Samsung YP-U3 miniDAP outed
We've come so-very-not-far from Samsung's original entrant into this particular segment of the DAP market back in 2005, the YP-U1. Samsung did away with its fold-out USB port for a boring old cap with the YP-U2, but the YP-U3 returns to the "innovative" days of yore with a retractable USB port of sorts. Of course, storage is on the rise, with Samsung fitting a whole 4GB into one of these tiny units, and the look is certainly more modern than that frumpy U2, but a 1-inch OLED display, RDS-capable FM tuner and 15 hours of battery life just doesn't sound too exciting these days, no matter what the form factor. No word on price or release date just yet, but we'll keep you posted.[Via dapreview]

I got a refurbed YP-U2 for $35 shipped.
I was very impressed with this unit. Also, flashed the unit with some Korean firmware that allowed the unit to be used as a USB drive. SWEET. This thing is packed with features. Gives the shuffle a run for it's money.
Do you have a name or link for the firmware? I found it annoying not being able to use the player as a regular USB memory stick with the original firmware...
I was impressed and not-so with the U2. It has a lot going for it: decent ergonomics, the ability as #1 says, to flash it with firmware that will make it Mass Storage Compliant (USB external HDD), decent battery life, charging without a dreaded USB adapter cord. Those are all reason why I bought it.
But, honestly, the sound quality is below par. Nowhere near as good as the various muvos etc from creative that I have owned and lost! Doesn't even come close to my ETEN M600 WM% PPC phone. So people who review it and give it a thumbs up for sound quality mystify me. I'm using it for audiobooks only now. Oh, that and as a flash data drive...
so YP-U3 or Sansa Express?
either way, certainly not the Shuffle (or its brother the Stone)
Nope.
Just no.
It doesn't have an Apple nor does it say iPod anywhere on it.
Phail.
Nope.
Just no.
It doesn't have an Apple nor does it say iPod anywhere on it.

Well, that and.. it's a handheld DAP that you need two hands to use. First cock-up. Next is the corny digital screen.. almost useless. Oh yeah.. glowy end for the thing that's going to be in my pocket 99% of the time? Thanks.
Looks like a Sansa Express-killer to me. Except no MicroSD support.
Looks like a wiimote.
I just bought the samsung yp u3. simply I cannot get it to work there is so much software being loaded onto my pc I am in deep dispare. i have three other mp3 players and none ever needed so much disruption to my pc and I know that i simply will not be able to use this thing at work on the apple. I am taking it back to the shop tommorow. this isnt the future at all this is a backward step in electronics and I am dissapointed that the damn thing got such positive internet reviews.
The Samsung YP-U3 is one sleek little device though... SOunds good and supports OGG... Just like my little MPIO FG-200...
Does anyone know about firmware upgrade for this device? In regards to getting it to work; I had a problem getting it to work... Installing Windows Media Player 11 solved it immediately though... Seems the neccesary drivers are part of the install or something.
