honest opinion. I am currently a Sidekick 3 users and was wondering if it is worth it to purchase the Dash. I am getting tired of the flip to dial out. I purhased the Sidekick to have a complete address book, with name, address, etc. I know the price will change if I switch, but is the Dash better than the Sidekick? I am a more mature Sidekick user (not the hip hop age). :)

Then at least make sure that you've "synced" your data with a computer or a server, otherwise you can kiss your stuff byebyye!

Anyone know of an app that will backup everything, like OS and all, in case I wanna revert it back for some reason??

This is old news. The link's been active for a week now.
@ryanworrell: There is no such beast. You should get a decent PIM backup by sync-ing with Outlook (including notes)- if that's not good enough for you then google is your friend. Settings for everything else should be written down.
Your 3rd party apps *may* not work under WM6...yet. Networking/VPN programs esp. including BBC.
If you need to downgrade because WM6 doesn't float your boat then head over to xda-developers.com and search the forums and wiki (warning: do not post without searching first or you'll get flamed).

Cool deal. almost everything is either on my transflash or on my exchange so I think I should be OK.

Any chance that the T-mobile MDA is WM6 compatible?

Anyone know if the T-Mobile SDA is getting a WM6 upgrade too? I know... highly unlikely.
david @ May 3rd 2007 12:46PM
The web link is only the old MDA upgrade? Am I missing something?

I think a move to the Dash would do you alot of good! Windows Mobile is very expandable and you can do pretty much anything on it! I would definatly move from the Sidekick to a smartphone. Remember, the Sidekick is a smartphone for teens. If your over 21 and use a Sidekick, then you need a kick in the side :P

@dustin: Very good point. A backup is normally only good on the exact same ROM release, especially if you're talking a major point change. It's always a good idea to have a spare copy of the last-known-good firmware for your WM device to do a full rollback, if you need to.
@ryan: I use spb Backup personally, but it only supports PocketPC/Classic & Professional devices. IBE Backup supports WM Smartphone/Standard devices, but doesn't offer full device recovery. Unfortunately, these utilities still require the ROM to match the backup when recovering data.
For anyone who's interested, I've got our standard procedure for updating WM devices documented over at the FB (www.chrisrue.com/funboard). Note: Free registration required.

DON'T do the upgrade!! It will NOT work with all SMTP outgoing servers and there is no way to go back!! Software not fully tested!!
