Nokia N81 and N82 come to light
Symbian-Guru has the scoop on not one, but two unannounced new high-end Nokia handsets, the N81 (pictured on the left) and the N82 (pictured on the right).
The slider-style N81 looks it'll be the successor to their N91 musicphone (except less, uh, busted-looking) and sport a full 8GB of memory, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, quad-band EDGE and 2100MHz HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The N82 has a more traditional candybar form-factor and'll have a five megapixel camera with Xenon flash and auto-focus Carl Zeiss lens, quad-band GSM (doesn't say whether it'll be GRPS or EDGE, but we're guessing EDGE), 2100MHz HSDPA, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, integrated GPS, FM tuner, and a microSD memory card slot.
Doesn't sound like either will be out until Q4 of this year.

I've played with an N91 a few times and all I can say about these is Wow! What an improvement over the (comparative) brick that was the n91...
ryan @ May 10th 2007 11:53PM
b-e-a-utiful phones if I do say so myself
Gudbergur @ May 11th 2007 12:03AM
I've had N80 for a year and it's absolute piss. It's slow and unstable, and makes it to nr 2 of worst gadget purchases i've made. Nr 1 was Archos AV200 or something back in 2001 when i could have had first generation iPod, what a mistake that was. Anyhoo, can't wait for iPhone!

Sorry, but this looks like Nokia is moving towards similar designs as Sony Ericsson.
You have to ask this question though, why do Nokia release new phones so frequently? Probably cause they can never get it right.
JohnnyCashAK @ May 11th 2007 1:03AM
I like all of the features on the N82, but the keypad looks like absolute Shite, and the entire phone looks like one huge ripoff of the SE candybar line, right down to the placement of the volume and shutter buttons, and the two soft keys places to the right and left of the d-pad.
If the left softkey was orange, it would be a dead ringer for my W810i.
On the upside, Quad band GSM ftw. Wish the other carriers would figure out that going quad band is a GOOD thing.
Chrisphillers @ May 11th 2007 5:18AM
Firstly they are all copying each other - where do you think SE got their style from originally anyway? The soft keys - its a pretty standard layout in the industry, the shutter position - rather obviously its placed where every other shutter button has been on other Nokias - ie in the position of a horizontal camera.
JohnnyCashAK @ May 11th 2007 7:26AM
Dude, the phones look almost IDENTICAL. Take a pic of the W810i, and put it side by side with the N82, and tell me it's not a deliberate knockoff. Softkeys aren't anything new, but the placement and design generally vary between brands, except in this case. You say it's not intentional, and I say prove it: show me a nokia phone that was released prior to the SE W810i that has the volume controls, shutter button, and shoulder softkeys mounted in the same positions with the same design.
Why are you hopelessly trying to defend Nokia on this anyway... are you a fanboy or an employee? And just to be frank, I've owned SE phones since long before Sony was around to put the S before the E, and I've owned Nokia's almost as long. What was it... the 5150... the old candybar phone that had one big softkey in the middle that did everything? Got that in 99, back when Motorola was still selling StarTac phones like hotcakes. I have no vested interest in either brand, I just can't stand unoriginal sh*t, no matter who makes it.

I have a problem with my Nokia N82. The key pad lights do not come so its very difficult recognising the numbers on the key pad for use especially during the night
dacrazytkr @ May 11th 2007 3:41AM
to Gudbergur:
Update your phone and it'll all be gone... I had a N80 (N95 now) and all the problems went away once it was updated ;-)
To Bob:
Try to take both of the phones you're interested in in your hands and play a bit with it, I sell phones, and I must say that the quality of both brands is +/- equal. The gui is different though, so go for the one with the best "feel" for you ;-) I personally am more a Nokia N-series fan, but that's just beacause I prefer a good big phone I can at least hold in my hands while calling in the opposite of the other small ones that you have to hold with 2 fingers while calling... And that ain't fun when you're calling 30+ minutes...
Greetz!
Chrisphillers @ May 11th 2007 5:17AM
Have you seen the N95 screen? It is QVGA and looks great. I heard a large reason the N80 has such bad battery life is because of the screen.
Chrisphillers @ May 11th 2007 8:30AM
I am a little confused as to how you could own an SE phone before SE existed;) but I'll take that as a mistake.
I too have owned pre SE phones, ie Sony (Z5) and Ericsson phones (T28 etc). a) Ericsson phones were appalling, looked terrible, ran slowly etc b) Sony phones looked good actually, I loved my Z5. but you then must remember that to get their act together SE copied Nokias designs - ie the T610 was a blatant copy of the Nokia designed phones - and this now underpins the whole SE style. They all copy each other thats all I was trying to say. I am no 'supporter' of one or the other.
You can go as far back as the 8210 to see a Nokia with the volume on the side! The N73 has exactly the same side button layout as this phone. What you are proposing is ridiculous. They all copy each other and build on their own designs.
Admiral @ May 11th 2007 7:57AM
Wondering when we will start seeing quadband UMTS.
I am wondering if Nokia and the gang are just waiting for stabilization in the frequencies before putting stuff in their phones....
L.Rawlins @ May 11th 2007 9:06AM
Looking at that N82, the K850i had better be packing heat.
Although I'm dubious as to whether either of these are legit, and that 5mpx camera lens had better have a protective cover of some sort.
greatslack @ May 11th 2007 10:57AM
Shiny!
CuriousChickKimmi @ May 11th 2007 2:17PM
I think both phones are really cool! Personally, I think these 2 phones look way better than any other Nokia phones and the functions sound GREAT, too! But I am more than willing to bet these will cost more than a fortune to buy when they come out!
Oh and Yes, I own a W810i and plans on buying the W580i so it goes to show I'm a SE fan but that doesn't mean I can't like these phones. Besides, originality is DEAD.... well, endangered. Phones are phones.
Ray @ May 13th 2007 10:04AM
I hate nokia for this !! I spent a small fortune on buying the nokia N95 a few weeks back...and they already release the successor the "N82" ...which has everything the nokia N95 does + 1GB internal memory and a Xenon flash. Not to mention ...its a candybar form factor ..which i totally love. Darn nokia.!! ..When will you ever stop teasing your customers ??
-ShAwTy- @ Jun 1st 2007 11:33PM
BOTH PHONES ARE COOL...love'em can w8 for them but i think i'm liking sony for now..but still nokia is making phones so descent!
Tarek M. @ Jun 21st 2007 4:28AM
Ok N80 now N82...why nokia didn't release N82 directly or it's somerging commercial...never think now about design think about software and if it's adequate with it's hardware
what about adding new user softwares.....or basic sofwares designed by nokia for internet like IM+
some options like voice recording withouy beep..why i'm always searching for softwares from untrusted sites and it's crack!!
Xenon flash will affect battery life
Please nokia test ur software with it's hardware b4 realeasing it or u Gonna
LOSE CUSTOMERS......lokk for competitives thx
Matt @ Aug 6th 2007 9:45AM
Tarek,
The beep during the conversation recording is required by law in some countries (such as in USA) to let the other party know that they're being recorded. Xenon flash will affect the batterybut at the same time will make good pictures in the dark. This past weekend I've had a chance to play around with my friend's SE K800i which has a xenon flash - it rocked and I wish this would become the standard feature in all phones.

The keypad of n82 is not very comfortable. And it looks disturbingly SE-like. The special music player key, located right underneath the right soft key and over the red key is too easy to press. bad location.
I hope they change a bit the design of the 5way navigational pad, cause it's not very comfortable either.
n81 is very comfortable to be held, but the glossy surface is a fingerprint catcher.
I'd go for the n81 once it gets on the market.

Hi, Sienna81 here from n81street.com, I just made the Nokia N81 User's Manual available (http://n81street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24) and would like to start a discussion about it for those that are interested. In fact the n81street site being brandnew could use the support of anyone really excited about Nokia's new entertainment phone!
Cheers,
