Just because
HP has
buried the Digital Entertainment Center doesn't mean that it's forgetting about the media-centric crowd, as the company's forthcoming m8010y and d4890y will offer up some fairly swank high-definition niceties. Aside from offering customers the option for an Intel Q6600
Core 2 Quad processor and NVIDIA's
GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card, this duo will also include a mysterious dual-format combo drive to handle both BD and HD DVD responsibilities. While we can only assume that the
GGW-H10N will be the drive of choice, both PCs will boast HD DVD / Blu-ray playback with burning abilities including on the latter, and as if that wasn't enough HD goodness crammed into a PC, moneyed consumers can also opt to have ATI's
TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner pre-installed as well. There's no word just yet surrounding pricing, exact configurations, or a launch timeframe, but word on the street suggests that the combo drive should be made available to the adoring public within "four to six weeks."

The whole Wintel PC industry need to learn something from Apple how to name and promote its product lines. It's not that Apple has outstanding brand names.
But hell, any *human* *readable* name would be magnitudes better than hideous "d4890y".
This is one if the reasons I was buying Apple hardware recently. Wintel/PC sales were all getting confused with the stupid PC model numbering schemes. Add here availability problems and all the tiny price fluctuations - buying PC at times can be next to impossible: "Oh no, model 504030-666-25 we have spoken about yesterday isn't available anymore. Though we have 504030-666-26 in stock: it costs more and its specs are not available yet. Are you going to buy it?" That's pretty much my experience trying to buy Toshiba laptop two winters ago.
I'm with you on that point.....
yep, agreed - i tried to compare prices for different HPs recently and it's just a huge mess trying to match impossible name-numbers with specs/prices, especially between different stores.
the confusion-tactics of HP's sales team seems to be working though, given that HP has greatly increased sales over the last year.
